This may be a silly question but I'll ask it anyway....
When I give my car in for maintenance work to a mechanic, am I supposed to leave a copy of my insurance in the glove compartment?
Thanks in advance

Insurance papers always stay in my wallet, so my answer would be "no".

Never ever ever leave any insurance papers in your car. If it was ever stolen, guess the theif would have proof of insurance now wouldn't he?
Now, when a mechanic is working on your car, their garage auto policy will come into affect in regards to insurance. Why should you be responsilbe insurance wise if they have your car under their care , custody & control? This is called by definition" A Bailee for Hire>>
Bailee: A person to whom goods are entrusted. A gratuitous bailee is one who has the property of another without consideration. e.g., a neighbour stores a wheelbarrow in the winter without payment and merely for convenience of the owner (bailor). A bailee for hire is one who makes a profit or charge for his services in storing the goods of the bailor (customer). e.g., a furrier (bailee) storing a fur coat for a customer (bailor). A greater degree of care is required in the case of the bailee
for hire.
Does that help in your decision?

I think you are thinking about registration papers. What's a thief going to do with your car insurance paper? They need the proof of ownership not proof of insurance. You should have your registration on your person, but insurance paper can stay with the car.

lol, what's good for the thief to have insurance paper? the papers have your name on it. It only has your contact information and yada yada on it, which is meant to be given away in case of an accident anyway.

i keep hearing two stories in regards to ownership
1)leave a photocopy of the ownership in the car
2)leave original copy of ownership in the car (or at least half of it since there are two identical sides of the ownership)
which one do i follow?

Personally I toss everything in the car, inside the insurance paper wallet. Some people take all the papers with them in the wallet. The problem in either case is that, if your car gets stolen, you lose all papers. If your wallet got lost, you lose all papers. Ideally, you can either leave half in car and take half with you. OR have the photocopies certified by a lawyer and toss the photocopies in the car. I have to think about how should I keep mine also :p

I remember reading in my insurance policy that licensed mechanics are not covered, if they are acting as such. Mechanics need to have their own insurance when driving customers' cars, at least in Ontario.

Has your car ever been stolen?
yes - no concerns
as long as you have a phone...and can remember the name of your insurance company ... you should be okay

Don't forget, times have changed, crooks are getting more serious, Identify theft is much higher now compared to 10yrs ago.
Just because I"ve never been shot 10 yrs ago when I was in high school.... doesn't mean a kid won't get shot now in high school right?

my point exactly - don't get to comfortable cause you never know and why would you even take a chance? also keep in mind the VIN #, your name and addy are all on the insurance papers that you just left in the car...hmm..makes u think doesn't it.

Guess where else your VIN# is.....Stamped on your car!
Good thing I just keep the car locked up in the garage. Driving it would be to risky.

I am amazed that forum of value seekers would be so nonchalant about protecting personal property.

I keep the insurance card and a photocopy of the ownership in my wallet.
The original ownership is in a file folder at home.
Nothing remains in the car.

I always have proof of insurance and registration documents locked in my car. Never have any issues. I just don't like to keep these documents in wallet as I have heard many stories that he/she was in a hurry and left the wallet at home and got a ticket. Went to court and blah blah......... So, you are better off locking documents in your car.

Keep mine in my wallet and always will, last thing I need is some douche bag trying to use my personal information for anything. Call it paranoia, I'll call you ignorant in return.
The mechanic's shop has insurance for a reason and this covers the cars. Any doubt's, just ask and read the work order sheet.
