I dont think they ask to see your return ticket when you go through customs?
But it might be wise to buy a round trip ticket because it is cheaper, just estimate your return date, if you need to change, then call your airline/travel agency. It's usually $50 for changes, which is still cheaper than buying 2x one-way ticket.

HK 99.9% chance they won't give a rats ass, but if your connection happens to be in the US, customs might be an ass about it.

As long as you're a Canadian citizen, US customs don't care about one way tickets. Canadians have no reason to stay in the US permanently, so that's not even a concern. In fact, I believe Canadians who stay in the US end up losing their OHIP coverage, so it's just not something that usually happens without being done legally.
If you're not a Canadian, then you may very well be hassled, I really don't know.

I hope this is a failed attempt at a very dry joke. US Customs absolutely cares that you intend to come back. I've been asked for proof of exactly that when I've headed down for just 5 weeks.
And as someone who has been looking for a way to move to the US legally for years, I can tell you there are plenty of reasons. Just make friends with a few actors, and you'll suddenly become aware of a ton of Canadians working illegally in the States. Sadly, with the few options available to us without a NAFTA job, doing it illegally is a remarkably attractive option even when taking into account all the drawbacks/sacrifices. Customs knows this, and they grill accordingly.

+1
And there are instances where if you take a bus down to the States, they wont let you cross the border unless you show them a valid return ticket. :|

I have taken a bus and flown to the US on a one way ticket and they never so much as blinked an eye. I also rarely get asked when I'm coming back when I drive down.

ummm well i'm not sure if i'll be going thru the US to get to HK...but if i do, it would only be a quick stop over anyway...
i was only notified abt a possible problem when the travel agent told me, which i find interesting cause if someone really doesn't know when they're returning, doesn't it make sense to buy a one way ticket?
