Hey guys,
I have a HP Pavillion dv6000 its a 2 year old laptop and its out of warranty, yesterday I spent the whole day doing a format using the recovery CD. The reason why I spent the whole day instead of 2hrs is that I ran into a major problem after the recovery process has finished. So after the recovery process has finished it turns the laptop off automatically, so I turn it back on the HP logo pops up and 2 seconds later a error pops up "File Setupreg.HIV could not load, error code 14" does anyone know how to fix this? I've called HP tech support and they couldn't help, they didn't even know what the problem was. I've googled it and nothing came up. I tried doing the recovery process 2 times and both times it gave me that error.

I've done plenty of recovery formats on various types of laptops and this is the only one that gave me the most trouble.

If anyone can help me with this problem I will greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I'd make sure the recovery CD's are in good condition. A small scratch or fingerprint could prevent some essentials files from being copied over.

I know the actual Windows XP setup would alert you if it found a missing file. The file you mentioned is an essential system registry file, and is probably required for boot up.

1. Borrow a legit CD/DVD of XP (at least SP2) or Vista (whatever was on the laptop when you bought it)

2. Go to HP website from a different computer and get the drivers for your laptop (just incase), put on a cd or flash drive.

3. Install fresh OS on your computer. Use your "key" on a sticker on the bottom of your lappy.

4. Install any/all drivers needed.

Now you have a fresh install no HP bloat. Now if you want to make this process very quick in the future you will want to "image" your drive.

5. Search for "drive image (free)" in google or buy a copy of Norton Ghost (what I use) image of your drive.

6. If you use a Dual Layer DVD you can usually fit a fresh install + office + other apps on one DVD.

Now you will have a much faster and cleaner re-install tool.

These are by no means complete instructions, just a quick guide.

Good Luck

Looks like there are a ton of things that you can try according to, http://www.google.com/search?q=%22File+Setupreg.HIV+could+not+load%2C+er ror+code+14%22&ie=UTF-8.

There has to be a solution in here somewhere.

Thanks for the tip edifonzo, but problem... I don't know anyone that has a Windows XP Media which this laptop came with. Another problem that arised is after the completion of the recovery or format process it's supposed to auto restart but instead of restarting it just shuts down.... I've talked to some people and they said it might be the harddrive that is the problem..

Doesn't have to be the exact same as the one that came with your laptop. You can, of course, err... "obtain" XP media with SP3 slipstreamed.
