tplink 8810 $30 (noob friendly)
tplink 8816 $25 (recommended)
thomson 516 $50 (advanced recommended)

Seems like there's a pretty large price range... what's the difference between them? If they all get the job done reliably, why pay double?

I was wondering the same thing. Are the TP-Link modems any good?

You can get the Thomson 516 for $51.14 at Buy.com Canada including shipping. I'm not sure what shipping costs are for the TP-Link modems, but free shipping makes the Thomson a little more attractive.

i have the TP-link 8810 right now for Teksavvy internet, it works perfectly fine for me, right now it costs about 25-30, when i bought it like 7 months ago, it was $50. I find this modem connects faster than my Bell's Speedstream 4200 and 5200 (that is if you turn it on and off all the time)

both are good modems.
however the tplinks perform just as well as the 516s at half the price.
i own 2 of both. i can say i highly reccomend the tplinks. very easy to setup and use.

got the speedtouch 516 and I like it. but remember to do the mlppp trick you'll need to put the modem in bridge mode and then, you can't access the modem gui anymore. So they all will be about the same. If I were you, I would get the cheapest I find.

I've used the $20 2Wire modem for a while and it worked just as well as my Speedstream 5260 that I've had for years.

I bought a TP-Link TD-8810. It was super easy to set up with my wireless router and with a new Teksavvy account. It's been working fine for a few days now. I can't notice any difference in performance compared to my previous SS 5200 modem from Bell.

I got a SpeedTouch 516 earlier this week to replace my Speedstream 4200. The 516 is deadly to setup. I have no idea what all those options are. Thank god TekSavvy has some limited info on this.

There has been no improvement over the 4200 and I daresay the SpeedTouch 516 is all hot air under pressure. Lots of talk, but no more walk than a $25 modem.

Teksavvy does have instructions on their website on how to set up the 516-

That shouldn't come as any surprise, since it either works or it doesn't. It's not as if there are speed differences between different modems. Teksavvy is only a 5 Mbit connection, and any modem made in the past 5-10 years can handle that speed.

I have followed these instructions to configure my ST 516 even if i'm not with teksavvy.

The 8816 has too many settings but no explanation on what each one does. Yeah I checked the manual that came with the cd but it's too vague.

Anyone have a setup guide for this modem?
