I dunno where you heard this but thats just stupid.
Working at a government position shouldn't matter to your future employer.
I don't recall anyone of my friends who have suffered from working at for government.

Yeah it is true. Some companies will not hire people who have worked in government. Small businesses are the worst in this respect.

But governments tend to prefer to hire people with previous government experience. So you suffer a gain, but also a loss in potential opportunities.

Thanks guys for your replies. I think it depends on the person who is reviewing my resume. all things can happen.

No it will not effect you...If anything it will help. If you said you were worked the last 20 years for the government at some menial non-educated position ...then it would. A lot of government jobs require PHD's, Masters degrees etc...are these people lazy? That guy we elect as every 4 years as our prime minister..he's a government worker as well.

It could.

I wouldn't hire someone from public sector.

It's better than not having experience at all, though.

Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

There are gov jobs that require only highschool diploma and go on from there.

The reason why many employers "don't like" people who have worked for provincial/federal government is because those people are used to job stability and generally don't work as hard as people outside of government ...

There are jobs in both public and private that only require HS...

You are actually commenting on Union vs non-union.

For any higher level job your comments do not hold. In fact, since most government sectors are horribly underfunded, a manager in this environment has put up with bureaucracy and stress that someone in a private company would never accept.

Why would you want to think of your gov experience as a disadvantage?
You have any idea how many people are trying to get into the public sector ?
Just ignore those who tell you that government workers are lazy and addicted to the stability. Truth is, they wish that they could have the stability and work/life balance at times like now.

Its considered as winning the lottery getting a position at BC Hydro from what I have heard.

If you dont like the idea of 100% public/government environment, try crown corporations. Many crown corps are very unique in the sense that they are backed by government but still maintain some private sector corporate culture.

let's put it this way: don't worry about it.

at your level (internships), experience still beats no experience.

Yes it can - Gov't is looked upon in "general" as lazy and outdated. This is NOT my view but what I heard in general in private practice. I recommend you get some private experience if you plan is to go to private at all. I also find the gov't is very bias when it comes to bi-lingualism. WHen I graduated I was not hired in gov't due to not being bilingual. This will hold you back from being
promoted if you are not bilingual. Most managers have to be bilingual. I know 2-3 people you
are stuck in job for years because they cannot speak french.

As for winning lottery in gov't stuff - depends on what you want to accomplish in your life. We live in a global market and stability is a thing of the past. The sooner people realize this the better.
In private you can get hell of a lot of experience and chance to move up the ladder faster. Laguage
is not used against you at all. There is growth in the private ( and downs) but there is always change. YOu also get stock option plans, better training plan, global exposure.

Yes it can depending on type of work you are doing. Private companies tend to hire people ( esp in hi-tech) who have private experience.

& all required you to speak french. I live in ottawa and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a gov't job unless you are bi-lingual. MY wife works in gov't and will not get promoted because she cannot speak french. All managers in her area require french regardless of the work experience. Is french used in her area - rarely.

First summer, I worked for Ontario Government as a Junior business advisor and last summer, I worked for City of Toronto Financial reproting group as an accounting intern.. I am graduating, now I want to go out to explore more, therefore I don't that now those companies will view my experiences from government...

No, that's crazy talk, especially when you are talking about an internship! Just get all the experience you can, it can only benefit you when you look for your first job.

might not hurt you so much cuz you were just doing it as summer job and internship.

but it is very real that some employers would not hire people who have worked in government for a long period of time. Especially in a smaller business where you need to multi-task a lot.

and also note that I'm not talking about government jobs like City Planner.

Yes, there's a bias against ex-government employees.

Thankfully it's only an internship.

That guy we elect as every 4 years as our prime minister..he's a government worker as well.

Why do you think they're politicans/academics? hee hee.
