View Full Version : Discount clothing store in USA - Like Winners

Just wondering if there is a discount clothing store in USA similar to the Winners stores we have in Canada, particularly in Houston. Prices are better at the stores already and I imagine discount store prices would be ridiculously cheap. Already checked out an Outlet mall and prices weren't all that much cheaper than the brand's regular prices.

Thanks.

Check Burlington Coat Factory. When I was in Boston, I bought lot of stuff at reasonable prices and branded.

+1 for Burlington - a lot of wicked deals there if you are in a deal-hunting mood. not very organized though, you need to be the deal-hunting type!

PS - They have great prices on ski gear in the late fall / early winter season! Might be a bit early now though.

Since you'll be down south make sure to check out Ross for awesome deals.

If you drive down you can also hit Filene's basement on the way...mostly east coast chain though.

T.J. Maxx and Marshalls are very similar to Winners because all three have the same corporate ownership. Therefore, if your time is limited, you may want to try the other suggestions for a change.

I only shop for clothing in the US and I have to say, these stores outlined on here are he best.

I don't like Winners, at all, but as someone pointed out, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Winners and Homesense are all under the same ownership. I find Winners to be not as organized, doesn't have the same selection and is way more expensive than Marshalls, even given the exchange rate. That being said, I find TJ Maxx a bit more expensive than Marshalls.

Of all these stores, I find Ross has the best prices but it a bit less tidy and just a bit dowdier than say TJM or Marshalls, but you can find some amazing deals there. You will often find the original manufacturer price tags on items and it's shocking how much less they charge at these stores. They sell all of the name brands and designer brands, and they're not knock-offs.

In Myrtle Beach this past winter, I bought a beautiful, lined pant suit. Larry Levine label, with a $240 original price tag on it and I got it for $26. The thing is in perfect condition, not a mark on it. I could go on and on with a list of things I've purchased in these stores and the deals I got.

There is one major problem with shopping at these stores. They will ruin you for shopping anywhere else and I'm not joking. I never shop here in Canada anymore as I just cannot justify the expense.

I find that Burlington Coat Factory tends to be far messier and disorganized, at least in the two I've shopped in (Buffalo and Atlantic City). Many of the Marshalls have a huge shoe section with some fabulous deals. Don't be afraid of looking through the clearance sections of these stores. You'll be shocked at the deals in there.

There are several Ross stores (full name Ross Dress for Less) in Houston, just do a search.

Another store worth mentioning is Steinmart. It's not really the same as these other stores, BUT in all honesty, it's a fabulous store with fantastic offerings, prices and selection. Definitely worth a look-see.

just wanted to echo the pp's statement about burlington coat factory...i find it terribly messy and disorganized. i don't even find their clothes to be of that great quality or prices so i don't even step foot in there.

i have been in locations in about 4 different states and they are all the same...

I know exactly what you mean. I only buy my clothes in stores in PA (no taxes on clothes there) and I do most of my grocery shopping in the states now too. When I see prices here in Canada, I almost cringe. We truly get ripped off here, on almost everything.

Hahaha..... I remember the first time I went into that store. My face almost dropped to the floor. I couldn't believe the deals they had.

I was at Steve and Barry's last week (in Buffalo) and the sign showed they were closing 100 of their stores but that the Buffalo store wouldn't be closing.

Another store that has some great deals, especially when they have a sale which they often do on the weekend, is Kohls.

There are a couple of other department stores that I'm familiar with and I love it when they have sales as the deals are ridiculous. I bought a beautiful pebbled leather jacket there last winter for $68. It was 75% off. When they have sales down there, they reduce the prices for real. They will redtag an item that is say $65 original. They'll reduce it to say $35 and then after a time they'll take 25% off the reduced price, then 50%, then 75% if it doesn't sell. It's like nothing you will ever see up here. And we're not talking junk here, we're talking top quality merchandise. While JCPenny and Macy's are great, the two I love down in SC are Belk, and Dillards. Fantastic stores.

I used to buy a lot of groceries in the states but nowadays, aside from meat and milk (which I refuse to buy from the US due to their excessive use of hormones), the deals are few and far between.

I find Walmart Canada has better prices than Walmart US on most groceries. Just one example I remember I noticed on my most recent trip, a pack of Jello pudding mix in the US around here is > $1.10!! I couldn't believe the price, when on sale in Canada it is usually $0.50 and regular price is $0.75 or something. This is just one example there are many others.

The main groceries I buy in the US nowadays just tend to be things not sold here yet.

Regarding Steve and Barry's, when I was there a couple of weeks ago, the sign very clearly showed that it (the Walden Galleria location) was NOT closing, so unless they were lying, or they've changed their minds, it should be staying open.

I don't find the prices in Michigan to be much of a bargain anymore either and I go quite often living on the border. Many times groceries prices are roughly the same if not more expensive so it's definitely not worth anyone driving out of their way to go for groceries, it's not out of my way and I still don't buy much over there. If anything they do have a way way better selection to choose from is all and you'll find things there you can't get here. But then you can get things here that you can't get in Michigan as well... And to hear the people from Michigan they think we have a better selection and better stuff.

I was in the SuperWalmart the other day and their prices aren't much different than the our SuperWalmart either. Some stuff is, some stuff isn't, some stuff is cheaper here.

I agree that Michigan is not the best place to get groceries across the border. For groceries, I go to the New York State border as their milk and meat prices are insanely cheap. For example, you can get 1 gallon of milk (4 L) for $1.99. I can usually get a dozen eggs (large) for 99 cents a dozen. I can get a pound of lean ground turkey for 99 cents a pound. I can also get 80/20 ground beef for almost the same price. I can buy a 44 oz bottle of Heinz Ketchup for $2.14 (this is the regular price) where here in Canada it is almost $6.00!!!

You just have to know which stores to hit. The Walmart Superstore in Amherst, NY tends to have prices a lot lower than the Michigan Walmarts.

I've been to BCF and do agree it's messy, but if you have the time to look, you can find a decent amount of deals.

I got a pair of Lugz shoes, for $20 and I think retail was $60 - not a big savings, but good deal.

I want to hit AJ Wrights, TJM, Marshalls and Kohls sometime.. maybe closer to Christmas.

At Ross, they have some hidden gems, but I rarely find anything decent when I go there for some reason..

$8.98...everything in the store is $8.98. Sometimes they have sales where everything in the store is $7.98. Except t-shirts which are 2/$15 IIRC.

The truth about Ross is yes, there is a lot of cr*p there, but there are also a LOT of gems. I have purchased several dresses there and they are of the same quality that you would get at Laura's or Melanie Lynnes and I paid less than $20 for each of them. You do have to be careful though.

Yep and I will expand this to say that it includes their shoes (Starburys, etc), jackets, hoodies and coats. They have several exclusive lines by people like Sarah Jessica Parker, Venus Williams, etc. I love the Bitten line by SJP and the Venus line is great sports inspired pieces. Last winter we picked up pur daughter a down filled, satin and faux fur trimmed bomber style winter jacket for $8.98. :cheesygri Our boys live in their not so politically correct t-shirts as well...

If you look at the list of closing on the S&B website neither of the WNY stores are closing. Both Walden and SUmmit Mall locations are staying open.

I always get stuck finding something decent in XXXXL...

You should definitely check out MACY's when you are there.

I went back in May on a trip to Florida and really lucked out. They had all of their previously reduced merchandise an extra 50% off (Nine west tops $9, Ralph Lauren kids dresses, polos, shirts, $10, etc.)

PLUS, you get an additional 11% off with a visitors pass (http://www.macys.com/store/about/visitor/index.jsp) (all you need to do is show your passport) and an additional 20% off for opening a Macy's card account.
I applied for a Macy's card on the spot and just paid off the purchases in cash right after checkout. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand the 31% off applies to designer items like COACH. Macy's always puts their Coach items on sale. Got a COACH Bleeker Flap bag (http://slimages.macys.com/is/image/MCY/products/1/optimized/445691_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=325&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg) for $157 taxes in which was selling for $398 plus tax in Toronto!

Also got great deals on BCBG, DKNY & RL stuff from Marshalls & TJMaxx!!

''Exactly because I am willing to bet it's not in Ont due to the lovely dairy marketing board that controls the pricing. ;) I'm even willing to go so far as to call BS (in Ont) on this one....
