View Full Version : Winter Fashion Jacket

I was thinking about this last night..How do you guys dress fashionable during the winter? You're pretty much covered up by wearing a jacket, so it has to play a crucial role in winter fashion. But the thing is I rarely see someone wear a jacket that stands out, its always the same: black, blue, while etc.
SO I am looking for a jacket for this winter, and need to know where I can find fashionable jackets? My friend says I dress trendy (night club kinda style - nice dress shirt and jeans).
Any ideas on where I can get a nice jacket that stands out as well from the crowd?
Thanks :)
EDIT EDIT::: http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat380145&productId=2101_9124
What do you guys think about this AE jacket? I am assuming it can handle -20 degree weather since it is in the outwear section at AE. Am I right?

I'd suggest Danier, unless you don't like leather. They have some great looking jackets in some really cool colors (I personally love colored leather) and their quality is really great.

EDIT: I was leaning more towards a jacket with stripes (the ones that sorta look like shirts, not sure if you guys know what I am talking about)
can you post a pic of what you are referring to??

For men, I say wool/pea-coats are in. I find those warm enough for me, definitely stylish depending on your look. Columbia/North Face/Ski Jackets are also an option, but it's definitely boring, in my opinion.
what do you mean are in? they are classics. people are still going to wear them no matter what. the only thing different now is color and the style

They are so bulky looking, people wearing white ones look like snowmen.
However, they are nice when its cold. Function over Fashion aat times I guess.
I don't know what jacket I want for this winter yet.
I like this one for now http://tinyurl.com/5nfon7
To the OP, tell us what type of jacket or search google hard to find a picture lol.

I typically have 2 coats in the winter.
#1:
It's very thick, very warm for when I know I'll be outdoors for awhile. (Walking downtown, taking photos outdoors in winter, need to blend in for my assasination assignments...)
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/2389/1194992914tpachelseaweblz3.jpg
#2:
For when I want to look stylish, limited time outdoors. Walking from car in parking lot to indoors for example. Also wear it to work as well. Or if I want to impress people/someone. I've gotten a lot of comments from people with this coat on how great it looks and where they can find it.

Yeah, I agree. Leather jackets have the whole 'cool'-factor associated with it. How much are they nowadays? I was at a store and they were going well above $350.
Danier always overprices their stuff. They do it so that they can have $200+ sales afterwards. Right now they are selling their new models for $350+ but you can get last year's stuff at $100-$150, which is much more reasonable. You can come in and see if you like any of the current on sale items, you can wait until the style you like gets discounted, or if you are a good negotiator, you can straight away ask for a discount because you know their tricks.
They obviously do not have a lot of fall/winter stuff on sale right now, but if you plan ahead you can get great deals at the end of the season. Most leather styles do not look dated even after several years so you don't really have to worry about it going out of fashion next year.

If you wear nicer fashionable jackets eg. LEather or wool peat coats... I find that wearing a long sleeve waffle undershirt does a great deal in keeping you warm. That + long johns will keep you well equiped for the winter!
^ bet that costed big bucks... but def worth it???
yeah... set me back $400 something. But it is very warm. I can wear a tshirt under it in -10 weather and not even be cold. Apparently its the only water resistant model... I believe it has either gortex or teflon coating... Not sure.

Peacoats are surely a "fainshonable" choice, but will surely make you look like an idiot if you wear it with something stupid, or it just isn't you.
I'm personally a fan of vests. You could try that out.

yao416 get your facts straight. Absurd is from new york and is gangster/street imo. Also, I don't know why you brought up North face and Canada Goose because Goodfoot basically stole that logo on the back of the varsity from Canada Goose. And I'm a long time Goodfoot shopper. So no hate towards them but Goodfoot clothing line isn't unique or original to begin with. Their first varsity release was decent but not for the 300-400 they were pushing it for. If you don't mind the snowman look go for any of the mentioned parkas - Canada Goose is the *****.
If you don't wanna look huge, get a nice peacoat or wool coat from H&M and wear a bunch of layers. Should be okay as long as you're not outside for like hours on end. Scarf/leather gloves help too if that's your thing.

Thanks :)

What do you guys think about this AE jacket? I am assuming it can handle -20 degree weather since it is in the outwear section at AE. Am I right?
Just got it in the mail a few days ago and it's not as thick as I had hoped. It will require some heavy layering to stay warm.
EDIT: I got this one without the hood.

bluenotes has one like this too:
http://www.blnts.com/_static/webUpload/731/86036121002_41_3.jpg
are they any good?
The one from AE is thin like a spring jacket, not even suitable for windy Fall weather I'm afraid.
I think it's more of a night jacket where you wear to dinner or similar functions. If you want a real peacoat, look at Gap or other places like that where you can feel the fabric because they usually carry two models; one for light weather and one for cold weather.

Thing about Canada Goose is that they are really warm; don't forget their popular use before they were pre-opted by us urbanites was for the arctic.
I used to use a wool jacket from BR during the winter, and I would layer it with a thick sweater when it got really cold.
Now with the Canada Goose, I don't bust it out until it's at least -5, and even then I don't need a sweater under it. So I still keep the wool for those warmer than -5 days.

Zara has some really nice 3/4 trench coats right now - check those out. The Eaton Centre store has a few left, not many. I went on Saturday.
I was about 85% tempted to spend close to $500 on another coat, but I already have 3! :( I was then reminded that money saved for vacation is more important than another coat...
But yeah, check it out. Coats like that lasts for years, you'll be happy you invested in one.
Wow, $500 on a Zara coat? That's getting into Harry Rosen/Holt Renfrew range.

Is it true that Canada goose is life time warranted? I've heard that the north face gotham jacket is alot warmer than the canada goose parka. True or false? isnt the gotham alot cheaper as well?

i have the campus coat, and its okay for about 10 degrees. Than you start getting cold, so i bought a hoodie to wear under and it works perfectly well, sheilding you from cold and looking good.

what kind of cold are you talking about? If your campus coat works well up to 10 degrees then adding on a hoodie would be good for 0 degrees.
But what happens when the temp is -15 to -20

What's a good reccomendation for a coat for a 17 year old that's not a snowboard coat or something. I wanted a trenchcoat but decided it would be a little much for me (not moneywise, just not suiting me so much). Does anyone know anybody who makes some decent coats with a fur (preferably faux) lined hood? Must be warm and suitable to -20.

17 year old? Jean machine or buffalo (the store) should have some puffy fur line coats for ya. But at this rate, seeing as you'll be graduating real soon fromn highschool and moving on, I suggest you find a nicer coat. You'll change a lot very soon, believe me.

I think looking at the picture the coat looks like its geared more towards a workplace kind of atmosphere. Possibly due to the dress pants and the shirt and tie. I'm not sure if it would look good with just a simple shirt and jeans.

That tristan coat is very sharp looking, but ya, maybe just a bit too much fashion for uni. At least here in waterloo, only the girls actually spend time on dressing properly (blanket statement, I know).
Does anybody know/remember this coat (not quite 3/4 length) that was very talked about last year, I think it was by Hugo Boss, at Holt Renfrew for about $500, I think it was tweed, very understated, most people would look good in it. I was reading about it on here if that's any help. thx!
(oh! Found it, Hugo Boss Cox carcoat. Still available and stylish a whole year later ;) )

Well, I found this Kenneth Cole NY 3/4 length at Stars, charcoal grey, 90% wool, $200, so I bought it!
I also found the mythical Gloverall duffel coat at the Bay, it had been rebadged (to the Bay's 'Signature' brand), but the square logo and everything (including the house tartan) was in place. Unfortunately, the way they are cut is that it has a kind of tent effect on me, but it does have a very nautical look. $695 ().
Very late edit: They are indeed made by Gloverall, confirmed on the Bay's website. It is hard to find sizes however, as they have a lot in their traditional "Queen Anne's" colours and few in actually fashionable ones.

Yeah, well I'd say -10 deg cels; is the threshold for that jacket. Assuming you have a sweater with a shirt beneath it. You definitely don't want to layer too much either, otherwise it'll look real hefty on you.

I only have 3 jackets, this peacoat, a winter coat and a rain coat. So I'll probably use this to wear casually since I dont have anything else for the fall season. This is my first pea coat but I see people wearing it casualy all the time.

http://www.bananarepublic.com/browse/product.do?cid=32658&pid=593782&scid=593782002
do you think this is warm enough for winteR?
you would need to wear a sweater inside....and it might still not be enouogh for -30 windchill.

Yeah that jacket kinda DOES kinda scream "gay cowboy sex in a tent".
Disagree, it's a very classic, timeless style.

They have some more stuff at http://www.tristanstyle.com/
I went into Tristan to check this coat out, and I'm not as impressed by it as I initially was when I saw this picture. It's still a nice coat, but after seeing about a 100 coats over the past week, it doesn't seem all that different then alot of ones out there (including my current coat).

... i just went to the sherway gardens location of Rudsak with my bf and he ended up buying a coat from there ... the coats for guyz are amazing and there was a sale going on with up to 40% on selected styles. average prices were from 300 - 690 ish.... they didnt have a great selection for the girls tho... :(.
Hope that helpz .

also : i saw a really nice jacket for 330 at Geox. It was a down filled hip length bubble jacket with a belt at the waist. I have never bought Geox clothing before? Any opinions on it?

I like the second one, but in your opinion, would anyone drop 150 for this, and do you think it would hold up for -10*C?
