In fact, choice for my friend.
Toshiba Satellite 17.1" Laptop featuring AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor QL-60 (L350-01G) - Bilingual (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10108168&catid=25254&PCName=laptop_toshiba&logon=&langid=EN)
Compaq 17.0" Laptop featuring Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor T2390 (A948CA) (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10107703&catid=25254&logon=&langid=EN)
Seem Compaq one is cheaper, but config better, what do you think?

If the price difference is not much I would go for the Toshiba, cpu is slightly faster, video card is slightly better, comes with a firewire port if you ever need it, does not have tv out unlike the compaq but it depends if you really need that or not.
Its also less weight if you plan on taking it around to school or wherever.
But keep it mind its generally a lower end laptop, depending on what you want to do with it, it might be good or you might want something a little better.

Fixed. The X3100 is strong enough to render Solitare, on a good day. The HD3100 can actually be gamed on - but you might want a second stick of RAM to get dual-channel memory for that.
The bigger issue here is - look at the Toshiba's keyboard. Can your friend live with a gimped left Shift key?

Besides the keyboard issue, consider the laptop's use. The Toshiba has a nice videocard, but the compaq has 1 hour more of battery life.

Oh god, the irony. The delicious, savoury irony.
