Anyone know anything about grad student life at Western? I'll be starting a MSc in the life sciences this September, but it'd be great to hear about peoples' experiences in other departments/faculties too. Hopefully the environment will be productive AND fun, not just work-eat-sleep and so on...

London is a pretty boring city compared to Toronto and Montreal. Not all that many "classy" place in terms of shopping and entertainment. It does have a few decent restaurants, but if you are into clubbing and trendy music then you are again out of luck. For student that pulls all-nighters, food at late night is another issue. Your only choice is basically junk food. I would stay away from the Subway that opens 24/7 on Sarnia and Western Rd. The McDonalds on Wharncliffe and Oxford is also one to avoid.
Western had "the party school" reputation when I started my undergrad here. But to be honest, I think it's just lots of binge drinking, there is no quality to the so called party. Mind you that this is just my humble personal opinion.
From my own experience, many of the kids didn't get to party like crazy when they were in high school. So, they never got the drinking/staying out late thing out of their system. I did all that and more back in high school. So, it got bored for me very quickly, which is probably a good thing for me. Got me focused on my studies and I start my PhD in September.
If you got any questions about London or Western. Feel free to PM and I will do my best to help.

Just finished four years of undergrad at Western and I loved every second. You definitely chose a great place for "productive and fun", but it really depends on what you put into it. I also didn't really like the club scene but there are some great bars and a lot of tradition. For grad students especially, The Grad Club will definitely become a place that you have to become accustomed to (basement of Middlesex College).
Also, ignore the post above because the 24/7 Subway was a lifesaver.
