Hi,

I walked around Marketmall in Calgary and saw some peacoats at Tommy Hilfiger that I thought looked really nice on me. But they were somewhat expensive, about $300 to $400. I also saw one at the Bay, but it was also about $400. There are also some Navy ones on eBay for much cheaper, but its hard to judge how thick and warm it will be.

I have never had a peacoat before, so I was just wondering how warm are they? Is it good down to -40C, or will I need to wear alot underneath it to keep warm? I am have a thick down jacket, so I am wondering how a peacoat would compare to that. Also, if you guys could suggest some other stores to look around, that would be great. I didnt find many other stores carrying peacoats...maybe it is too early in the season?

Story of my life, I bought one for $8 in Syracuse at a store called Steve and Harveys. Wonder how it'll turn out after a wash!

personally, i don't wear a peacoat when it's -20 and below because i hate having to put on more layers and feeling like the michelin mascot :o

Given the nature of the coat, it is more suitable for the 'working' crowd (e.g non-student). For them, they basically go from the underground parking lot to their office, and then walk for a few minutes to go out for lunch. For students taking public transit and walking frequently to get to classes, it doesn't make sense.

really depends on your tolerance level. I'm not afraid of cold, so peacoats all winter long in toronto is fine for me.

PS. I'm a student.

To the OP, I'm also in Calgary and looking for a decent peacoat for this winter. I'm gonna give BR a try and will probably take a look inside Harry Rosen and Holt Renfrew (will be super expensive probably).

Let me know if you find anything.

Which malls have you looked? Ive only been to Marketmall so far, and have not found much selection. It seems that maybe it is too early right now.

What's your price range? It's not officially winter time yet so there might be sales for winter coats soon.

I dont know how cheap you are looking at, but Joe.ca (Loblaws clothing line) has a pea coat at $89. I can't vouch on how warm it will be though.

Why did you buy it in the first place?

I bought one from AE and to my surprise, it's thin like a damn shirt. It's probably just on the threshold of warmth in fall. I also have one from Gap from years past and it too isn't very warm. You'll need winter grade peacoats that are made of wool or synthetics. I'm looking at the one from jcrew.com but it's like $200 plus they never have any sales.

Are you sure these were pea coats you were looking at? They're more Spring/Fall coats and personally I find them only warm enough for the -5*C to 12*C range. They're also generally $100-250 just depending on the store.

The Zara wool/dress coats have too much detail and fit way too slim, they make you look like a extra from The Matrix.

They also went for small to none collars on many jackets this year, which IMO is not a manly style.

I'm all for a more fitted look, however the north american market seems to have them fit a little bigger than I'd like. Any suggestions on where to find a better fit and not be too expensive i.e. +150 etc... :) I find that the more expensive ones fit much better!
