Hi,
I wondering how i can break into the retail market?
I am 18 and i've been working at the same place for over 3 years now. I do manual labor (working at a shipping company) as a sorter. I'm interested in getting into store retail, working at telus, rogers, or something of that nature that does commission work. I've looked into it and it seems that you need some retail experience...
What i really want to know is how do i break that barrier of "retail experience."

I was in the same situation as you. I applied to several, didn't get hired, applied to a new store opening, got an interview literally 3 hours after I applied for the job (by phone).
So I guess the lesson is to be on the look out for new store openings because they hire.
I only worked their for a couple of months and then quit because I'd gained the retail experience and then got hired at another retail which asks for experience.
Btw, the first place I worked at had 'individual sales goals' which is like commission but you don't get paid for your sales. It was a pain in the ass with managers always bugging you when you didn't meet your sales goal so I think places without commission are better. So your best bet is to apply to new stores opening up.

Oh and check out Scarborough Town Centre if you live around that area.
I was there 2 weeks ago and half the stores had "SEASONAL HELPERS WANTED" signs up for the Christmas shopping season. :)
Oh nevermind, you live in Oakville... guess you could try malls there, they should all be hiring for the Christmas rush.

+1. It's seasonal hiring time. Most stores will hire ANYONE who appears even mildly competent for the rush. If you're good, some stores will keep you on after Christmas.

Go out to a mall and hand out resumes. I just a got an assistant manager position even though I have no previous retail or manager experience.
Right now a lot of places are hiring seasonal workers for the Christmas season.
