I have an acrylic case with 80mm fan openings. I recently bought a 120 to 80mm fan adapter with the idea of moving more air out of my case. I know the ideal thing to do would be to make a bigger case hole, but I don't want to potentially damage my case. Anyway, I have the fan adpter installed and a 120mm Antec fan blowing air out. It works ok, but makes an annoying whiney noise, which I guess is the result of the extra pressure. Is there some kind of modification I can do to either the fan or fan adapter so it can handle the pressure an not make this noise? Or are there fans that are built to handle extra pressure?

I can't answer your question about the 120 mm fans but i would think that trying to blow 120mm through an 80mm hole is prob less efficient than the 80mm in the first place. I could be wrong though. Are there not better 80mm fans you could try if you dont want to make the hole in your case bigger ?
