How's it work? I want to get to Markham from the London direction, are there toll booths or do we get a bill in the mail, and for how much?

Toll booths.....LOL...this ain't the states. It's all electronic, hence the name 407 ETR (Electronic Toll Route). You get bill in the mail.

You get charged an initial entry fee (like $2 or something--- they call it a video toll charge) and then you get charge per km after that.

Check the link (https://www2.407etr.com/TollCalculator/tolls_calculator.aspx) for fare calculator.

only 407 is a toll route....you get charge for a 'non-transponder' fee of $5 for each trip without your transponder...which you would be billed few weeks after your trip..you can sign up for a transponder to get that fee waive but you have to pay the lease of $2 (or maybe $3?) per month...and you get charge by the no. of kms you travelled

btw...auto forum?

The E in ETR stand for "Express" not "Electronic"

The Fee is now called a "Video Toll charge" and is $3.60, not $5.

It's to lease, not own. and it costs 21.50 + tax per year

If you are only going once then stay on the 401 and save a bundle. So it might take 10 minutes longer, big deal.

I avoid using that road even though it'll take longer using the 401 and 404.

That'll be the day I pay those thieves for using a road that my taxes helped build.

Those thieves put a large chunk of change back in the the coffers with your tax dollars. And your tax dollars no longer go to maintenance of the 407.

You have to compare charges. I recently took the I-90 in Buffalo from downtown to the Penn state line. The total cost was 2.85 US for about 100kms worth of driving.

The 407 thieves charge whatever they please. The province sold a long-term revenue source for a short-term gain to a bunch of people who now treat it like a public company rather than a public road. They can pull your license plates, take you to court as they please and generally have no rules to follow.

My personal experience is that they pulled my plate when they had a fuzzy picture of a car similar to mine in 2001. The plate in the pic was unreadable. They did the best they could to get me to admit it was my car and then sent the account to collections when I refused to pay. I have never used that road ever. They had zero proof that it was my car other than the model and colour. Eventually a lawyer's letter cleared it up and the province's ombudsman sided with me. It was cheaper to pay the bastards but principle told me not to.

Like I said, avoid the thieves at all costs. They do not care about anything but making someone, anyone pay for using the road. Whether you actually used it is irrelevant.

I definitely won't disagree that it is way more expensive then other toll roads, especially in the US, and that they are making a profit. I also think the provincial govenment made mistakes in the sales agreement that has left them with little leverage to control the toll rates. That said, I do use the 407 and find that I am willing to pay the cost as I hate driving in traffic.

I agree and you've made your decision based on what you want. I made my choice to never use it and I will never recommend that road to anyone.
I'm lucky enough that I hardly ever have to drive on the 400 highways.:)
