my Linksys wrt54g just died on me (unable to get the IP address from the modem) so im looking to buy a new router.
i havent kept in touch with router technology so im wondering which router would be good nowadays? i want it to be able to handle Bitorrent levels of connections (like...the wrt54g would freeze everytime i used bittorrent downloading which used a lot of connections. problem went away after i installed dd-wrt firmware).
54G speed is good enough for me and under $80 would be ideal.
are there any good deals on routers right now?

WRT54GL and put DD-WRT or Tomato on there. Don't get the regular WRT54G (v5 v6 v7 v8) as they don't have enough memory for the full DD-WRT. Only the GL version is good these days. I wouldn't go N just yet, wait till they finish the actual N standard, then buy an N router.

WRT54GL is the RFD 'standard' :)

I'd get a WRT350N or 600N and put DD-Wrt on it... throughput speed just blows WRT54G away...

I've got a WRT54GL wich I got to replace my still working WRT54G v6. I prefer my GL over my G. It has a lot more memory so you can install any version of dd-wrt.
DC has the WRT54GL for $52.88 right now. (http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11030NW9977&vpn=WRT54GL&manufacture=CISCO)

I bought the WRH54G at Best Buy last week for approx $32. Works great with DD-WRT.

I have a WRT54G running Tomato (I think it's a V3... it is an earlier version).
I find that even with the custom firmware and a tweak to release connections after 20 minutes (instead of holding them for a day) - my router can still get bogged down if I run too many torrents (3 seems to be the max).
Is the WRT54GL better for torrents (will it handle more connections before getting overwhelmed?).
I also have the Linksys 160N and haven't tried it yet. Does anyone know if it is better at handling torrents?
Any suggestions in general for a router than can handle the massive number of connections torrents use?
Thanks.

Thats quite odd. My old wrt54gs v5.1 (w/ dd-wrt micro) ran more than 10 torrents, including 3 other computers surfing. And it was a v5.1 router. My new wrt54gl with tomato is simply amazing with torrents. I can actually be downloading now, and not hear complaints about surfing lag.
Try updating the Tomato firmware, and increasing the max IP connections in the router settings. Also check the connection settings in Utorrent.
