Hey,
i'm a real newb when it comes to suits. But I just bought a Hugo Boss suit and had to have a bunch of alterations done. They needed to take about 2 inches from the back and did something to the sides to make it a slimmer fit. Do these alterations defeat the purpose of having a Hugo Boss suit? What I'm trying to ask is, what are the pros of having a hugo boss suit besides the name? I know the cut is suppose to be good, but is this changed with the alterations?
Also, how much does it typically cost to have alterations like mine done?
Thanks all

Pretty much paying for the name, the fabric and the style of the suit.

Yes, alternations will change the cut somewhat, but there's also other styling cues that won't or may not be affected. IE. type of shoulders, the shape of the shoulders, hi/low gorge, width of lapel, slimness of the sleeves, button stance, length of the suit, etc.

I look at it like this The off-the-rack suit is cut for the designers ideal man :D. If some designer cuts a suit to not fit your body, and you still want the suit, its easier to change it than your body. The altered suit is how the designer wants that suit to fit on your different shape.

I have big upper arms so to fit my shoulders I'll need to buy a chest size that is one size too big for me. They will then take in a total of 1-2 inches in the back and side seams. Also suits are made with extra material in the seams, They can be let out if you forget to workout for say 5 years.

I don't know how much it costs since I've usually shopped at full service (full price too ) , men's stores who provide free alterations for the life of the garment (I got my value by getting fat and then getting skinny again  ). I remember having something done for 50 bucks once I think it was just the back seam and sleeve length, so depending on how much needs to be done maybe more than that.

As with all designer stuff, its entirely what you're willing to pay for it. Boss designs are okay, modern but not too radical as to go out of style in 3 months. The Boss suits are produced in Romania and constructed like cheaper brands. The inner layer is fused/glued not sewn by hand which suit snobs seem to hate.

What's really important is that you buy something that fits, looks good on you, costs an amount reasonable for you.
