Hi guys, this is an entirely made up scenario but is related to my current situation. Let's say I am currently a student in human resources and I would like to work at the human resources department at companies such as Bestbuy, Canadian Tire, Cineplex, The Keg etc after I graduate. Would my chance of getting a position at the department increase if I were a part-time employee as say a sales person at Bestbuy or a server at The Keg? Would there be more chance for networking with internal people?

not sure about the networking part, maybe if you're lucky. However, you would certainly have a basis for experience that you know the company in various aspects, since you've worked for them, and have achieved ___ in sales, etc.

If you are looking for a part time job durring school, getting a job at a place you want to work after graduation wouldn't hurt, but actual HR experience would be better. There useually is not a whole lot of transfer from part time retail employee to corperate jobs.
HR and sales/serving are different skill sets. The corperate environment is very different from the store/restaurant environment. When the company wants to hire new people for HR, experience working in on of their retail locations is a nice touch, but experience that proves you have the right skills for the job is much better. If you get a job at best buy, it only really helps you at best buy anyways, it wont help you to get a job at the keg, where a job in HR at XYZ corp will be experience you can apply towards working in HR anywhere, including Best buy, cineplex, etc etc.
It's best to focus on making yourself the best professional you can be in your chosen feild, and not tie your career to any one company.
