OpenOffice Writer: technical Q

Hey guys
I copied and pasted text but it shows up as huge gaps between each line of text.
If you try to delete the gap, it collapses and doesn't allow you to have 2 separate lines.

Any ideas?
I tried the Paragraph tab and no luck

when weird stuff happens with the formating I paste into notepad and then recopy and repaste.

It'll strip it down to just the ascii text.
