For the unfamiliar, Dell Days of Deals (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=CAqD7bLWUPI&offerid=137979.631615211&type=10&subid=) are promotions where 3 new deals and 2 to 4 sidebar deals appear each day. The deals last for one day only and the really hot deals will sell out. New items appear each morning around 6AM eastern time.

It's a been a very strong Dell Days of Deals so far with some great deals and a bunch of sell outs. I've bought 2 of the 3 days so far, what could it be for Day 4?

Shipping will be free for all items.

Dell Days of Deals items now also appear on the RedFlagDeals.com Deals of the Day Page (http://www.redflagdeals.com/dailydeals/) for your convenience.

Good prices on all three of the featured items. The Harmony 880 has been $99.99 before during another Days of Deals and it's still about the lowest price we've seen it. The Asus PDA phone comes with GPS and wi-fi built in, a 2MP camera, FM tuner, and is a fully unlocked GSM phone, incredibly full featured for $250.

Z-5500 deal?

Ooooh, I forgot about that. Good one!

I guessed UPS & TV yesterday. Maybe UPS will show up today...and maybe $299 E-Books :)

Still have a 1500 APC in it's box that I got from 2 DOD ago. >:(

RFDers grab it first, ask questions later. I have a basement full of unopened products. Too bad gas prices are so high or we'd barter & trade more often around the city.

After a little bit of research ... the Asus PDA is a pass ... reviews said it's a very attractive package at first ... but it's slow, slow, slow - to the point where it will "frustrate even casual users".

However, it's priced well and it's unlocked. Maybe if you're super unpicky about performance and all you want is the Asus' well regarded GPS performance ...

*edit* this is 450 at expansys.ca by the way.

BTW, notice how the prices of LCD monitors have drop over the last 8 months. Last year the 20" monitor went for $279 and the 22" went for $299. You can get those for less than $200 today.

No, Harmony does not offer a BT remote.. they are currently all IR - if you want a device to convert IR to BT to use your Harmony with the PS3, you'll need to look for 3rd party products like IR2BT or IR4PS3, etc.. I recommend the latter, it works brilliant.

No, it doesn't have BT. So, you'll need one of those IR adaptor on your PS3 or simply buy the PS3 remote (which is what I have along with the Harmony 880).

This is a great deal. I bought one of these for my wife when it was priced at $399 a while back now. Great unit. I put the TomTom software on it, works great. My wife uses an app called Run.GPS to track her training (running/cycling) and that is really cool too. It is unlocked so it will work on any GSM provider (which eventually will be all of them here in Canada). No problems with BT or WiFi - all works. She can sync her Outlook and all that nonsense over WiFi at work, etc. I guess the one thing I can think of that is rather lame is the builtin speaker(s). It really should be louder - it can be difficult to hear the TomTom voice driving in the car. I had hoped that using an external BT speaker would be a great workaround but the TomTom software wouldn't use the BT for audio.

GSM - so Rogers, or prepaid resellers of Rogers like 7-11 and PetroCan.

This is a good price ... but my guess is that the crappy reviews this PDA has received have resulted in few sales. Not a single review on newegg. PCMag was critical of it, describing the interface as "incredibly buggy" and multi-tasking as like "swimming through goo".

I was interested in it too, but I think I will pass.

Re the Asus phone: it is a good deal. Just compare to the popular HP-510C on sale at Staples for $200. That model is also quad-band unlocked GSM phone with WM6, Wifi, bluetooth, microSD slot. For a bit more money this phone adds a bigger QVGA screen, GPS, FM radio, and includes a 2 Gbyte microSD card with GPS maps.

...but my guess is that the crappy reviews this PDA has received have resulted in few sales. Not a single review on newegg. PCMag was critical of it, describing the interface as "incredibly buggy" and multi-tasking as like "swimming through goo".

Windows Mobile 6 is the downside. It is crappy, on all the phones that use it.

[re: Asus phone] She can sync her Outlook and all that nonsense over WiFi at work, etc.

One example of crappy:

Windows Mobile 6 will sync over Wifi only to a corporate Exchange server, not to your desktop. That capability was *removed* by Microsoft. supposedly because they considered Wifi too insecure to allow you to make that decision for yourself, not because they were trying to promote integration with their corporate Exchange software or anything like that...

If you have any kind of video or audio setup with multiple bits of equipment and multiple connections, a Harmony remote is simply a must-have. This is a good price for one of the better models. I would be all over it too, except that with Harmony there's no real pressure to upgrade because all their models have the same basic capabilities.

The Asus phone is a phone first and PDS/GPS/etc. second. Given a price of $250 for an unlocked phone compared to the cost of other gsm cell phones (unlocked and no contract - apples to apples comparison), this is a spectacular deal. Yeah, it gets slow when you try to multitask on it, but who the heck runs 4 to 5 Windows programs on a tiny phone. What for?!

Finally, when you consider the fact that users on here are selling it for $300-350 on buy/sell/trade forum (doesn't even include car kit like this Dell Deal), then this is smoking hot. :cheesygri

I asked him is he could discounted another $8.60 since BB has it for $286 and after a while on the cash register he gave me an additional $10 off and used my GC so the total was $189.99 plus tax.

A total NOOB question. Can someone point me to how I would go about setting up the phone/pda? I need a PDA but don't want to be locked into a carrier for 3 years. I have a CDMA phone on Sasktel so I'm assuming it would be Rogers or Fido or this one. Much appreciated.

Agreed. If I was in the market for an unlocked phone and a GPS I would give this a whirl. But I already have an unlocked phone and a separate GPS. The risk of a crappy UI isn't worth the convenience of replacing multiple devices with one. Your "4-5 Windows programs" is a little optimistic. PCMag was talking 2. It also seems that with the GPS running it is impossible to run even 2. Plus, PCMag raised concerns over the reliability of the GPS software ...

I'll wait for the next gen of these all in ones ...

It's an unlocked GSM world phone. You just plug in a local SIM card for service anywhere in the world. Here in Canada it would Rogers or Fido or any of the other service resellers using the Rogers GSM network. If you travel to another country, pick up a local SIM card there and swap it for the Rogers one for cheap local service, then swap back when you return to Canada. That's why GSM is the defacto world standard.

I pulled the trigger on the ASUS P527 today early AM. I've been wanting this phone for a while because of all the features it has. Though I was in no way prepared to shell out 500+ dollars buying at regular price, it is very decent at half that amount.

The big deal with Harmony is the web programming interface and the activity-based model instead of a device-based model. You go to their web page, tell it what equipment you have (from a constantly-updated database of > 50,000 devices), tell it what activities you use it for (e.g. Watch TV, Watch DVD, Listen to Music), answer the connection questions (e.g., "What connection is the DVD player on?"), and it sets up everything for you so you can switch to any activity with one button press. It turns the right equipment on and off, switches the video and audio connections for you, changes channels if necessary, mutes one audio output and enables another if necessary etc etc. People even program them to dim the room lights and such...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that there were some Harmony's additionally geared towards PVRs than others. I might be wrong though.

I use my 880 to control my HD PVR (AS 8300HD) from Rogers. All of the relevent functions work (list, guide A,B,C) except for the settings button which can be 'learned' if I was not so lazy. There are generic buttons that work for info, channel, volume, page, etc.

The 880 has been great for me as I have a PC, HD-DVD, CBT, and a Wii on my TV with a receiver handling the audio. It it great for my 9 year old and my wife through the activities who do not have to remember which inputs to set. One button and all of the power and input requirements are set!

This remote also works well for Vista and XP Media center if you have an IR transmitter. All of the usual MCE remote buttons are in the database.

Just pulled the trigger on the Harmony 880 as well. Been looking at it for quite a while and couldn't pass it up.

Does anyone know its compatibility with FTA receivers? Considering these arn't always made by big brand companies, I was wondering if the harmony will work with it or if anyone has experience with it in the past.

If it's controlled by IR, any Harmony remote will work with it.

I have the 880, and while the price is great, I personally find the button layouts to be poor and squished together.

still, it beats having to fiddle with 5 different remotes....

Surprised no one is mentioning the Asus phone deal. I tis a pretty good deal for $249 IMO

- Unlocked
- Quad Band
- WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
- GPS - INCLUDING SOFTWARE AND MAPS (most gPS enabled phones like the Touch don't come with GPS turn-by-turn software, you have to buy it or pirate it)
- FM Radio
- 1300MAH battery ( very good life! )
- Windows Mobile 6.0
- Metal casing
- Made by Asus so you know it is good quality

If you have the remote of the receiver, the Harmony can learn the IR code directly from the remote (in the event that the IR code isn't already in their extensive online database).

ASharp
Sep 5th, 2008, 12:33 PM
If it uses IR, the Harmony can do it. It has its own IR sensor on the bottom that allows you to program your current remotes' functions even if your device isn't in the database. It's an amazing little remote!

Edit: Wow, was a little late there. =X

Also...
How does Dell ship again? Need to know which address to send it to.
In my experience, Dell only uses Purolator to ship.

is very tempting...

Note that it has only a 200MHz CPU, 64MB RAM and 128MB ROM. With this configuration, I wouldn't expect it to be very capable of multi-tasking or very fast.

Nonetheless, it is a hot hot price for a starter PDA phone.

A total NOOB question. Can someone point me to how I would go about setting up the phone/pda? I need a PDA but don't want to be locked into a carrier for 3 years. I have a CDMA phone on Sasktel so I'm assuming it would be Rogers or Fido or this one. Much appreciated.

Prof, as mentioned by other RFDers, this phone is for GSM only. If you are currently in a plan with Sasktel and they are using CDMA technology, then this phone will not work for you as you can't use GSM on a CDMA network unless you cancel your Sasktel and migrate over to Rogers or Fido or other GSM providers.

I guess I ordered it just in time, woohoo! I noticed that by adding more than 1, they deducted only $50 off instead of $80 for the first one. Dell probably figures that even at $130 people will still buy it anyway given that it sells for $168 at Costco.

I saw it at the same price from Dell just before Xmas last year but could not justify $100 for a remote. This time I just bit the bullet and got one that I will actually use instead of buying other useless stuff because of RFD

I find that it was easier in the past, I tried to PM them today and got the runaround, I went to two different BB's and they both gave me different reasons as to why they can't (complete BS IMO but didn't want to argue for 10 bucks). Anyways, it's YMMV.

I have used my 550 and now my 880 with the Viewsat's... the beauty is, as people said, when you punch in what FTA you are using, or whatever equipment, it pulls up all the main features and assigns the keys in a somewhat logical order, you can tweek it, and the nice thing is, with this, you have 8 buttons for extra functions, as opposed to 4.

I have the Harmony One also which I got as a replacement for the 880 and use the 880 in the bedroom. One issue with the ONE is that it's sluggish. I find it slower to respond compared to the 880 and also, the IR Cone is not as good as the 880. You really have to keep the ONE pointed at the device you are using. Never had issues with the 880.

Yep, touchscreen, like most any pda.

You're still going to need a microSD card, just not the one they were offering with whatever software and maps on it. TT Navigator 6 and a Canada/Alaska map consumes well over a Gig by themselves - get yourself a decent sized one so that you've got space for other stuff too like some tunes. :-)

I'm not entirely sure... I guess since NA maps were included people assume there must be some software to make use of them, which seems logical enough. When I got mine back before Christmas time I'm fairly certain it was just a blank 2G card... I don't recall making a backup of the stuff on it and I would not have simply deleted without doing so in order to make space for TT Navigator and maps. That's why I questioned whether the description was correct in the first place.

Anyways, the point is, that the description for those of us that ordered early, said it would come with maps. I should actually give Asus a call, because in some places the card is a requirement as part of the bundle based on the reviews I have read.

For those that already got the phone, did it even come with the car kit (holder, goose neck, and charger)? Because that was also part of the description.

Yes, very frustrated since received a phone with GPS capability, but no GPS software and no maps on microSD. The microSD is empty. Noticed that Dell changed the description of the phone in the afternoon. In the morning when I ordered said GPS software included. In the afternoon, said GPS software not included. Received my unit the day before yesterday and it's a good unit based on my 2-day use. However, there is no gps application and NA map with the package but only a blank MicroSD card.

I emailed dell and here is their reply:

Thank you for contacting Dell.

I understand that you have e-mailed in as you did not receive the NA map with the order 234119428.

As per the records I see that NA map is just mentioned as the description of the product but is not included with the order, if you wish to place an order for the NA map, you may contact our sales department on 1-866-489-3355, so that they would be able to assist you further for placing an order for the NA map.

If you still have any questions or issues, please do not hesitate to e-mail me back and I will be more than happy to assist you.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Respectfully,

...

We Care for Customers: http://support.dell.ca

I am gonna reply above email as this:

This is ridiculous — The description of the item in the order confirmation is about the what the complete package of this item is and bonded contract between dell as the retailer and me as the consumer. If what is in the item description is not included in the package delivered to me then the item not delivered is considered as missing and the order is not complete. This has totally nothing to do about placing another order.

I insist that I must receive everything in the item description, which is also confirmed by your order confirmation. If you can not resolve this issue please forward this email to your upper management.

I have been a long time customer of dell.ca and placed numerous orders — all of the order, before this one, are up to my complete satisfaction. I do hope Dell can honor what it described/advertised publicly and the contract between the customer and itself, so that I can keep my trust and confidence to Dell.ca.

Let's what will happens next ...

Well, an update from me with respect to the maps.
I almost returned my unit for refund but gave Dell another chance and called yesterday. The rep I got (actually sounded like they were in North American this time) passed me onto the Resolutions dept who looked at it and then ordered me a new one. He's saying that it's just a re-order of what my original order was and can't say for 100% certain that it does include the maps or not. Guess we'll see what happens.

BTW, the unit is out of stock but should ship in about a week. Probably more stock from ASUS on the way. I hope it comes that way. If anyone knows of how to order the Maps from ASUS Directly that would help so if necessary we can all contact ASUS for it.

Anyone who purchased the phone notice when you go and look on the order page now, the Sub-Total is $249.99, Shipping is $0, and Tax is $20, yet the Total Price is $282.49? What's up with that - I know $282.49 is the correct price in Ontario with 13% tax, but I'm sorry, that's not right - if you show me $20 tax, then that's what you charge.

Well, no offense, but I don't see the point of contacting Asus instead of Dell. It's dell's saying what's included in this package. If something is missing it's dell's responsibility to make it right. Asus has no idea what dell was selling and actually there are two packages of this P527 phone, one with maps and one without maps, and the price difference is about 100 bucks. If you let Dell go away and contact Asus, what if they say OK pay me 100 buck for the map?

At least for those put through the orders before dell changed the item description on its website (and has the order confirmation email saying the item is " P527 PDA GPS Phone With 2GB miniSD North American Maps - Unlocked", they are entitled to get the maps from Dell.

My thoughts exactly. It's bad enough that they ship a product not as described. But you know what is worse, is that they modify the descriptions in your order page after the fact. That's like going back on a signed contract, doing a white-out and then filling it with something else. Seriously, what is up with that. Dell has just become so pathetic.

I mean quite frankly, the GPS software probably wouldn't be as good as say TomTom, which you could acquire through various ways :cheesygri . But it's more about the principle - we should get what we paid for - and that is, a P527 GPS Phone WITH North American maps.

They did not mention the map at all, although I have asked. Because I read from the mannual that they should include a microSD card and navigation CD otherwise they ask you contact the seller for the missings.

Thank you for contacting Dell.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to you.

I request you contact our online sales at 1-800-387-5752 ext 8056 and confirm with them if you are supposed to receive the navigation CD. If they confirm you should receive navigation CD what I can do I can go ahead and process a refund as we will not be able to navigation CD separately.

I decided I would return the phone for a full refund because of the whole maps issue. I can't waste any more of my time. Besides, I personally find the phone is a tad sluggish. Perhaps the P750 with the faster processor is more suitable for me. Plus my particular one could not connect to my DLink router - yet had no problems connecting to wireless in say a Starbucks. I won't even offer to sell it at what I paid, as I need to stick it to Dell. What a disappointing experience.

Also, just to add, the customer service rep originally offered for a UPS guy to come tomorrow to pick it up during "business hours". In UPS standards that doesn't mean anything - I don't want to be waiting at home all day. In any case, if you're planning to return, ask them to just send you a packing slip so that you can drop it off at UPS at your convenience. And ensure you're getting a full refund - none of the 15% restocking mumbo jumbo.

Anyways, good luck to everyone else who is going to keep at it.

I had e-mailed my sales guy (I had ordered mine by phone) but got no reply. I think that Dell dropped the ball big time on this GPS software+maps thing. That being said, I've managed to install TT6 with maps first, then, with a slight hint from GunnerX (thanks again :D), installed TT7 with maps yesterday. Everything works great.

I can understand people who decide to return it, but for the P527's features, and for what we paid for it, IMO it's a great deal and a keeper. For the GPS thingy, again, with very little fiddling you can have it working 100% without Dell's software and maps.

Good luck.

AAARGH. Stupid POS Vista.
Windows Mobile Device Center AND the Asus upgrade software both crashed during the FW process.

Phone is now stuck on "IPL: Insert USB CABLE" and now I'm stuck.

Sigh. Expert mode time.

UPDATE: Sweet expert mode worked :). I suggest forgoing Activesync/Windows Mobile DC and just do expert mode. Now to install TT7.
I never got the 2GB microSD card in mine. Oh well, I got a cheapie off NCIX ages ago for $9 which I dumped in there. The Wifi on this sucks. I might return it if I can't use it reliably at work next week.

Grr. 5 minutes in, the phone crashed twice on me so far on FW 6.1. Not good. My previous Windows ce/mobile experience was like this and this brings back a ton of foreboding :(

It doesn't have a miniSD slot, only microSD. I installed iGo on it since TomTom felt slow and it works pretty well. I have no complaints about the GPS part of it.

After a weekend of using this, I am under the distinct impression they designed this to be GPS first, phone second and PPC third. It feels a bit slow in all aspects other than GPS. I have noticed a little improvement with the 6.1 upgrade speed wise but nothing too exciting. Still debating on whether to return this or not as it is an ideal form factor for me and the GPS function is working quite well.

I understand that. My point was that people were only talking about one mistake in the description rather than both of them. If Dell was to honour the inclusion of the maps, then they should honour the rest of the description by requesting a return of the microSD card to be replaced by a miniSD one. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I got an email from the CSR that it is backordered until Sept 26.
It does seem a tad slow, but once you understand and wait for a moment it's fine. The reason the wifi is dropping is that on power-save it disconnects your connection. When you turn it back on, it comes back but if you wait it does take a long time to reestablish. I think what it's doing is searching through my other wifi connections before going to the one I was last on. I found it faster to hit wireless manager, turn off, turn on and all is fine.
I found it stays on when plugged in if I do not have it set to turn off when on external power. Did that and my wifi has been on constantly.

I am finding that it's a pretty decent phone, but sound quality is not its strongest suit. The GPS has worked fairly well so far.

Considering I just bundled 3 or 4 devices I was using into this one it's quite awesome. I even had a voip connection running on it for a while so I could use voip when on wifi and my GSM when it was off.

I know I'm still debating on whether to keep it or not. Amazing GPS for it's size, good enough phone and it has a better phone reception than my current Sony Errickson phone. I can live with the slowness but I don't know if my phone is defective or not but it can't seem to detect wifi networks unless I'm damn close to the router. Pisses me off and for that reason alone I might end up returning this.

I had that WiFi problem for a bit... try changing channels on your router. Could be interference?

Mine connects pretty quickly when I say "connect" to it ... at work I know I have one faulty access point but the others are fine as is my home router too. I had problems with my laptop like that too - changed the channel it broadcasts on and it was fine.

I installed TomTom 7.450(9028) today. It installs ok and maps work
However it does not see the internal GPS (GPS Receiver with SiRFstar III Chipset and internal antenna)

Is there a trick to this or do I need to send this back to Dell since I did not get the GPS software either. I only got it since it was suppose to have GPS Maps included.

I'd hate to have to buy an external GPS antenna to get this P527 to work

1- Turn ON your GPS using the application :TraveLog.
2- Configure your TomTom to detect your internal GPS by chosing the correct COM port. Mine was COM8, I assume everybody's P527 should be COM8.

That's it. It's confirmed by many members here to be working 100% with TomTom7.

The Maps can be opened manually via browse.

The GPS keeps saying NO GPS 0 Satellites
Travel Log is on and has GPS lock

These are the GPS default settings
There is both a hardware port set to COM8 4800baud
Program port set to COM6
Access is checked on to manage automatically

Also tried Garmin XT Mobile but it does not seem to have an internal GPS option tries to find external GPS via Bluetooth.

OK, again, follow this and let us know. It SHOULD work:

1- Run Travelog, turn your GPS ON.
2- Run TomTom, go to Preferences, GPS Status, Configure. You should have options to chose your GPS type, click the right arrow till you get to "Other bluetooth GPS receiver". Now it should give you a list of COM ports, chose COM8. If you chose "Internal GPS receiver" it will NOT work.

That should do it. I mean there is no other settings to fiddle with.

P.S. I'm interested to try the Garmin Mobile XT. Which one did you use, and how did you get it. Use PM if you want.

I know people are complaining about the low speeds of the p527.
I just wanted to let you folks know about Pocket Hackmaster. I ended up buying it since it allowed me to overclock the CPU. I'm running it at 234 Mhz stable (vs the 200 default) and it's definitely more responsive. I know overclocking freaks people out but this utility will only overclock if you go above a certain threshold (like say 70% CPU utilization). I liked it so much I paid $19 for the software as the free one is just a 30 day trial. If not for this software utility, I was ready to phone Dell to come pick it up.

Another tip I am living with is to disable all the wireless connections unless you need it. Each time it tries to connect/reconnect, your unit feels like it's frozen.

Disclaimer: use the software at your discretion. If your phone dies, not my fault.

Also, regarding my wifi issue. I re-did the 6.1 upgrade since no amount of soft/hard resets were helping and that resolved my issue. The antenna still sucks as it won't detect my work connections but at least I can get a stable connection at home one floor down.

Regarding GPS'es with TTS for WinMobile, I couldn't find any legal ones that offered them BUT some folks have hacked iGo8 (you'll need to reinstall if yours doesn't do it currently) and put it out.

GPS with TTS works on the iguidance 4.0 -- I have to install a program called gpsgate since iguidance doesn't officially support smartphone .

 I'm sure Dell is doing everything they can to get more in. Would you rather them sell whatever they had on hand? The complaints would then be "why put it on sale when they have like 2 available" and "Dell is just like Staples with their OOS products."

It's "legal action," although your problem may well be "illegitimate."

Finally got mine! Woohoo!

You guys should be getting yours very soon. Mine shipped on the 24th, received today.

The phone is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. phew. Almost as tall and wide as an iphone, and a tiny bit thicker.

Like a lot of other people I was considering returning the unit due to lack of maps. However, after wasting a lot of time on the internet there appears to be two viable and free solutions on the internet to get maps that work with the GPS.

1. Google maps, main problem is you need a regular Wi-fi connection or data plan

2. Google Navigator 4.2. I've only used it for a couple of days using maps function only and it seems to work quite well. You need to login once to get maps and then they stay on the PDA.

Would like to hear from others on how they get around the missing maps issue, and if anyone has been able to get the maps from Dell.

Ps. Above mentioned new thread has quite useful information

spoke to their "customer service" (I call BS) line, the rep was extremely rude and I was basically told that I was stupid for expecting it to arrive within a month of ordering it. Ordered the 5th of September, then they switched the model (went from the 51007 to the 51000 - no maps/card), now they are not expecting anything until the 25th of October.
Order has been cancelled, so someone will enjoy the one I was supposed to get (maybe before Christmas). I will order it from another retailer for $75-80 more (hey, ca.buy.com has them and I get aeroplan!) Dell will get no more of my business. EVER.

aeroplan.com/estore and go to buy.com, they are 325 (plus taxes) after the 7% discount.
