I just booked a great New Years Eve getaway deal through www.cheapoair.com (a US based website)

Here are the details:

Depart - December 26, 2008 from YYZ (Toronto Pearson), departs at 4:35 pm
Return - January 2, 2009 from JFK (New York City), returns at 10:05 am

$148.26 USD per person including all taxes and service charges, and includes a $10 savings per person. This price also includes flight insurance/cancellation costs, which I elected to purchase since I booked in advance and my plans my change.

This is via LAN Airways on a Boeing 767 aircraft. You are allowed to check in two pieces of luggage at no cost. LAN is part of the 'One World' global alliance of air carriers.

This price beats Air Canada, Porter, WestJet -- even beats flying Jet Blue or Southwest from Buffalo.

I just typed in 15 OCT dept , 3 Nov return and it gave US $132 return taxes included. So i guess it works for other dates too.

Here's the link to the airline's offers from YYZ:

Holy smokes, thanks OP!

Does anyone know what LAN's change policy is? Doesn't say anything on the site re: fees, from what I can see, and I'd like to snap these up even though my travel dates are up in the air.

Never mind, found the answer!

* On or before flight departure day change is permitted with US$ 50 penalty.

* Refunds: Tickets are only refundable within the first 24 hrs. of purchase/After 24 hrs non-refundable.

It is a solid airline.

ok I bite, according to wik:
LAN Airlines S.A. NYSE: LFL is an airline based in Santiago, Chile. It is the principal Chilean airline and one of the largest in South America, with flights to Latin America, United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Oceania, and Europe.

Even if LAN wasn't reputable, what's the worst that could happen to you if they go out of business while you're down there? If you're just flying to NYC, you get the Greyhound back, and make a phone call to Visa. Done and done.

The only people who got incredibly screwed over by Zoom were the ones who got stranded halfway around the world and had to buy last-minute tickets home.

Shrug.

PR promo due to this?

On July 5, 2008, LAN Airlines flight 533 was involved in a near miss incident at New York's JFK airport. The aircraft, bound for Santiago, Chile, was nearly struck after take off by Cayman Airways flight 792. The Cayman aircraft, arriving at JFK from the Cayman Islands, performed a go-around after a missed landing on a perpendicular runway. Both aircraft performed steep axial tilts to avoid one another, under the control tower's direction. The FAA's statement on this incident is currently unclear, with some reports denying the incident ever happened.

Looks like LAN is a Chilean airline. It probably stops off in NYC to pick up more passengers and then heads to Chile. They probably just look to fill up the seats for the Toronto - NYC leg of the trip.

Tested... For Oct 03 to Nov 02 2008

Cheapoair has a better rate ($20), however, I think it is not the same
cos the journey is not same ( Cheap. uses US Airway and LAN uses
AA as return flight + Cheap got another stop in Phl)

so if you want extra 1000 points from LAN + save some time
on connecting, LAN.com has a better option.

How come these guys dont have the full set of "tax" implications which normally inflate the price flying from YYZ to NYC?

Here are the details:

Depart - December 26, 2008 from YYZ (Toronto Pearson), departs at 4:35 pm
Return - January 2, 2009 from JFK (New York City), returns at 10:05 am

Not sure if its been posted, but the 10$ savings is not so great considering if you go directly to www.lan.com the same flight will be 143.14 + a 3% (canadian) or 133.99 USD + 3% discountif you book directly from lan.com and you can get rewards from one world.

For those who have already flown LAN Airlines YYZ-JFK-YYZ, a couple questions for clarification:

1. For the YYZ-JFK leg, do we preclear US CBP in Toronto?
2. What time do you recommend getting to the airport? I imagine this flight continues on to Santiago and, thus, most people will be at YYZ 3 hours+ in advance.

I just typed in Nov 22- Nov 29 and the price is coming up for 2 people at 543.40 why can't I seem to fine the special fare

There are two possibilities:

1) The base fare which produced the $148 all-in is no longer available or
2) the dates you are looking for are sold out.

You should google how to find lowest price fares and understand how fare buckets work.

I got the cheap fare just yesterday for TOR-NYC, but had to fly Delta back to Toronto. Still came to a respectable $197 total....booked thru cheaptickets.com...

NYC for a bachelor party over the Halloween weekend...can't wait!

Now if only I could get a deal on hotels....that's the killer

if you book on expedia for that time, it comes out to about $100 cheaper.

LAN has nice planes. The seats were roomy, you get your own tv and get to choose what to watch on it. Even had video games on it. You get a sandwich for a snack and not just peanuts. I would recommend it...

We just returned from NYC on LAN Airlines. Left YYZ on Friday and returned Monday. Cost was just under CAD 200.00 each all-in. I would recommend LAN for sure. The service was great. On the return trip, we were upgraded to J class which was nice. My only complaint is that they did not have any Canadian declaration/disembarkation cards on-board and we had to complete them in the Customs hall. Just a minor annoyance on an otherwise flawless flight.

On the way to NYC, did the flight clear US customs in YYZ or JFK?

That's a great deal and I'm trying to take advantage of it but I've been unable to find a hotel in downtown NY from Wednesday 22nd October - Saturday October 25th.Does anyone know of any good hotel deals or have any info they can offer?

try priceline.com "name your own price"....I got Manhattan Marriott with 2 double beds for $200/night when normal rack rate is $472....betterbidding.com lists latest priceline "win" prices and helps figure out what hotels hotwire has too....

Agree to go with Priceline.com. It's the best way to get the cheapest hotels...by bidding. It takes some research if you want the lowest price.

Double check also with hotelpricefinder.com.
Not sure what to bid? Check for previous bids on betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com.

It is all explained here in RFD's travel section.:)

I wish there was an easier way of getting the best flights.

US customs cleared at TORONTO. so all you have to do in JFK is
clear your bags at Domestichttp://services.snipshot.com/scratch/uudavq6c1.tif/size_636,477/quality_0.45/snipshot.jpg

For those who have already flown LAN Airlines YYZ-JFK-YYZ, a couple questions for clarification:

1. For the YYZ-JFK leg, do we preclear US CBP in Toronto?
2. What time do you recommend getting to the airport? I imagine this flight continues on to Santiago and, thus, most people will be at YYZ 3 hours+ in advance.

best time to be at YYZ is About 2 PM

If you're just flying to NYC, you get the Greyhound back

That's a pretty bad thing to happen. I don't want to risk losing my head, catching a disease or getting stabbed.

Seriously, how reputable is this airline?

Pretty reputable. They have seatback TVs...c'mon dude. I'm not basing it just on that, but it's a good indicator things are 'ok' with them.

The best: UNITED. Its' an AC code share (book on aircanada.com and not united.com) and its about 49.00 each way. A colleague booked this fare last night for next weekend. They are have similar fares to Newark and Chicago.

But do check it out.
