View Full Version : HELP is this SUIT too big?

So a few weeks ago I go on a trip to NY and check out the Macy's in Manhattan. I discover a very nice tapered suit. It's 100% whool and it's an "Alfani:, which is Macy's store brand. It is a knock off of a Hugo Boss Suit and is called the "Alfani Red". It retailed for 269.99 and was on sale.

I decided to pass on the suit and immediately had remorse. Lucky for me my mom was going to florida the next week, so I ordered it on the Macy's website and had it delivered to the address in the US she was staying at.
Now I've got my suit, I'm pleased with the quality, but I think I made a bad decision. I usually wear a size 42 jacket. But when I put it on in the store I found it just a little too fitted. So I ordered a 44 instead. Now I feel like the 44 is too big. What should I do? There is the option of getting the suit tailored, or I could try to ship it back to Florida, have them exchange it, and bring it back up here when they come to visit us in a month or so. It could use a pressing. 'cause it got slightly wrinkled during shipping. Opinions Please

Not too sure on how much the tailor can do on the sleeves. But she/he can defiantly do something about the waist part.

Yes, about 2-3 sizes too big.
No tailor is going to be able to fix it to fit decently; the main issues are that the shoulders are too wide, arms too loose and armholes too low.
The shoulder width is the most glaring problem. A well-fitting suit you should be able to JUST see the deltoid (shoulder muscle) at the shoulder, rather than hanging straight down like that. The top shoulder pad should NOT extend past your shoulder at all (e.g. if you leaned against the wall wearing the jacket, your shoulder would touch the wall before the suit does).

OK what about if I called up a Macy's in Buffallo and told them the deal. Do you think they'd let me exchange without the receipt?

Wait you ordered from the website? Did you set up a user profile? If you did does the website save reciepts or send you an email with the order number plus tracking information? I know chapters.ca for example lists every order I've ever submitted to them in my account.

Yeah I have confirmation emails which aren't the same as the receipt that they ask for according to their web page. I am going to call a store in Buffallo and hopefully they A- Have stock and B- Aren't a@#hooles

It's a 44 jacket - what is your chest size ?
Also, keep in mind, if you do any sort of serious weight training you're going to be putting on some mass not only on your chest, but also on your triceps and especially your anterior, lateral and posterior deltoids - and if your deltoids are developed you may have a difficult time getting a proper fit thru the shoulder of the jacket such that a 44 may be your only option.
Before you do anything, I'd find a small tailor shop close to home that does their own custom work, try your jacket on there and get their opinion on the fit of your shoulders and chest.
You definitely need your sleeves shortened anyway and the tailor can tell you whether or not your jacket needs to be taken in ' slightly ' or not.

I'm pretty deez in the chest(If I may say so myself) and somewhat in the arms so I felt the 42 wasn't quite right...Right now I'm little smaller than I was when I took these pics but with a few months of hard work I might be back @ this size...hence the choice of the 44.

The pics weren't necessary.
Like I said before ...visit a tailor.

+1. Visit a tailor and see what they can do.
I'm not sure what they can do around the torso, but the sleeves can definitely be shortened.
I have short arms (~3" too short compared to normal) so all the jackets I buy off the rack have to have the sleeves adjusted. I bring them to my "tailor" and she takes the sleeves off the jacket and shortens it from the top to preserve the cuffs.

yeah the pics might have been a bit unness...but given that this thread is about how a suit fits my body proportions ...maybe pictures of my body may have been in order.
( and the only reason I took them was to track my progress 'cause before that I was about 20 pounds over weight).
Anyone got recommendations for a tailor?

I was thinking the exact same thing.
You come to a thread about suits and you find a picture of a SUIT-less guy.
Also, no where in poedua's original post do I see him ASK anything that would lead you to think you should post pictures......

ROFL +1. Fashion is going NSFW. I really really didn't need/want to see that.
To your original post, I guess it could be a bit more fitted. As with almost any clothing, fitted is best.

Pretty much all suits you buy... you have to get it tailored.
Anyone here buy a suit and not get it tailored?!

LMFAO... sorry to all that were offended but jeez.. poedua said :

And the 42 suit was a little snug in all those positions so I was looking to partly see if people thought a 42 would fit me or If I should get the 44 altered to fit MY dimensions...
But again, my apologies. I probably would have clowned someone just as bad if they made the same post so I'll take the jokes :P Seriously though, I figured I would have a PM box full of messages from dudes in here that would want to take me out on a date :P
OK... so the verdict is get this suit tailored, instead of going on a Bus Trip to Buffalo for a 42 that might not fit?
Next question: Where and how much?

do it the RFD and forget altering , just workout hard and get bigger

seriously dude, just go for the Deion Sanders look when he's wearing a suit.
and my sympathy for not being able to find the right size. I workout myself, not as deezd as you but finding clothes sometimes suck. It's either too big, too small, etc etc. I sometimes get my shirts cut short since I have to wear bigger sizes and I'm not really that tall.

How about..." maybe NOT ".
Posting pictures of yourself with your shirt off serves no useful relevance to the thread topic - with possible exception of feeding your ego.
( and the only reason I took them was to track my progress 'cause before that I was about 20 pounds over weight).
Perhaps, but those pics of you with your shirt off are still irrelevant to your current dilemma pertaining to the fit of your suit.
