im looking at a 2009 subaru impreza 2.5i sport 5 door with manual transmission here in Alberta..

i know the invoice price is $23,809

msrp is $25,595

freight and PDI is $1495, inc block heater.
$120 Air and tyre tax, and obviously 5% GST..

so total if i got it at invoice would be $26,695.20

i plan on getting it on finance with subaru, at 4.9% over 5 years...

what price should i be looking to get it at? below invoice? at invoice?

any tips on how best to approach the dealer?

ive been told by one dealer i will get discount as im in the emergency services here in calgary so they offer us a special deal..

what is a realistic figure..

thanks for any help..

thanks for that,
when and where did you buy it from?

do you think there is much chance of getting it for less than invoice with the poor market right now?

what about getting some accessories thrown in? which is the best way to play it with the dealers?

I really don't know how the haggling game goes (it is my first new car), but I was satisfied with $300 over invoice in comparison to what I saw on the internet. If I got it for $300 over invoice, try for $100 over invoice, lol.

I didn't get any accessories thrown in, but I did get the rear bumper guard, roof rack, and the hood deflector (you know how the winter's are here, great protection for a metal hood). The roof rack is integrated into the roof itself and it is made by Thule, so I highly recommend it versus an aftermarket one. I also paid for the XM adapter, but this year you get the Sirius one for free; not to mention the power sunroof (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr). If you want the auto tinting mirror, you can get it for $132 online, so don't pay Subaru $400; I'm thinking about getting it myself. I also ordered a Subaru dog barrier that they only sell in Europe from a U.K. Subaru dealer.

I really can't wait for the winter now. I got to drive during that last snowfall that we had in April and the Impreza's AWD dominated everyone at stop lights :cheesygri . When people were struggling, I accelerated as if I was on a dry surface. The only problem was stopping. This car will take you up to speed in the snow no problem while forgetting to tell you that because of the fact that you have all season tires on your car, you can't be stopped that easily. So this year I got a set of Nokian tires, but mind you the Bridgestone ER92's that are on their now are amazing in the rain and on dry pavement. I think each ER92 is $300, Subaru does not throw on cheap OEM tires.

Cars are barely even moving off the dealer lots these days. Buyers are in the drivers seat (no pun intended) if they have cash in hand.

I wouldn't pay PDI at all (biggest scam fee going in auto sales these days, IMHO), and not much over invoice, if at all.

Even paying invoice might be too much if the dealer is receiving rebates from the manufacturer.

ok, so i approached one dealer, and said i would pay $26,700. which is basically invoice cost plus the full cost of pdi etc...

they came back with "their best offer" !! of $27,744....

so thats still a fair bit over invoice, and still paying full price PDI, which is a rip off in my veiw. i mean when i buy a TV i dont pay for the shop to check its been built properly do i?

so what do you guys think of that figure?

freight & pdi is something u can't really get around i'm afraid... so whenever i buy a car, i'd rather buy a japanese-made japanese car since u'll pay the same freight and pdi as one that's shipped on a boat vs. one down the street (alliston, ontario)

i accept that, however a lot of people do avoid paying it.. i mean we dont pay freight on anything else do we (obviously we do but its inc in the cost)

ignoring that subject, what do you think of the price?

subaru have had a good year of sales up 21% this year, but september was slow, down -4% compared to last september..

im going to take that price to another dealer too, to see what they can do..

not sure how they can, aside from cash incentives?

price isn't bad... i paid 28500 for mine.. '07 special edition 5 speed... granted it has a different interior and more/different features... and i had to pay extra for my wrx wing... also, 28500 is ontario price...

i dunno, but some people are avoiding it, granted not necessarily with subaru...

the 07's were a totally different pricing though...

Check out the prices on cars101.com and see if you wouldn't be better off importing it from the US. You can count on paying approximately mid way between invoice and MSRP.

4.9% financing is high though :( if u're not in a rush, wait for the summer sales... my rate is 2.9% over 5... they usually drop their rates around may/june... it was 3.9% before... with this recession, maybe they'll drop the rates earlier?

hmm, i cant wait till the summer, and recessions normally mean higher finance rates..

my nissan we just bought had a great rate, 1.5% 60 months, but it was a lot more expensive than the subaru..

problem is with the new impreza they are selling so well the rates will stay high..

well i've already been offered lower than mid way between invoice and msrp..

importing it wouldnt be worth it, the specs arnt the same from the us, and i couldnt finance it as easily.. and the prices arnt that different. maybe save $2000 or so...

Actually, you are right according to the numbers I just ran using today's exchange rate ($1.10) and assuming 7% interest over 5 years. The total cost, including finance charges, of the American Impreza premium assuming midway between MSRP and invoice, is $29297. The total cost of the Canadian car assuming you get invoice price plus 5% is $31496.

Anyone know the msrp and invoice price for the automatic impreza 2.5i with sports package in Edmonton Alberta? What would be a target price to negotiate? The dealer quoted the base model to be around $26000 (after all fees), so the sports model should be around $28500. Does $25000 for the sports model sound reasonable? Thanks.

I felt the same way after I test drove the auto... Plus with the manual you get the full time 50/50 AWD split.

With the Auto, you don't get full time 50/50 split?

Edit: For Auto, it's 90/10 on dry roads and 60/40 if needed.

The fact is Subaru Impreza is harder to negotiate with the dealer than other models as they all have the same type of engine and lower markups than other models. Plus, Subaru sells well on Impreza. That's why you see Impreza is rarely put in cash incentive except old year clear out. Besides, Subaru produces limited Impreza globally per year and they do not really have overstock like other manufacturers. When I got my 09 Impreza, they usually with give you only $700 cash discount only. For you get more, try turn those cash discount demands into options - get upgrades to make up over $1000 value discounts. This is the most easy way, they are willing give free upgrades than real cash discounts.

If you are thinking big cash discounts, try outback.
