I've never had any problems with Fuji. I think Verbatim is actually a different company now and they are not the same quality that they used to be.

I will give Fujifim a try.

what's better? The FS Verbatim (Yonge and Dundas had the new packaging Verbatims, like Staples) that are made in taiwan for $22.99... Or these Fujis for $19?

I've never had any issues with Fujifilm media. The DVD+/-Rs are apparently not as good now but I've never had any issues at all.
I still have a stack of the MIJ CD-Rs from the good old days. Dubbed the most reliable CD-R. :)

I don't use them, but this is what I have read online:
"There have been numerous complaints about Verbatim's that are made in India.
Previously, they were manufactured in Singapore, and very few people have had problems with them, but ever since the India discs began coming out, the quality has plummeted"

Good luck with that, Bay/Dundas in Toronto hid their stock.
This morning on the bb website, they were selling for 52.99, now down to 27.99 still a pm opp but not as good.

They had to phone a Future Shop to make sure they had stock.
This was at Eglinton and Warden in Scarborough.

No memorex for me. They are not very good at all but others might argue otherwise

I picked up a couple packs today at FS. They are the new packaging and MIT. Can't go wrong for $18.

I bought a few spindles of the DVD-R from FS at XMAS.
In imgburn, the manufacturer for the Fujifilm DVD-R comes up as "RitekF" so I assume that Ritek is the OEM and the "F" must be a Fujifilm specific formulation.
I haven't had any problems in my gear (which tends to be picky), although some of my friends claim to have had trouble with the burns I gave them

Thanks OP! Going to BB to PM tonight :)
On the side though...
I've had the best success with Verbatim and Memorex DVD's on all my hardware and parents hardware.
Sony's had high fail rates when I tried them... but I bought them when I still thought all blank media was the same... naive child I was.
From there I went to Memorex because I worked at WM when I was just 15 and they were so cheap... worked well for 4 years until I discovered the documentation on Verbatim's quality, now I am skeptical about branching out.... but this sounds like the right price and never had a problem with other Fuji products in the past.
for 15.39... who can argue that!

So Fujifilm is similar to Ritek. How do these Fuji's compare to Taiyu's quality wise? (ie. shelf life for archived data).

Yeah, that's what I discovered in Mississauga. During my lunch I visited Downsview and the buried the +R spindles! I had to fish 2 spindles from behind the display...then the CSR was difficult and told me to stand by the front cash register. Uh Uh, I waited, I have my price printout, I have store availability highlighted & math worked out.
Dude relented and was helpful - processed my PM. Gotta hand it to RFD standard operating procedures --> go in prepared
Update --> I counted at least 10 -R spindles at Downsview. +R may be all gone unless they restock.

Is the author talking about dl disks? I've read that Verbatim's mis dl disks are far superior to mii disks.
I never knew that Verbatim made sl disks in s or i.

-R is more compatible with the older DVD players out there.

I don't understand. If practically every player nowadays supports + and -, then why are there still 2 types? Why couldn't one standard be used by now? I guess it's just personal preference?

Yes, but in theory, + is a better standard. I've forgotten the details but the most important part is in how clocking is derived from the datastream.
(I go off to google...)

This seems like a good article. The differences are more complicated than I remember. But + seems clearly superior.

It was, and probably still is, about $$$ (eg. royalties).

I believe this comment is likely referring to dual-layer discs.
I can't recall I've seen MIS & MII Verbatim single-layer discs as they are mainly MIT.

I better stick to my CD-R then as I have one or two older CD players around the house.
Are the differences noticeable when listening to the CD? I have not noticed any problems on any of my CD-Rs with music on them.

If anyone is in the U.S. this week, Circuit City has 100 Nexxtech CD-R's (52x / 700MB) for a whopping $9.99. I was there yesterday, grabbed a cake of 100 and burned 4 discs without any problems so far - works in the car and on the older home CD stereo.
Regular price is $25 U.S. and in Canada it's regular $50 (on sale for $45 at The Source CC this week)

errrr... the +/-R compatability for old standalones only apply to blank dvds.... not cd-r
it's not like there's a +/- format for blank cds.

Good price.
However, I PMed the 100 pack of Memorex at Future Shop yesterday with Cdn Tire's flyer and got them for $15.99 +tax. I've had excellant experience with both Fijifilm and Memorex, so to me they are both good.
