Hey,

We just got a parking ticket for $75 for parking in a fire zone, when we parked right behind a college vehicle who was also parked in a fire zone.
We argued for abit and got the ticket cut in half, but I was reading and it is illegal for private parking lots to ticket you.

Is the college property crown or private in Onario? It is Georgian College to be exact.

Where did you read that it is illegal for private lots to ticket you?

I know here in London, impark hands out tickets and if you don't pay them, they go to collections.

My university (UWO) gives tickets out as well, however, they dont come after you. You are only screwed if you have a car registered in your name and dont pay, as in that case they will not give you your diploma upon graduation. I just picked up mine yesterday no problem despite having gotten 2 tickets, although my car is registered under my dad.

Does the infraction notice say "City of Barrie" on it? Municipal bylaw enforcement will ticket at Georgian for parking in a handicapped parking area (I'm not sure about fire routes).

The 'Georgian tickets' do not need to be paid, but non-payment may result in having your car towed from the college property in the future.

Do you have a fire zone sign in front of your house?

Private residential and private commercial areas are two different things ...

They aren't illegal they just may not be enforced by the government.

Under what theory would you have the right to tow my car for parking in front of your house?

it is illegal for private properties to issue tickets.

That's not quite correct. Many plazas, institutional properties like schools (uni, & colleges) residential properties (condos & rentals) have either city staff or private security staff issue tickets on private property for a variety of reasons.
They can be city supplied tickets with the officers appointed by the city to issue these tickets, or in some cases they are privately issed tickets that are often discussed on RFD.
Universities, and probably colleges use these private tickets and with hold student marks if the tickets remain unpaid.

Normally when they are going to tow the vehicle, they issue a ticket for the violation first.

i didn't mean just in front of my house, an example would be if u parked your car in my driveway for instance without my permission, i have a right to move it...
happens all the time where i live.
some people park in other people's spots and some get towed.
The towing is not requested by management but by owners.
And yes, the tickets might not be "illegal" (actually wrong selection of word on my end cos they are not going against the law by issuing it), but as someone stated, they are not enforced by the law.

So, if tickets aren't the answer to people parking in non-designated parking areas, what is? If it's such a scam to get a ticket when you can't park where you are supposed to, what do you propose as a deterrent? There's only a few alternatives to tickets that I can think of.
Do nothing, which would result in people just leaving their car wherever they please, as there would be no consequences.
Leave little notes asking people nicely to park where they are supposed to - because that's guaranteed to work.
Have a fleet of tow trucks and tow everyone that parks illegally. And then stick them with towing/impound fees - I actually like this alternative, but it's not likely to happen.

So realistically, for this school to enforce their parking regulations, tickets really seem like the only reasonable alternative.
