I've been to Quebec for about half a year now, the winter is coming soon. When I was in Ontario I heard that winter tires are mandatory in Quebec province. My question is: if I drive my car without winter tires, will the cops pull me over and issue me a ticket for this??
By the way, I recently notice that every Montreal cop wears a small red cap!! What does that stands for?? I feel they look funny now, comapre to OPPs who always wear Texas styled hats, and look more intimidating.

Yes and no. If you look at the Transport Quebec (http://www.mtq.gouv.qc.ca/portal/page/portal/grand_public_en/vehicules_promenade/securite_routiere/securite_conditions_hivernales/reglement_utilisation_pneus_hiver#provisions) site, they have a FAQ for the mandatory winter tires law between December 15 to March 15.
If your car still has an Ontario plate, then you won't be forced to get winter tires. However, if you have a Quebec plate, then there are a few situations where you don't have to get winter tires.
It's probably best to just simply get winter tires. You have been in Quebec for the last 6 months and you have not seen the winters and the horrible winter driving here.

It's an ongoing pressure tactic. They've recently started wearing camo pants also. It's all to get a new contract. Not their usual gear.

If you have a Quebec License, you may be assessed as being a Quebec driver and still get the fine.
If you have moved to Montreal recently, you should be warned, Quebec doesn't plow roads properly, and the city of Montreal is the worst by far. Get snow tires, and if possible keep a shovel in your trunk. A real shovel, not one of those sandbox plastic cheapies.

Plus get CAA or other roadside assistance. Is a good thing to have in winter. :)
