View Full Version : [Merged] Dell Ultrasharp 2408 24" LCD $499, Inspiron has sold out
AndrewRFD
Aug 15th, 2008, 10:02 AM
UPDATE: Desktop is now officially sold out. The monitor is still available as of this update.
We've got some hot, limited quantity offers (500 redemptions each) from Dell this morning! The last limited quantity offer (the $399 Inspiron 1525) sold out in less than 24 hours, so if either of these items interest you, don't hesitate too long.
First off, there's a very cheap Inspiron 530 desktop PC for $299 in Pentium Dual-Core configuration or in Core 2 Duo Configuration (E4600) for $339. The specs are:
Intel Pentium dual-core processor E2180 (1MB L2 Cache,2.00GHz,800 FSB) English
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic Service Pack 1
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 2DIMMs
250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
16x DVD+/-RW Drive
1 Year Next Business Day Onsite/In Home Service and Tech Support
Note that in addition to a lower price than the Vostro 200 offerings in the past couple of weeks, the Inspiron 530 also comes with a 250GB hard drive as opposed to the 160GB seen in the Vostros. Upgrades worth mentioning include the E4600 for $40, the Q6600 for $140 (making for a Q6600 system for $439), and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 for $89. As mentioned on the page, use coupon code 65PQH8RRFPRSFN at the checkout to bring the price down.
Second, all of you who were hungering for the Ultrasharp 2408 during the Days of Deals have had your wish granted - use the coupon code KMBSCN39RXNX04 to knock $200 off the $699 price tag for a price of $499! As always, shipping is free.

4 DIMM slots
PCIe x16 slot, but no PCIe power plug, so unless you plan to replace the PSU or jury-rig adaptors, you'll be limited to the 9500GT/8600GT/HD3650 or lower.

If anything else changes, I'm sure I can change my order over the phone.

Apparently the firmware is out but there's no guarantee you'll get a monitor with the new revised firmware. I've heard of people that have ordered recently and still got the monitor with the old firmware.

yeah... I just bought the Samsung 245b from Infonec for $350...
Seeing how 2408 and most SPVA monitors are not as FAST as TN panels...
I finally decided to save $150 and get the monitor better for gaming ! !!
However, the 2408 is indeed a much prettier monitor to view pictures and what not~!
but I can live with $150 extra dollars and a less vivid coloured monitor! :D

Well, I bit the bullet and picked up one. The last time I saw it around this price was $449 on easter, but that was with 3GB ram. I think the ram back then was 667 then.
Anyway, the price is good. It may or may not go cheaper during xmas, may or may not be packaged with better vid card choices, etc. I figured it's just about time to bite the bullet and get it over with.
Now, off to ncix to pick up an 8600GT which will do me just fine in this machine without a new power supply. I only use my PC to play WoW anyway. I have a PS3/360/Wii for other stuff.

That's a little high, that's why.
The specs says it needs 350, so 300 isn't that far off....I wouldn't put any faster of a graphics card in there.
If you upgrade the CPU for $40, this thing will be faster. This thing is a good deal.

What is better?
The HP Refurb deal at FS (I got one) for $380
4 gig ram + 500 gig hd
or the Inspiron 530 with CPU upgrade to e4600 for $340?
2 gig ram + 250 gig hd
The only thing better is the CPU in the Inspiron

Brought one @ $339 (390 with taxes) with Core2 Duo Processor E4600. 15 mins later, my kid called back, asking to get another one of same configuration for himself as he is working. Wow!! a warning popup telling me that I had already ordered one and asking whether to continue the 2nd so I did and it went through with same price. Got both email confirmations. Also hopefully aeroplan give its miles (1=$1) instead of going for airmiles (1=$20) as I processed through its estore website. The 500 limit is getting closer so better hurry not to miss the deal. Thanks OP.

Most important missing would be the Media functions, such as streaming to PS3/Xbox 360! The $30 upgrade to Vista Premium might be worth if you have a PS3/Xbox 360...but for sure the CPU must be upgraded for $40, it's well worth it to core 2 duo, but not the $100 cpu upgrade.
Very good system for the price, sure you can't play Cyrsis on it, but most people don't play that game :)

I've been waiting to buy a 2408 until I was sure that I would get an A01 rev. Hopefully if I order today, it will be the updated (less lag) version of the monitor. I wonder how long I have until all 500 are gone. I want to hold off as long as possible.
For those that are interested in what this lag issue is, and want to read posts from some very vocal people, and a Dell rep that is trying his best to appease them, check out this form. It's 83 pages long.

No Vista for me. Hard to digest = too bloated. Thinking of downgrading with Win XP Pro as I happened to have a copy when my ordered unit (vista basic) arrives. Now searching Dell support for related XP drivers for i530 to download. Most games are XP-supported including less buggy on pci-e video cards, running XP. However, I might be wrong as I am more bias towards XP os than Vista. MS is also coming out with a new Window os next year if it is on schedule to be launched (but I doubt .. maybe another 2-3 more years before MS releases new OS).

Yeah, I could do that also...I'm used to Vista now though. Let me know how it goes with the drivers, I might go your route :)
This motherboard doesn't have a PCIe 16x 2.0 slot so I don't think anyone is going to be putting in a Geforce 9800GTX+ anytime soon with Vista.

I confirmed with them it's a 300 Watt power supply, no gaming graphics cards in there for sure :) At least, nothing above a Geforce 7800 series.

The motherboard uses the Intel G33 chipset, so you can install the newer Yorkfield CPU's and PCI-Express 2.0 video cards.

I confirmed with them it's a 300 Watt power supply, no gaming graphics cards in there for sure :) At least, nothing above a Geforce 7800 series.
That's not completely true. The standard power supply is 300W but if you order a Inspiron 530 with a quad core processor you get an upgraded 350W power supply with a 6-pin graphics card power connector. The 300W power supply does not have the 6-pin power connector.
However, one problem I found is that it's a hassle to use a "long" video card like a 3850. The card is difficult to install under the hard drives and it's tricky to reach and engage the PCIe slot release tab to get it out again. Also, the card sits right beside the RAM slots, blocking their release tabs so if you ever want to add or remove RAM you'll have to take the video card out first. In the end I decided not to bother with the 3850 and will instead use a shorter card.

August 25th for me as well. The first time I ordered from Dell were for EP-630 headphones. About a week after I placed the order, I received an e-mail saying that shipping's been delayed for 2 weeks but I got the package the next day. Their shipping status they show you might be misleading? :|

You can tell the difference between A00 and A01 via the sharpness control in the OSD. IF it's the new revision, it will have increments of 10 for sharpness vs. 25 for the original iteration.
Dell is currently only shipping the A01 revision to distribution points, but certain warehouses still have the A00 revision in there.
If this info is accurate, it means these are indeed A00 revisions, unless someone else got an email with the 320-6277 part number?

They are dumping the old revision, and doing so with this rebate, accept it, very few people are getting the new revisions, the old one is still heavily in the channel.
Here is a link to an 85 page thread on the Dell forums about this monitor and the revisions, just read a bit of it and you will see that it is barely appearing yet. There are a lot of graphic professionals reporting daily on the product they are getting shipped to them, and the promises being made by Dell. ie: One guy bought 10 on the guarantee all were new revision, none were, that was a week ago.

Found this on the Dell forum, from a person who had part number ending in 6277:
Got the new monitor and XPS today. As someone pointed out, clearly the different part number on the order is because it was added to a system. I got revision A00, made in mexico in June 2008. Adjustments are in blocks of 25 and not 10.
Ordered the 31st in the afternoon. Shipped friday.
So, I don't think the part number is indicative of A00/A01 after all.
I think it's worth a roll of the dice, as there are definitely A01s shipping out. Besides, if you use the HDMI input, apparently there is no exagerated lag.

That's what I'm really hoping is fixed with the new revision. So far, reports from the dell community forums and enthusiast sites are good. Input lag has been reduced to very tolerable levels, and the sharpness settings/text rendering has also been improved.

lol. I was doing the same thing after I pulled the trigger. I actually saw the Dell forum where the Dell person answers questions and is keeping people informed about the revision. He basically said don't call Dell saying you want an exchange 'cause of the new revision. Otherwise most dell reps won't give it to you. Just mention problems about the monitor and they'll do the exchange.
You can even PM the guy and he'll process your exchange.

This was the built i almost bought yesterday (from the other thread) but then decided i can pretty much build the same system (o/s not an issue since i got quite a few free keys from campus).
The thing that killed the $140 upgrade is the fact the CPU (q6600) can be had for ~190 right now while e2180 can be had for ~70. That means the upgrade cost should be around $120 instead of $140. Add in the $10 recycle fee for BC (don't need to pay if you don't have it prebuilt), it makes the deal yesterday not nearly as hot (altho still hot, just not as hot as it could be).
Then i also figured i don't want another spare 300W SPU so i decided to not buy that system altogether...:cheesygri The system itself is great for a basic computer but if you need something more than basic (reason for q6600 in a lot of cases), its probably a better idea to customize it with a decent video card/psu. Plus its easily to overclock an unlocked mobo then one that is locked so you get better performance.
Only upgrades i would consider in that deal = upgrade to e4xxx CPU and possibly Vista Home Premium (i consider it a decent upgrade over basic). Other upgrades just cools the deal.
Edit - Hmm... wasn't i posting in another thread with a q6600 build???

If what the Dell rep wrote (http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=93309#M93309) is true, all new and refurbished 2408wfp monitors being shipped now have had a firmware update applied that lessens the input lag, allows greater control over sharpness settings and offers improved power save recovery.
The post is dated 24 July 2008 and it was recommended that people wait a couple of weeks before ordering to ensure the new stock hits the supply chains.
It's been nearly a month so I'm hoping that the firmware will be installed on the unit I ordered.
Supposedly, this how I can find out:
"Due to a Dell internal process change many of the 2408's that will ship new with the revised firmware will have a different part number and not a different revision number. The only way you will be able to tell if it's the revised firmware is to check the sharpness setting, if the setting is in multiples of 10 then it is the revised firmware if it's in multiples of 25 then it's not. The part number has nothing to do with the revision but someone decided since we are changing the part number anyway the firmware will be A00 on that part number."
Check out tftcentral.co.uk for a review of the 2408wfp (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_2408wfp.htm) and demonstration of the input lag it suffered.

Just to add, my 2nd order of the inspiron deal is ready for shipping eta 20th Aug and the 1st order of the same (done 15 mins earlier on the 15th Aug) eta 28th Aug. WTF??? unable to handle 500 units and made/deliver in order sequences. Poor Dell!! lately, also heard of its Support CRS giving 'bad' info esp warranty issues. Just keep your records/details to backup any discrepancies.

Shipping time was faster than 2 previous promos. Weird that Rev00 hasn't been weeded out but remember if yours performs to your satisfaction then it's better to keep it - at least until real problems appear.
Dell attaches VGA cable to LCD ahead of time. This is normal for most monitors they sell. It's also screwed on very tight so be careful not to bend pins or the VGA port when you remove it.

My point was regardless of what Jimmy is saying in that thread they were still up to 3 days ago shipping out the old firmware in both new and refurbs. This can be further evidenced by people in this thread now posting they got the old revision of the firmware.
Until such a time as the people on that forum or HardForum are posting that they are all getting the new revisions I would take what Jimmy says with a very large grain of salt, or you will be playing Dell RMA Roulette. :(

for you guys that got a00, wait 2 weeks or so before you return the monitor. you can return it within 21 days, so the longer you hold off, the better chance you have of getting an a01.
like others have said, don't call them and say you want the new revision, just say that you have extremely slow response time with the monitor and that it's unacceptable.
for people who have gotten a01, if you have dual output graphics cards, can you do a test similar to this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnApFzmd9NY with your current and new 24" dell monitor to see how the lag is ?

At work, we bought a 2408 few months back. I was impressed with it back then. Super bright, vibrant colors, massive amount of inputs, card reader, usb hub, etc. Wow, I wanted one.
So when the deal came up, I didn't hesitate to jump on it. Then I checked the forums and learn about the A00 issues. Damn, now I'm worried.
I took the one at work and plugged into the DVI and tested lag with another LCD monitor also DVI. Didn't notice any lag (moving a window up and down between the 2 monitors.) Great, I though. DVI lag is minimal compared to VGA analog. I have DVI where I'll be using mine, so looks like lag isn't an issue for me.
Finnaly got mine, it was an A00  , Sharpness inc of 25. Disappointment settled in. Then I installed it and checked it out for myself. Wow, disappointment disappeared. Zero pixel defects, virtually undetectable lag (if any). I also know if calibrated properly, the colors are perfect.
Defects aside, it's still 95% great monitor...maybe in a couple of years I'll sell this puppy and upgrade to an even bigger and better monitor.
I won't be returning my A00 as it's brand new (July 2008) and unopened. Getting a refurb or someone's else returned A00 in exchange is simply not worth it for me. If I didn't know about the defects, I'd be one happy camper. Heck, I'm still a happy camper. My monitor works to my satisfaction and then some. As you get older you tend to be less anal about things.
Mine was being shipped 30 minutes later in the shipping queues than someone else that received an A01. So ordering time or shipping time won't guarantee you an A01. You'll know when you get it.
Thanks for the head up on the deal, RedFlagDeals. Much appreciate it!

For anyone who wants to check for dead pixel we use dead pixel buddy software. It's small application and free.

However, since it's been only 1 day I received mine, he accepted placing an order for a brand new one. Thing is I'm still not guaranteed in getting an A01 but it's most likely. If I still don't, he said I can get it exchanged again but this time I should take a refurb. :(

I just ended up sending a PM to jimmy in the Dell forums. He is gathering a huge list of people to do a massive exchange. He'll arrange to have a monitor sent to people, then you stick the other one back in the box and send it back. I think he's just gathering a list and waiting until he knows the monitors will be the new revision. As long as the monitor gives me no probs i'm happy.

After looking over this monitor once again.
I realize why this monitor was such a pain in the friggin' eye!!!
It has some sort of hologram feel to it!!!
Painful when browsing and reading!!
For this price I highly recommend the Benq FP241W. You won't get no hologram type effect with this monitor. Extremely crispy!!!
You can stare into it for hours and your eyes won't water like the dell monitor.
Don't take my word for it! Do your research. If you're lucky enough you may have a friend with a Benq FP241W or better to compare with.

Yes, the tech I spoke to told me that. However, an exchange == getting a refurbished by default. I explicitely asked to get a brand new one, and for those, they don't have any control whether it has the new firmware.
However, there basically isn't any A00 in the distribution channel anymore. I was unlucky to have gotten an A01-branded (on the box), manufactured in August 2008, with the OLD firmware. :| That's why I'm confident I'll get a brand new 'real' A01 this time. :D

One question though, are the people complaining about the text using Cleartype? I used to have cleartype on the darkest possible setting for my old LCD but that setting doesn't look good at all on the 2408. Text looks much better at cleartypes lightest setting.
Hope that helps!

Got my orders and going about to downgrade to XP. Was able to find XP drivers for intergrated video (intel), int. sound(realtex) and int. nic(intel). The unit boots much better and fast BUT something is missing .. sm bus driver?? as flagged in the system device. Does the chipset driver needs to update (as I did not use Intel chipset update) or simply ignored it? Any help, please.
Additional info:
SIW states the chipset as P35/G33(bearlake). The Dell 530 motherboard is made by Foxconn (model G33M 02).

Thats what we thought but it's really the monitor. The dell monitor has this hologram effect. It looks like it has two layers on the screen caused by the halo twinkling effect. It really bothers the eye.
Also on the left end of the screen you may see a faint vertical line. The vertical line is about a few pixel away from the left end.

you should probably wait a week or so and then call them to have a better chance of getting a NEW a01.
if you just ask for an exchange, they'll probably send you a refurbished one with the a01 firmware unless you explicitly ask for a brand new monitor. getting a refurbished monitor for $600 is really a rip-off.

If I get the monitor, and I want a full refund for it for being a00, can I just send it back to them and say give me my money back? (Rather have my money back than a refurb).

Whatever you do, don't mention to the person that you want a refund/new one because you got the old firmware. They aren't allowed to do anything based on "firmware" alone. Just mention problems with the monitor and they can do something.

i need some advice guys.
I made my order on 8/16, got the monitor yesterday and it's an A00 but when I plugged it in with DVI instead of analog, I don't notice much lag when moving windows.
haven't tried it in intense games yet (ie. COD4) but just want to know, are there anyone out there who owns a A00 monitor and don't get input lag? how rampant is this issue?
cause I'm really deciding if I should send mine back and ask for an exchange.
also, this monitor is pretty bright. i dunno if it's normal with an LCD cause I had a CRT before but I already turned down brightness and it's still bright

Haven't played any games yet, but for every day use you won't really notice any lag. The only small problem I have with the monitor is some text has a pink/reddish outline to it. Hopefully that's resolved with the new firmware.
The actual exchange of the monitor isn't much of a hassle if that's what you're worried about. They'll ship you another monitor and you just return yours in the same box with the waybill they provide. You could just wait it out and see what others get back with their exchange and then decide. I'll post back when I get my exchange goes through.
As for brightness, I turned mine down and I find it perfect. Maybe it's just a personal preference thing. Try playing around with some of the other settings to see if you can get a better display.

I read somewhere dell is not going to release any firmware.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The lag is only noticeable for FPS type games..so I read. I personally haven't tested it.
If you plan on doing a lot of browsing, applications etc. I suggest your return it and get the Benq FP241W.
For gaming and videos it should be good.

it is firmware upgradable. the hardware between a00 and a01 is the exact same.
they just tweaked the fw to reduce the lag.
they don't release the fw to users to allow end-user upgradability because they don't want to deal with returns for bad flashes.

no. it's pretty much we're not gonna give you the firmware and only we will update it.
the community relations guy on the dell forum said that the dell employees flashing the monitors have unusually high flash failure problems, so that's why they don't release the fw. this is probably partly true, because flashing monitor fw isn't really as common as flashing the motherboard bios or dvd drive firmware.

Well here's the deal.....
I've been using the dell 2007wfp S-IPS panel for a couple years now and it's been perfect though it does have a tiny bit of backlight bleeding in the bottom right hand corner which I can only notice when running dead pixel buddy.
I've been wanting to upgrade to a 24" for a while now and when I saw this deal, I jumped on it. Even though I knew all the problems with the 2408, I wanted to test it out for myself.
When the monitor arrived eariler this week, I was disappointed to see that I received the A00. After powering it on and testing it for a bit, I could notice the input lag right away and it was quite annoying. I also checked the service menu and noticed that it had about 60 hours on it already even though it was a new monitor.
Anyways, I called dell thursday morning for an exchange and received a refurbished one :( yesterday. (extremely quick service) Well this refurb. one was the new A01 (sharpness of 10) and the input lag was definitely improved. This one also didn't have any dead pixels.
One of the things that annoys me the most about this monitor (on both firmwares and even more so then the input lag) is the red tint and the left side of the monitor been noticeably brighter. I can clearly see it on http://www.gamespot.com/ & http://www.torrent-damage.net/
Overall this is an average monitor at a decent price, but if you're coming from a old school crt or even a TN panel lcd, you will probably like this monitor. However this monitor isn't for me. I can finally understand why people praise S-IPS monitors so much, because after testing the 2408wfp A01 and 2007wfp side by side, the 2007wfp is clearly better overall imo.

Coming from S-IPS, any other panel will look inferior. It all has to do with cost though. I will look around for a good deal on an S-IPS close to boxing day.

IPS panel are a total different beast.
I'm going to sound like a broken record now but for mid-size range monitor go for Benq FP241W. In terms of clarity it'll destroy the dell 2408.
The text and images really pops out on the benQ.
The down side of BenQ is they don't have the dead pixel guarantee like dell.
BenQ uses a MPVA panel where as Dell uses SPVA panel.
I do not know the difference between the panels but if you ever get the chance to compare them side by side. You'll see why I praise BenQ.

Bring up the hidden service menu on your brand new 2408wfp by turning on the monitor with the MENU and + pressed....then hit the - key. It's report a lot of stuff including how long the monitor has been on and how long the backlight has been on.
Great way to find out how much 'refurb' you get with your A01 when you get it...or get someone elses
Mine started at 0 hours for my A00 which I'm keeping, BTW. Lag barely noticeable on DVI-1 (my main concern.)

So you mean , even with Revision A01 , pinkish hue still appears ?
For the kind of money ( even 499$ with 200 off) this shouldnt be .Thinking of returning it also , cuz this pinkish hue bugs me ,specialy when screen has more whites.I tried calibratng , brightness levels , contrast etc . .. as soon as a white page is on screen , that hue appears on both sides specialy when you look at monitor dead center , you can notice the hue on each side .

No dead pixels or pink hue, and sharpness increments of 10. Very happy with my purchase! Was still using an old Dell 19" LCD with horribleeeeeeee quality - especially the text.

Got the 2408 today (ordered Thursday the last day). Unfortunately it is a A00.
I have a 2405 monitor as well. The colours on the 2408 is better than the 2405. My 2405 looks so dark compared to the 2408. I guess because my 2405 is now like 2 years old. On clone, a white on 2408 is like a grey on the 2405. What would be the best way to match the colours to be more consistant?
But the thing is I don't notice any of the problems of the A00. The input lag on the 2408 on mine is only an average of 0.3 seconds compared to the 2405. I do see the pink-ish hue but it at the very bottom (where the taskbar would be) and only appears on pure white screens. I didn't bother touching the sharpness setting because I can read the text fine.
I have no dead pixels as well so I don't think I will bother exchanging the 2408 for a A01 revision.

that's not really lag ... the flashes happen even with a TN panel monitor ...
to see the lag extend your 2408 desktop to your older monitor and then drag a window up and down and you'll see that the 2408 lags behind quite significantly ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnApFzmd9NY

Ordered mine Aug 21 and got it today. A00 version from Mexico. Dell says it was a new monitor but:
- the VGA cord had been broken out of the bag and connected to the panel
- some of the packaging had been opened of had creases
- bezel had finger prints and 2 scuffs
New replacement is being sent. Fingers crossed.
Question: I compared this quickly to my 2208 (glossy) and the picture wasn't as pleasing to the eye (quick comparison). Everything seemed blurred and colours were not punchy.

Just got off the phone with a pretty nice rep. I ordered my 2408wfp on Aug 15 and received on Aug 22...A00 (July, Mexico).
Very good back light uniformity and no red haze on either side but I did notice the nasty halos around text (vga input only) and noticeable input lag. For the price, I'd prefer the monitor to be near flawless for a S-PVA panel.
NEW monitor (confirmed with another department) should arrive within 24 to 48h. They seem to be good about sending out new units if you emphasize that you've only had it for a few days.
I didn't want to wait any longer and risk getting a refurb. Their warranty clearly states replacements are usually refurbs and my rep did have to ask his supervisor...

I see no major flaws in the image and was going to test it side by side 2407WFP (non-HC) vs 2408WFP A01 and 2408WFP A00 but my splitter didn't work for some reason. On it's own I think the image of the A00 seems perfectly fine. I tested for ghosting and looked for clouding and tints but so far nothing so having an A00 does not automatically warrant a replacement unless I am missing something? gotto do more research I guess

For those of you who bought the $299 Inspiron 530 , YES IT CAN BE DONE...YOU CAN JAM IN a BFG Geforce 9800 GTX + with an Antec 650 Watt power supply :)
Purchases:
1) You need longer SATA cables for the HD and DVD burner, if you have another DVD drive in there, you are in big trouble as the Geforce 9800 GTX will COVER SATA ports 0 and 1, if you really need a port from there, buy a cable that is ANGLED...but depending on which way it is ANGLED, it may cover the other port next to it...now you only have 3 SATA ports.
2) Earthwatts Antec PSU 650 Watts
3) Your Geforce 9800 GTX+ 512 megs (or lower will fit I'm sure...such as an 8800 GT).
How you need to do this (warning, you should have some basic computer part installation skills to do this!!!) GROUND YOURSELF AND UNPLUG THE POWER TO YOUR COMPUTER!
1) Remove the old crappy 300 watt powersupply, WARNING YOU HAVE TO ANGLE IT OUT, the top of the case rubs up against it. Do not pull it out completely as there are TWO WIRES CLIPPED into these metal hooks, you'll need to bend them UP to get out the power cables.
2) remove all power cables from motherboard
3) take out the old SATA cables from the DVD and the Hard drive, put in the NEW ONES into the SATA ports BELOW the ones that Dell used.
4) You need to BEND DOWN those two metal hooks where the old power cables were clipped or the Antec PSU will NOT FIT. Now angle in the Antec PSU in.
5) Now attached all the power wires, note, you need two PCI Express power cables for the Geforce 9800 GTX, untie those too!
6) Power up your computer to ensure all is well...Windows Vista should still boot even though you changed the SATA cables to a lower one. It will "detect new hardware". Shutdown after that.
7) Take out the unscrew the one screw that holding in all the metal bay covers at the back of the PC.
8) ANGLE in (ugh) the Geforce 9800 GTX into the Dell Inspiron 530. Plug in the two PCI express power cables from the Antec PSU.
9) Fix up all cables so they are neat and not blocking any air flow
10) Plug in your monitor and boot up and download the latest drivers from http://www.nvidia.com
ENJOY your $299 Dell folks!
On a side note, um...anyone figure out how the heck to get off that HUGE METAL PIECE covering the floppy drive?! How did you get it off?
