Wow. This has been up for 50 minutes and no one has droned on about HD-DVD being a dead format that you'd have to be insane to buy an HD-DVD player. I'm pleasantly surprised. Or maybe most don't know it is one since it isn't in the thread title.

Too bad it's so far away. I had a friend who was looking for a good upscaling dvd player and I had mentioned that these were better at it than Oppo. He ended up buying a PS3 for everything else that it can do too, but still....weird that this thread would show up now.

Good deal. Alot of people have HD dvds and also picked up the walmart clearance of 2 for $10 and perhaps need back-up players since they wont be sold anymore.

Too bad they are not closer or ill go grab one as well.

That is exactly why I wanted another - as a backup for the 50+ movies I have...

Wish I could get one but Windsor is too far. Not only for the HDDVD's but buy it for the upconverting capabilities also.

HD-DVD is a dead format, no ones read the threads anymore, let alone comments in them. :P

I disagree, I think everyone that bought a cheap HD-DVD player is mowing along fine with their 2-$10 purchases and are very content with the upscaling of their regular DVD library.

Blu-ray owners are probable a bit disappointed that Blu-ray didn't take over the way DVD did over VHS. And with the trend of a weakening US economy, the small niche of AV enthusiasts, doesn't look like the casual consumer wants to pay for the luxury of replacing their DVD library by going all blu-ray.

That being said, I would not blink to pick up another A3 if I was closer to Windsor and I'm still waiting for the right time (price) to plunk on a PS3.

DVD players took a long time to take over VHS. I remember my first DVD player back in 1997. It was a Pioneer unit and cost 600-700 CDN. I only had one movie then and they were released in the cheap plastic and cardboard box backing. Dumb and DUmber was the title. LOL
That was HIGH DEF back in the days.

They only took over VHS in sales and rental around 2002-2003. Thats 5 years.

BD sales will definately slow especially with the weaken economy this year.

To get an HD DVD player that not only plays HD DVD discs, but also plays & upconverts Standard DVD's as good or better than an Oppo player for $48 bucks........Sweet Deal Indeed !!

Blu-Ray was dead before it was even born !! LOL .....As another Poster mentioned, the saging US economy and potential financial collapse of the US economy as a "superpower" and people tightening their wallets........all I can say is ..........when you have such great "upconversion" SDVD players like the HD Toshiba players, Good luck in trying to get people to convert to your expensive none backward compatable, Blu-Ray format Sony !! :cheesygri

The fact that you replied to someones comment counteracts that statement.

For those who deem HD-DVD players useless, try finding a better upconverting DVD player for $48.

the fact that Blu-ray movie sales dropped in July and August and are still in the single digit doesn't make it that much more alive than HD-DVD.

if you don't play PS3 games getting 5-8 times cheaper upconverting player that also plays cheapo HD-DVD's makes sense to some of us

I have a PS3 and and an XBOX 360 Hd Dvd player.. I still prefer to pay $5.00 for Hd DVD's than buying the same titles on Blu-Ray for 18.83 or more..For those who went and purchased this player, which movies did you guys get free with the Toshiba A3?

Chatham has no stock other than display, but they can get you one from Windsor, after you pay first. Why would anyone buy from Tepperman's. Their return policy is a 7 day re-select... WTF, I said that sucks and the guy tried to tell me that no electronics stores have a better return policy... so I went on to explain FS, BB, The Source, Sears, Walmart, etc etc... he said he highly doubted that they offered 30 days... What an ass... needless to say, did not order one... still on the fence and I am not getting stuck with this machine!

How are you getting stuck with it? It's one of the better players out there for standard DVD's as well.

That and the fact that it's $50 made me laugh when I read that...thanks! :cheesygri

Because i already have an upconverting dvd player, and don't need this one, but thought, I would take it home try it out, like any other store would allow you. I have had Toshiba players in the past and basically, the compatibility of certain types of burned discs, as well as wait time and such, really, would make me want to try it out.

I have had the A2 as well as the Walmart one before and both were so slow and unpredictable... will wait for the Blu ray to drop again boxing day!

The A3 is technically identical to the "Walmart" one. If you didn't like it, you would have the same issues...

Thats what I had read... a while back our local The Brick store, had the A3 for $50 but I didn't bite then either... now watch, they will decide to reissue HDDVD!

LOL...wouldn't that be a hoot if the HD DVD writing strategy somehow got "restored" and became the "mainstream" HD playback format that succeeds ? !!

But it blew up at the end of the 90's, The Matrix being released was a HUGE selling feature. I bought my Toshiba dual-disc player for about $700 with my first bonus check at work, it was an awesome player (that still works, mind) and A&B had a STUPIDLY massive selection of movies even at that time.

Remember though - BluRay has been out since 2002, and the first player in 2003... but I guess $3800 might have been a bit steep ;)

To be honest, it was around 2006 that it firmly started to come into the market. But it's been 2 years now, and although the economy sucks - people are more in-tune with HD now than they've ever been. YOu can get a HD TV for well under $800, almost as cheap as a larger sized CRT back in the day - it's so much more accessible.

Although the fact that standard upconverting DVD players can be had for under $50 shows that upconverting is going to be hard to surpass for the general population.

On another note, until recently, most people were still on dial-up, and in some cases still are.

Regardless, the A3 is a great upconverting player, and if you can get the deals on HD movies, you can EASILY find them for under $10 each, and seeing that most of the movies I own are movies I wanted and could get for 1/3rd the price - It was a great deal. Plus I have a stand-alone upconverting player.

+1 FTW ;)

It is the responsibility of all HD-DVD owners to bash all Blu Ray threads whenever they appear
