Dell has launched a sweet looking new product - the M109S Pocket-Sized Projector for $499 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=CAqD7bLWUPI&offerid=137979.690134619&type=10&subid=).
Info:
- 3.64" x 4.12" x 1.46" and a mere 0.80 pounds
- 858 x 600 SVGA Native Resolution
- utilizes mercury-free LED light source of usage life up to 10,000 hours
- easy Connectivity with a multi-input cable for easy connectivity to laptops, desktops, DVD players and gaming consoles.
I think it'd be great if you need to make presentations on the go and don't have consistent access to A/V equipment (that or you just want a really small projector you can take anywhere). $499 with free shipping is pretty reasonable too.

I would be so eager to bite on this one, but with out any reviews, it is kinda hard. Only 50 lumens, but 800:1 contrast may make up for it. Just not sure how it would perform. I really like the LED light source.
For me, I would want this for tv/video apps, not presentations. I would like it to take camping, for watching the big fights, or the football games. I would like this to just carry around with me, going to friends places that do not have a big screen, etc.
Hmmm....contemplating.

Looks like a neat product... it's also $499 US on Dell.com so you're getting a more than fair exchange on this one :)

Seems sweet but i doubt it will have too big of a market. I might consider getting one for lan parties.:cheesygri Instead of looking @ a 17" screen, i could stare @ the wall.:cheesygri

i heard it tested very well with some reviewer "consumer reports?". anyhow I'm in the market for 2 projectors (a 3d project of mine) i'd be all over it if it was 399, at 499 i'm on the edge, perhaps some china clone manufacturers can come out with a cheaper line... hopefully free of melamine =)

WOW, that's actually a great idea, way less weight to lug around.

It is good for watching downloaded movies on wall upto 50" (i guess) in low light conditions.

Chinese made projectors are very attractive in terms of unit price, replacement bulb cost and life but there are some concern (a) Color temperature (b) Cheapo bulb may be throwing out UV and Of'Course (c) Melamine ...lol

^^ What kind of lenses are used? Most "sodium" glass lenses intrinsically filter UV light. And of course, color temp can be adjusted via PC and melamine is safe to handle... just not to eat :P

I don't know if you need a UV filter as its not powered by a halogen backlight, its LED.
That said, there might be a slight quality issue with colour accuracy as not too many - if any LED combinations can really create a true white (mind you not many CCFL can either, that doesn't seem to bother most LCD users)
Melamine? Those Mr Clean magic erasers are just gigantic blocks of melamine - so don't let your dog or child chew on it.

Only 50 lumens,
Sounds like junk to me.

Yeah, the unit only draws a maximum of 47 watts.
So don't expect it to project a screen bigger than maybe two to three feet in a very dark room.
Really, a 500+ watt halogen unit is what you need to do those big six+ foot presentations. But also, the bulb on those units usually only last between 500 and 1,000 hours a good 20x less than a LED bulb.

What I'm curious to know is how does the password protection work? "Keep critical presentations safe and secure."
You don't store data on the projector, you connect video sources. No?
Also, it shows the multi-connector with pretty much just composite and VGA. Where are all the other stuff like component and/or HDMI, which it lists under Video Compatability.

hopefully we'll see this during the next round of Dell's Days of Deals... for around $399, that would be ok for a new toy

I'll end up grabbing one if it drops in price ($399 would be my buy-it price point).
I'd like connect it to my laptop and play low-res games (most emulator games, etc.) on the wall. For that price and bulblife, it'd be fun! I'd also use it as media centre monitor at parties (just have some vidoes, music playing, etc.). Beats having a friend knock over a flat screen. It would be fun to mount in my patio and project onto the wall near my hot tub. No worries about water+electricity and I could watch the football game at the same time.
I see lots of nifty non-HD-required uses for that little toy.
Damn...I think I might just buy one now.
