I like the price and it's good for first-time users or tight budgets...
BUT:
* these specs were offered last summer @ BB for $349 (ACER) and @ FS for $399 (HP)
* Sampron is OK, performs well for daily tasks, don't expect Vista to fly
* Acer has a horrible history for quality & warranty. Search RFD for customer feedback
* This Can't Compare with last week's Dell $399 Inspiron 1525 Dual Core with HDMI output
Still, it's a $399 laptop which was unheard of 2 years ago. Acer or not, it's a good buy if you take care of it and use a UPS/Surge protector.

Depending on how you handle your laptop Acer's can be very stable. My fiancee's Acer that I got for $399 - $100 coupon at Staples almost 2 years ago is still going very strong. However she is much more gentle with her machine then I ever am with mine, and never really took it anywhere. It just stayed at home in her studio or on her lap when she was watching tv.

An AMD Sempron is a close equivalent to a Intel Celeron.
For basic operations, it's an okay.

Acer's a waste if you're spending over $800 expecting Lenovo quality. However, Acer offers good value for students and families looking for a backup unit. Look for models offering S-Video because you can attach it to a TV and stream Youtube & Movies. It becomes a very very affordable digital player.
Celeron M should never be confused with previous generation Celerons. Current Celerons are very fast and efficient, you won't notice differences with Dual Cores unless you're undervolting or performing intense editing. Celerons are faster than Samprons due to Cache size & instructions and $399 for entry-level full feature laptops is very good.

I don't know for sure, $399 is this season's "loss leader" to lure customers to purchase add-ons like cables & such. They're always limited supply or ship-only (ie. no store pickup). I suspect each retailer will offer a matching $399 during back-to-school but in the past, when this ends you'll have to wait for Boxing Day's limited door crashers.
As I mentioned, no one can predict how retailers determine final price but most laptops start at $599 and up for current components. "Starter" laptops this Aug/Sept is $399+TAX. You can always upgrade Ram & HDD but having a S-Video or Memory Card reader is very convenient. HDMI output is RARE on sub $599 laptops...the only consumer-friendly model is Dell's 1525 ~$499/$549/$699/+++
That $399 1525 was a limited promo and it sold out that same evening.
ya it seems like all the 399 laptops are for back to school. i am guessing sales will go till end of august at least. hopefully i can pick something up.
I agree you'll find a $399 Celeron unit before school begins. However, many $399 deals require you to purchase online and pay shipping. Only Dell offered free shipping (free ship on all PC & Laptops). But remember, Dell delivery requires 5-10 Business day fulfillment (2 Weeks). RFDers who purchased on Aug. 8th won't receive delivery until late Aug or Sept. 1st (estimated arrival). It's too bad FS & BB don't allow in-store pickup.
