View Full Version : I hate bumper scuffs/scratches !

I'm pretty sure a bunch of this was here when I bought the car, but today, as I was parking, I usually line my side mirrors up with the car next to me, and I guess it has a higher bumper and i heard/felt the bumper starting to scrape against the curb, the very tip of it. Wow, I hit the brakes and reverse quick!
I know its the bumper... and more so on the underside, not something that people see directly when they look at your car, but it breaks my heart when I heard that scraping sound lol. Maybe I make too much of a deal just because it happened once, and its just the bottom of the bumper, I dont know, it just really got to me.
Anyone else share some images too? Does anyone else have this on their car, either from them or previous owners?

As you can see, the part of the bumper that drops lower than the center has taken some damage on the corners/edges.
I dont think I'll get that fixed/touched up since its basically on the underside of the bumper.

It sux, but there's really nothing much that you can do. Just drive the car as it is, and if you really like the car, maybe get it completely repainted later on. Also, those scrapes are really rough, and you'd need to sand the bumper hardcore, fill it up, prime it, then paint it. Lots of work, and I've tried fixing some scrapes and stone chips myself but find it to be too much trouble. I just left it as it is and maybe get a detailer to fix it later on.

I can probably do something about this for you.

kvilkhu - how much?
and Im pretty sure where I scraped it was just an addition to the very edge where its really rough, because i was going very slow and right when I heard the scraping, I stopped and backed up... the parts where the scratches continue farther back must be from the previous owner in addition to the edge ones I added to I guess.
I am thinking to just leave it like this, I mean, it doesnt effect the overall ride of the car or the appearance unless we are looking at just that specific part. If it was on the side of the door, I would get it fixed, obviously because that is very noticeable.
I actually couldnt tell how bad it was on that edge until after I took the picture today with the camera because I just placed the camera down and angled it that way, and was surprised to see how it looks from underneath.

I'd have to see the damage in person to give you a price. Where are you located?

Ask around, there should be places that do fix them. Even you may able to do a bit of touch up yourself by getting the same colour paint and clear coat.

if the car's your baby, fix it.
if it's a method of commuting, leave it.
I bought a used car from a girl who put scratches on every single panel (except the roof). I noticed how other cars never park too close to me thinking I'm a bad driver. It's great :)

Its both, we had the other exterior problems from the previous owner that we fixed, because they were very obvious. But this is just near the bottom, so not as big of a deal I guess. I dont want to fix this and possibly have to get the bumper resprayed to match the ZInc Yellow (which is not cheap) and then once I get new scratches on it from rock chips like most cars eventually get, I'll be even more pissed

wetsand 600 grit the area, follow by masking the area, two coats of primer (20 mins in between), 2 color coat layers (if any paint runs, wetsand), followed by the clear coat; followed by wetsand and polish. I did a DIY paintless scuff repair in the detailing thread but it might not help this one out (you still need to add paint). Scratches at areas like that are the worse for touch ups; best bet might be a color matched rattle can. Keep some cardboard to control the overspray and make sure you stay the minimum distance to prevent paint runs. Good thing it is just fiberglass though; won't need to worry about it rusting.
To answer your question; I have this on my vehicle from the prior owner too. My vehicle is much too low for me to do any job worth doing without either jacking up the vehicle or pulling off my bumper. My bumper already had a hit and run so I am not going to put the effort to repaint it when I am going to be replacing it.

How do you guys find the matching paint? most dealers seem to only sell crappy touch up "marker pen" which has very rough tip. I have some minor scrapes and scratches here and there that I'm considering touching up. I really hate deep scratches/dents where I need to apply some putty.

YOu can go to independent automotive paint stores. We have one here that will color match any vehicle paint color and do either rattle can or touch up jar.
Also most car companies use the same paint manufactuer so if you do a search for your vehicle color on Dupont you might get a hit and it should be a fairly good match (would be best to do exact color match though).
