I am heading to Berlin on a side trip. I will be there 4-5 days. I have done a bit of research but not sure what area I want to stay? I am looking for a hotel to sleep.
Can someone recommend the safest area to stay but yet close to sights/entertainment etc.
Thanks
I want to try and use priceline to book a room: My options for areas are East, Kreuzberg, Tiergarten-Kufuerstendamm and Schloss Charlottenburg.

Anything around Alexanderplatz is good. Really anything close to an S-Bahn or U Bahn line will get you around, its very efficient ja...
btw there are free walking tours in Berlin, the company with the red shirts gave me an excellent tour. Had no problem tipping 5 euros, day well spent.
edit:
realized your limited on selections, I can't really comment on the neighborhoods just proximity to the center of Berlin.
Kreuzberg seems is right on the U-bahn and close to S-Bahn / near alexanderplatz
Schloss Charlottenburg - Seems a bit far from downtown, though it is on the S-Bahn
Tiergarten-Kufuerstendamm - Also a bit far from the center, but closer then Schloss
Not sure about east.
Proximity to the city is only really important if your out late drinking since not all lines run 24 hours. I think the s-bahns 24hours on Saturdays. If it comes down to it, ask on lonely planet or on a local german message board which neighborhood is the least disirable of the 3. The s-bahn and u bahn will move you around Berlin so fast its not funny. Also berlins built on swamp land, so no hills (except those constructed of rubble). Perfect city to bike.
I would recommend Kreuzberg, but I am no expert on neighborhoods and not sure if your male / female and how old you are. Berlins got the same problems any major city does, but I wouldn't be overly worried about being the victim of violent crime or anything.
Check out betterbidding.com not sure how good their europe info is, but if you just research this request on google a bit more then I have you should come up with the best place to bid. Google.ca/maps works great in Berlin ;)

We (married couple in their 30s)stayed in a private room at The Circus Hostel Weinbergsweg 1a, D-10119 BERLIN
"Rosenthaler Platz" station.
Beautiful, clean, friendly hostel. Great room, balcony. You have to keep pressing the button in the shower for water, but it hot and great pressure. 60 euro per night, I think.
There's a 2 euro charge if you want to use a credit card - we also bought our breakfast up front and rented a bus pass (all on credit cards).
It's about a ... 15 minute walk to Museum Island? I'm short and slow...
Definitely the free walking tour. AWESOME. Took two hours longer than promised. :D

I am interested in using priceline for my hotel booking in Berlin. Does anyone know if the following area INCLUDES the Mitte region of Berlin.
Tiergarten - Kufuerstendamm
Is Mitte in between these areas?
thanks

East is Mitte. Tiergarten is north of the park, Charlottenburg is to the West. East (Mitte) has a lot of the historical stuff, Tiergarten has the central, downtown, city hall and zoo stuff, although they border each other.
In the 2 days we were there we barely made it as far as the zoo, so I'd stay towards the east of Tiergarten.
I have a great pdf with a map and walking tour guide. PM me and I'll email it to you.
