I've always heard my friends talk about how they make such crazy money working at car dealerships, but have been hesitant to try it out because of fear of working in a pure commission environment.

My one friend got in at a dealership near my house and for shits I went to go meet the manager, I have a strong background in sales (retail banking), but I explained to him that i didn't want the stress of being full commission as I'm also a student and i need a guaranteed income for bills/tuition etc.

He ended up offering me a base salary of $3500 a month (more than I make as a FA...) and then commission ON TOP of it (%30 on gross profit like all the other guys make)

This seems a little too good to be true to me, although its been confirmed a couple of other co-workers.

Can anyone with some experience in this field tell me if this is common practice? Am i missing something here?

3500$ base salary is too good to be true.

However 30% commission of the profit make for the car is reasonable.

That is certainly a good offer. Are you sure the commission is ON TOP of the 3500 a month, or is the 3500 the amout you are guaranteed, but if the 30% commission ammounts to more than the 3500 you get that.

Whatever happens, get something in writing, preferably a contract for a set period of time if you can swing that. If you want to try it, go for it, give it a try, why not?

For $3500 + commission a month, I'd do it for a heartbeat.

That is an amazing offer, its much better then what I get or even heard of, I'd look over the sales contract carefully. I'm guessing you'd probably have a quota you have to meet too. Although you're in Edmonton, I'm curious to know what auto make dealership is this? Thanks
