Today, I saw MAGNAVOX blu-ray for 199 at Walmart. It looks like a pretty descent deal.

They are only 1.1 profile. It is exactly the same as the Insignia BR player. Made by the same Chinese manufacturer.

I'd sooner buy the Sony BDSP100 for $179 at BB

Can't believe the price of BR hardware coming down so fast, it's down to the price point of a popular HDDVD model a year ago (A2 was around $199 last September).

Software is still overpriced tho.

I was looking at the Song bdps300 but it doesn't bitstream TrueHD or DTS-MA:(

The Magnavox and Insignia will output hd audio streams via hdmi:)

I look forward to the usual "Buy the PS3 instead! Help Sony in the console wars." comments.

Wonder if this is the new MAGNAVOX updated version or the first release player?

BDPS300 was an entry model to penetrate the economy user market, way overpriced with a $549 original tag. Stay away from it if you want the latest BR functions.

Can't believe the price of BR hardware coming down so fast

Why, Blu-ray is dying and DVD unit sales are increasing relative to BD - Sony is on the verge of driving the format into the ground, and losing out to digital HD.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080923-blu-ray-stutters-in-face-of-tough-economy-hd-downloads.html

There is a sentiment growing that BD has missed the boat - I meet with people and whenever movies are brought up, they start talking about HD movies on SD cards, HD downloads, HD-on-demand, and how expensive Blu-ray movies and hardware is. Not to mention that if you start buying BD movies, then you need replace ALL of the players in your house.

HD-DVD/DVD combo disks were the only hope for a next-generation HD physical media....

Stay away from them all - I just saw a press release that Panasonic has developed a DivX HD Blu-ray chip that will allow full HD playback of DivX content on next-generation BD players.

Again, Sony is hurting bad, so they're going to allow the next-gen players to have all the features to drive consumers, even online pirates.

I find it hard to stay away from Blu-ray. It's the only 1080p format that is readily-available for me.

i agree^^ however i aslo agree Sony is gonna kill BR due to their own marketing stupidity. all their discs should initially have had BR and standard DVD to ease peoples transition into the thext gen formats. not to mention Sony machines are notorious for NOT letting consumers play downloaded files, divx or what have you. for that reason alone i will not buy Sony. Id say most consumers dont heven have 1080P monitors/tvs so BR is a complete waste to them. thats my 2cents

HTPC's are where its at. Ive got two turn tables and a microphone.

It was $299 in the local WM today. Perhaps the price will be dropped for next week's sale?

I think you can do that without the turntables these days.

Why does everyone spout "Sony" this "Sony" that when speaking of Blu-Ray???

Sony is NOT Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray is NOT Sony. Sony has ONE seat on the BDA out of 18. They are also ONE member out of 94.

There are also companies just as big as Sony on the board of directors.

HD Divx playback would be cool... but unless they start releasing encoded discs its pretty useless... The percentage of people who would D/l or encode such a format is extremely minuet in the overall picture... the masses will still prefer to be able to buy or rent readily available discs.

Hehe. It's a reference to the Beck song, Where It's At. Off the Midnight Vultures album, I think.

BDA was created by Sony as well as other companies such as LG and Pioneer.

Its funny, since when I bought my DVD player back in about 94 I think, it was over $500... makes this look like a steal.

But back then coming from VHS to DVD was like a huge change....

Average consumers arent getting the BR thing... when an average dvd player costs $50 and a nice one maybe $100, its hard to justify spending $200-$400+ for BR player, plus the $20-$40 for movies....

Rentals are increasing I noticed at our local Blockbuster but still only a small percentage...

Prices need to keep coming down....

And seven other companies. People say Sony because they want to make it sound like Sony was the company pushing another proprietary format against the industry.

no
there was no 7 other companies in the initial design phase
it was just sony and philips trying to make a new technology using blue lasers

the "Bda" didn't form until later

Sony calls the shots on the Blu-Ray format and all the other "seats" defer to Sony on pretty much everything, not to mention it is Sony who pays other studios to use the format. Until the other seats wrestle away the format from Sony, Blu-Ray actually does equal Sony.

Sorry if I am getting too much off-topic.

$200 is not a bad price for a Profile 1.1 player that can bitstream HD audio formats. Cheaper than a PS3 and fits nicer into a HT setup. Only problem really is that it's a a MagnetBox. :cheesygri

$200 for a player is quite reasonable. But I think the BR discs are over-priced. Most titles are priced between $30 - $40.
