Got quote of Air Canada flight non-stop from Toronto to Beijing/Shanghai $1080 return on weekday or $1100 weekend (Fri, Sat and Sun). My friend got $1050 a couple days before, but this is the best price I got for today. Return must be within 3 months, and non-changeable or refundable. Must hold Canadian passport or have US visa.

This is the total amount. This price changes everyday and here is what I got: My 3 yr old cost $850, me and my husband $1100 each. We leave on Wednesday to Beijing, and back on weekend from Shanghai.

When are your exact days departing and returning ? I'm searching for flights at the end of October and getting $1,600 return based on departures and returns on weekdays.

This is the regular price for the low season. I got this fare a couple times last year and once for 800 all-in from Calgary.

Although it's a given, add $50 per person for single entry visas to China.

If it's non-stop flight, why does it require Canadian passport or US visa?

Well, this is a tricky one.
The return flight is from China via Toronto to a US city like Boston and there is a good chance that the airline void your ticket if you don't have a VISA to the States. This fare could be gone at anytime. The regular fare from Toronto to China round trip is around $1400 right now.

Well, then its not really non-stop, is it?

I don't see how your origin could be Toronto-China, but return ending in a different US city.

That means that the flight origin must also be in the US city, and would require one to go down there.

nope..it is non stop from toronto - china. i just issued such a ticket for toronto - hkg for $1016 including taxes.

flight origin is not a US city. but on the ticket your final destination must be. so ticket is yyz-hkg, hkg-yyz-JFK. if you do not have US Visa/Canadian citizenship, you may not be able to board the return flight since you do not have the ability to enter the US.

For what it's worth I paid more than $1300 non-stop (both ways) on air canada to Beijing from Toronto a couple of years ago in March. I thought that was a good deal at the time.

Correct!
There is one thing you need to pay attention. Thre return flight from China (at least Beijing) to Toronto may looks like a non-stop flight but in some weekdays, they do have stop in Vancouver even it's not show on the ticket. If this is the case, your luggages may have to go through the custom in Vancouver then re-checkin, there is a great chance that your bags will be ship to the States directly. So DO make sure that your return flight is a real non-stop flight!

Although it's a given, add $50 per person for single entry visas to China.

It is not necessarily a given. Chinese (mainland) nationals and those originally from HK or Macau with a "return home permit" do not require entry visas to China.

This is not necessarily true. It depends on whether the US bound flight is non-stop from YVR. If it is, then you are correct.

If it is (say) YVR-YYZ-LGA/EWR, then one would be required to clear customs in Toronto meaning that one would retrieve the luggage (and re-check in hypothetically) at YYZ.

Call the travel agent. Airlines are highly unlikely to offer a $1000 fare to go back to HK at peak travel season.

My wife bought 3 tickets from the same agency last week. Direct Toronto to Beijing and U.S. as the final destination on the return flight. Early December departure and early January return, at $1200 for adult and $900 for children.

Their downtown office quoted $50 cheaper but their Markham office refused to honor, where we went to pay. The boss was there and refused citing fare too low.

They had the lowest fare as well 3 years ago. The cheapest I have ever got is $900 for an adult back in 1997, on the Christmas day on Northwest Airline, Montreal to Beijing via Chicago or somewhere around Chicago.

Deal is dead. When I pick up ticket yesterday afternoon around 5:30pm, CSR told me it's no longer available at $1080 but around $1200. You can call TianBao travel to find out.
