first time to buy windshield washer fluid. Any brand should be suggested for summer & winter season? thanks in advance.

I use Rain-x fluid but just about any brand you get from a gas station is good.
If you go with Rain-x, it's pink for summer, yellow for winter. The winter formula also has a de-icing agent in it which is nice.

I personally don't like rain-x, it seems to leave streaks and a film on the windows. Also, I don't use anything that has teflon in it, it also streaks and leaves a residue everywhere.
I get and use any old -40 for the winter and, in the summer I used 50% water and 50% windex or some other cheap window cleaner.

I ususally buy whatever is on sale .... used to get -40 for as low as 99 cents - now they either cut the alcohol down so it's -35 or raise the price.
It amazes me when I see -40 at the 401 service centres in winter being sold for $4 to the poor folks who run out and have no other alternative than to pay.

DITTO! My wife says my wiper is screwed but I'm pretty sure it is the rain-x (pink).
How do I drain off all the wiper fluid? Siphon them out?

I've never had a problem with Rain-x and streaking. But I keep my wiper blades fresh and replace them every 6 months, with Rain-x blades too.

The yellow rain-x smells funny. With the generic blue stuff, I've had it film and then freeze on me plenty of times... never with the yellow rain-x though.

I wish we can buy 99 cent jugs again.
I used to use them throughout the summer too. I find the alkie does same job as summer stuff. A waste to spray it all out and replace it in with alkie in the winter.
But now for the summer, I just mix cash wash soap into water and that's that. Free. That should offset $3-4 jugs a bit.

+1 Except for replacing them every 6 months. I just wipe down the Blades whenever I can.
The problem with Rain-X is that you can't just apply once or every few months.
Try to apply it whenever you can and when it Rains, you will see the difference.

I think people are talking about 2 different things here.
There's Rain-X the water repellant stuff you wipe on your windshield and there's Rain-X the windshield fluid.
Personally, I avoid Rain-x or any other water repellent. If you stop applyind it, the windshield gets really really nasty and collect rain rather then slide off. It's actually worse then never applying it in the first place.

thanks for clarify that. I also heard total different experience of Rian-x. So Rain-X the windshield fluid is really good?

Rain-X makes many products from rain repellent, to windshield washer fluid to bug removal fluid to wipers etc. All have the rain beading "technology" built in.
I find they streak when used in the washer fluids and I never did like the process of applying the repellent. Once applied, it seems to be near impossible to remove (that includes the stuff in the washer fluid).

I've found the trick to this is not to have the vehicle hot or in direct sunlight.

Sorry to hijact OP's thread but I have a question. My friend fills his fluid with water whenever he gets the warning light. (not too often)
Is this a bad choice? He doesn't do it all the time but just under certain circumstances only.

I dont see the problem. Your saying he only fills it when its nearly empty? Whats the problem?

He always forgets to buy washer fluid so whenever he get a "low fluid" sign, he puts enough water so that he doesnt get the "beep" anymore.

I have no idea why anyone would avoid Rain-X or other rain repellent on the windshield. IMO it's unsafe to drive in the rain without it. Anytime I rent a car or am in a car without it (even as a passenger) it's a total difference in visibility/safety.
I've never heard nor seen a windshield "get nasty" or "collect" rain with a rain repellent on it
It's also hilarious to see people driving on the highway in a rainstorm with their wipers going like mad while I literally don't need to use wipers at all above 80km/h or so and can still see 10x better than them. What's not so hilarious is when these retards get in front of you going 80km/h in the left lane thinking they are "going fast" because they can't see anything while they are only pissing you off as you try to pass them
That said I do actually avoid Rain-X these days, not because it isn't a good product but because Aquapel/Vision Blade is a much better product. Lasts longer and wipers do not end up chattering/skipping on the glass like they do with Rain-X. Since Aquapel is a different product and works differently, no Rain-X fluid is necessary or even desired.
Personally I think not using a rain repellent on your auto glass is just as stupid/dangerous as not using winter tyres for winter conditions, but perhaps that's just me--I like to see when I'm driving and all, lol.

Rain-X you can't really "remove" it but it will wear away after a few months. It may take as much as a year to totally go away (no beading whatsoever) but it loses it's main effectiveness within a month or two if not reapplied. If you use the wiper fluid you are essentially re-applying to some degree every time you use your washer but then that only gets on the windshield and only where the fluid is sprayed/wiped, so it's not quite as good as a real application.
If you don't like Rain-X so much but enjoy the safety/visibility of the beading, you may want to try Aquapel (aka Vision Blade) instead--it's easier to apply and works better (IMO). I've never really seen wipers streak with Rain-X but I do remember wipers didn't contact the windshield as well with Rain-X on (chattering/skipping I mentioned before). With Aquapel this doesn't happen. It lasts much longer too, but this may be good or bad if you for some reason don't like it. BTW, Aquapel was engineered/made by, and endorsed for use by, a major glass company (PPG).

How did I completely miss that? :cheesygri
Water is bad, just ignore the beeping till you buy more fluid.
