was talking to a classmate who told me about cars, and was told that it would be better to buy a new Hyundai Accent for 10k on than to buy a second hand 98 civic for 6k since one would have to pay for repairs every year to get it fixed-water pump, changing the belt,...etc and one would have to spend approx 1k every year to get repairs done.

but if one was to get the accent brand new a 7 yr warranty would come with the car, and if it needed repairs one wouldn;t even have to spend money to get it fixed.

buying a 12 yr old car for 6k , he said he reather spend 10k and get a brand new accent and you don;t even have to fix it and after the 7 yr warranty you could just sell it out.

if you buy lets say a 97-99 civic for around 6-9k how much would you think repairs would cost per yr. it would cost like around 1k every yr for repairs for a older 12 yr old car

what deal do you guys think is better buy the accent for brand new for 10k / or finacne it for 3 yrs or the second hand civic or even second hand car for approx 5-7k.

but then if you get an accent you will always get this uh that a piece of *** kind of car

oh btw i', a guy who doesn;t now anything about fixing cars . he said the accent would be a good car for a guy like me since i now nothing about fixing car, and i don;t

If you can afford it, I'd say take a brand new Accent over a 10 yr old Civic.

There is too much unknown with a 10 yr old car, no one can really predict how much you will spend for repair each year as reliability on such old car depends on how it was maintained by the previous owner(s).

The basic Accent hatchback is about 12k after taxes.

Here are some things I disliked about the Accent GL (sedan):

4 speakers - 2 in the front door, 2 in the back
It's hard to hear because there's no speakers on the dash

The chime
It get's annoying hearing the same chime (Hyundai Pony) for MANY years but also a bit nostalgic

Driver leg room
I test drove the automatic and there was decent leg room for basic throttle/brake control but got the manual without a test drive. The Accent has almost the same amount of leg room as a Pony. I don't like driving with my legs in a lounger position but don't really mind. Because of the lack of leg room, sometimes I put my foot too far up/in and can't clutch out properly.

Fan control
I don't like how the OFF and fan direction settings were designed.

Also, there's no room for a tray under the front passenger seat

My mom doesn't like how the back seats are tilted back.

I love the a/c in the car. :)

Maybe I'm used to domestic car depreciation, but $6K for a TEN YEAR OLD CIVIC???

If you are not buying the civic for engine swap or special project, stick with a cheap econ car (not necessary a base accent). Any entry level class is good to go to Point A to point B. Anyhow, a civic isn't a much better car than an accent, especially it's a 1998 VS 2008

civic is a nice car, but don't get ripped off at that price.

Some cars have a center channel in the dash. Most have fronts in the doors or a-pillars.

Is the $9995 Accent still on? I could not find this in the Hyundai Canada website anymore.

The basic is $14K + freight + taxes.

It's still on. The rebates are for cash purchases only.

I'd still take a brand new accent with warranty over a 7 year old accord.

I Traded in my 2006 VW Golf and bought a 2008 Accent 3dr SE

The SE has 6 speakers, (Tweaters in the door) I dont know what you are talking about with center channel on a sub compact car. My moms 2008 Audi TT i dont think even has that lol

As for leg room, I am 6'4" and I think it has plenty of room (and yes it is a 5 speed)

the door chime is easily disabled, pop out the center stereo facia and it is on the right hand side (It is litterally a little bell) disconnect and problem solved.

IF you are interested in light modifications, Hyundai canada has a bunch of cool performance mods that are warrenty approved and available at your local dealer

- AEM Short Ram Intake
- DC Sport Strut Bar
- Vibrant Axel Back exaust system
- Carbon Fibre interior accent pieces
- Clarion Stereo System (With amp/sub/new deck)
- B&M Short Shifter

and more, all available at your dealer.

The accent is a solid, fun to drive car and I would say price/value it is much better then a Fit or a Yaris

Things like timing belts are normal maintenance, so that wouldn't be covered under warranty anyways on the new Accent.
I'd still go with the brand new Accent 100% of the time over a 10 year old car, but don't think you can just drive it for 7 years putting in gas and oil changes. There's gonna be other regular maintenance costs too.

Hi,

If you want to consider a used car (or even a new tiny one), I would recommend the Hyundai Elantra. It is praised everywhere as being the Best Purchase in the used car compact segment (reliability vs cost).

It is very reliable and, in my opinion, better than a Civic... here's why:

I got myself last fall a 2004 Elantra VE (fully equipped) with a bit high km (72000 - but i only drive 6-8000km a year) for 8000$. Please note that that 2004 was purchased by the original owner in July 2004, so it's pretty much like a 2005 age wise.

It was a great deal, also considering that i purchased it from the original owner, with complete service records, no accident, etc).

Hyundai had a promotion for 2004 Elantras at the time: all 2004 Elantras manufactured after a certain day in March 2004 had a 5 years/100,000km bumber to bumper warranty and 7 years/120,000km on major components! So the car is still under full warranty until July 2009 and major components are covered until 2011! can you believe this?!

That car has nothing but positive reviews everywhere - new or used. Trust me, i spent countless hours researching my purchase.

Now I traded a fully equipped 98 Civic for that Elantra.... i never thought i would say this, but i will never buy a Civic again! The Elantra for me is much more roomy, quieter, extremely powerful (most powerful car in its class in 2004), plenty of torque at any RPM, much better equipped (small details like power windows still operable when engine turned off, dimming light when entering vehicle, lighted ignition on dash, heated mirrors, height and angle adjustments of driver seat, steering mounted cruise control, light in trunk, etc, etc), more storage, amazingly comfortable (i would get sore in the Civic all the time; even after a 2-3 hours in the Elantra, i feel like stepping out of a lazyboy!).

Downside is a little thirstier than a Civic (but it's a 2.0 liter engine vs 1.8) and engine noisy on hard acceleration (very quiet at cruising speed though).

And the cherry on top was the price: about 3000-4000$ less than a 2004 Civic with an expired warranty and not as well equipped.

So even if the Elantra doesn't have as good a resale value as the Civic, paying so much less right off the bat (minus interest on that 3000-4000$ difference if you finance) even things out i believe....

Sorry about the long post... i just love my Elantra!!! :)
