View Full Version : [Merged] Rogers Cap 60gb > 25gb

euphoria24

Just received a mail from Rogers telling me that my cap will go from 60 GB a month to 25 GB a month..

Now that is ridiculous especially when they have always throttled my area
Will calling them do any good to make it 60 GB?

Rogers getting weak IMO:evil:

which package do you have with them? I can't possibly see them putting their normal package anywhere near 25 gigs. Possibly their lite, but even that is a little sad

edit: also are you sure it wasn't just a letter saying that you can purchase an extra 25gigs of cap space?

euphoria24
Sep 11th, 2008, 09:12 PM
i am currently with the Express section

I am sure they would not advertise purchasing 25GB

Are you sure the 25GB isn't just the limit for their surcharge? Beyond your 60GB you are charged $1.25 ( I beleive) for every additional 1GB up to $25 surcharge. So you're paying a maximum of $60+$25 for unlimited.

Can you scan or screenshot the mail? I don't know if you're referring to an email or snail mail.

I will type it out for all since i do not have a scanner

Rogers Hi-speed Internet Express brings you more great savings.

Rogers hi speed express is a fast service thats great for email, photo, and file sharing. Web surfing and steaming video for popular sites like Youtube. Youll be able to:

-Downlaod at up to 7mbps and get up to 25GB USAGE PER MONTH
-Enjoy unlimited photo sharing with Flickr pro (a $24.95 value)
-enjoy norton antivirus and norton personal firewall (a $104.95 value) at no extra charge
-get wireless home networking for $1.50 per month and go online for any room in the house without having to wait for other members to get off the internet

Regularly $47.95 per month, Rogers hi speed express is now available for $42.95 per month (plus other fees) for your first 12 months -- a savings of 60$

-- now i think they made the prices lower since they made the cap space lower?

It must have been a mixup. There is no way Rogers can expect to keep customers if they set their express limit to 25gigs. 100 gigs seems almost reasonable, but 25 is just stupid.

The average user probably uses less than 2 GB (If that much) per month.

But these rediculously low limits for the above-average definitely defeats the purpose of having high speed internet.

providing that it is 1 person using the internet per household...how exactly does 1 family use less than 25gb a month. that is ridiculous of rogers yet somehow unsurprising.

Rogers has a trick up their sleeve for these tests. Essentially they have this "throttling" thing which ups your service for a short burst, you will never get near averaged out 1MB/s on any server realistically over a download.

That's not true at all. I can download for hours on end at 1.1 - 1.2MB/sec with giganews.

I wouldn't be surprised if the literature was supposed to say 250GB... which is in-line with what Comcast is doing down in the states. They're implementing 250GB caps, which is fairly reasonable (for most of us) as far as caps are concerned.

I would be very surprised.

Ditto. Nobody in Canada offers anything close to 250gb. They are not competing with Comcast.

However 25 GB is just plain ridiculous. You can go through that in like 8 hours of downloading; spread over a month that's like 16 minutes of downloading a day. Rogers is just setting one bad example after the other in the world of Canadian broadband ISPs. I hope other ISPs (more specifically Shaw) don't follow suit

To OP. It would help us a great deal to digest this news if we can have an actual scan of the letter. If it is proven to be true, this is quite unbelievable, as it is going to be a significant degrade in Roger's service (58.3% drop). I hope Roger's is ready for a sudden shrink in their customer base.

Thanks OP for the pictures. Looks like we will all be getting this letter soon. But this letter doesn't rule out the typo scenario though. Otherwise, it looks to me people who decide to stick with Roger's as ISP would soon be paying $25 extra per month very soon. :(

That looks like the generic crap spam-mail they send out all the time. That and it says "Dear Resident", any time I have ever received anything from Rogers that pertains to my actual account it always has my name and account number on it. That and the 12 month discount/contract only applies to new customers, not existing ones.

If it is the regular spam-mail then it is just as Evil Baby said, a typo.

Wow, 25GB

60GB is plenty low. I've just gotten used to limiting the amount of stuff I download per month just to make sure I don't go over.

It's doable to stay below 60GB...and by "doable" I mean 59GB/month of usage as of the last day of my billing cycle.

I stayed with Rogers because they offered me a $5.00 recurring credit for the next 12 months if I switch to express and stay with them (works out to about 40 after tax or so). Frankly, with a 25GB cap, there is absolutely NOTHING they can do to keep me as a customer.

Only reason why I didn't go with Teksavvy already is because service in my area is limited to 3MBPS. I'll gladly take the 50% cut in speed if it means I can actually use my internet.

I haven't received a letter yet, but the second I do, I'm calling Teksavvy to sign up for their service

Not every internet user goes on Youtube (or other similar sites) or user p2p... The vast majority go check their regular websites (news, work e-mails, facebook and etc...) and that's pretty much it and manage to stay under 2-3 GBs/month.

I personally use about on average month 50-60 GB, some months I've gone over 2-300 GBs woth of download.. But like me, many of us on RFD are the exception and not the norm.

It's the same crowd on hofo who think unlimited data is needed by EVERYBODY. Not everybody uses vast amounts of data. I have a blackberry and I use about 30 MB of data monthly and most BUSINESS users use less than 5 MB (for business purposes) monthly.

It's the RFD, HoFo and DSLReports crowd that consume the most amount of data both on our wireless and internet... Not the average Joes who do not frequent these websites (there are millions of those).

I'm not saying they're (Rogers) is right. I'm just saying most people won't care or notice...

So it's been all but confirmed that they're decreasing the cap again? What are they thinking? Sigh. 95GB on Extreme and here I am thinking it will be enough.

I just checked my invoice for this month and I'm not too pleased. I was paying $54 or so before they implement the damn cap. My bill for this month is $76.91!

After reading the thread about the cap here, I got nervous and called Rogers.
I told the CSR that there letters floating around that say of a 25 gig cap for high speed express. She even said it would not make any sense to lower the cap to internet lite's 25 gig cap. I reminded her that there are letters saying that express will be capped at 25gig, she asked me to hold so she could ask the shift manager. She got back on the phone and said the manager insisted that there is no 25gig cap on express. BUT she said the manager said that the letters are badly worded and what they should say in clearer wording is "you will be charged an extra $1 for every gig you go over up to 25gigs". If you want proof just call them yourself.

PS Ted rogers is still a DOUCHE.
