Just saw this thestar.com (http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/473082).
I thought they've been dead for a while now. Always remembered people (Americans) joking that "Buffalo is the armpit of America".
I didn't really care until I saw a comment left by a guy named licketysplit that made me chuckle. He must be a Toronto hater if he doesn't realize Toronto isn't a U.S. city (maybe economically/anecdotally but not geographically/politically).

Even with all the Canadians driving down to shop?
most of them are shopping at Niagara Falls NY...rarely downtown Buffalo
but some do venture to Galleria
but I think it's more on corporations leaving Buffalo

And that's basically all we do, go down for a day and shop then head home. This doesn't help any other sectors in Buffalo's economy.

What about go down there for chicken wings and catch Sabres games 'cuz we can't get Leafs tickets?

Western NY is one of those places that is in transition right now. They have lots most of their manufacturing jobs which were in the auto sector but they are slowly be replaced with jobs in other sectors. Niagara Falls, NY is economically dead and has been for years and years. They were hit hard by the loss of chemical manufacturing plants back in the 80's and early 90's. Those jobs are now just starting to be replaced albeit slowly. Their latest coup is they just announced that one of the old chemical plant sites is going to be used by a solar energy company to build solar panels. They are also in talks with several other alternative energy companies to relocate and build the area into an alternative energy center of excellence type of thing...
Lefteyeguy, check out the numbers of Canadian plates at the WG, it's on par with the Factory Outlets most times. ;) The cross border shopping is helping with their county budgets due to the sales tax that stays in the counties. Erie County (where Buffalo is located, NF, NY is actually in Niagara County)) is actually crediting the surge in cross border shopping with balancing their budget for this year and not having to cut services.
