Just curious, when you give your SIN (Social Insurance Number) to your employer. What information can they see?

You work history?
college degree?
Your salary?

Thanks for your help.

Why would they see any of this information? The SIN is primarily used to report information for tax purposes.

Employer's don't have access to any of your personal information through your SIN.

Like the previous OP mentioned, the SIN is used for tax purposes, issuing receipts, tax credits, etc.

I asked the SIN office this question, they said no information will be available to the employer, it is used to identify you.

The information pertaining to your job history has to be done via each company, calling them up. Same for degree.

also might be able to tell what jurisdiction you first got your SIN from.

That's what I've heard, but my SIN starts with a "1", yet I got it at the Guelph, ON office 6 years ago when I moved to Canada. Everyone seems to think I got it in the Atlantic provinces.

Someone messed up your application then.. The first digit denotes where it card was issued:

1 - Atlantic Provinces
2 - Quebec
4 - Ontario
6 - Prairie Provinces
7 - Pacific Region
9 - Visa / Foreigners

Neat. Mine starts with a 5 and it was issued in Ontario. Guess they didn't have that information on the chart.

The first digit of a SIN indicates the province in which it was registered:

1: Atlantic Provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador
2: Quebec
3: Quebec
4: Ontario (including overseas forces)
5: Ontario
6: Prairie Provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), Northwest Territories, and Nunavut
7: Pacific Region (British Columbia and Yukon)
8: Not used
9: Temporary resident
0: Not used (Canada Revenue may assign fictitious SIN numbers beginning with zero to taxpayers which do not have SINs)

Note: While the first digit usually identifies the location of registration, the government has found it necessary in the past to supply certain regions with SIN numbers assigned to other regions.

I guess someone edited it already. Gotta love wiki.
