Just wondering if anyone had the debit card cancelled over this past long weekend? I had mine, my father in law, cousin, wife (other bank account), and some friends debit card cancelled (TD, CIBC and PC)

Anyone else get their card cancelled too?

I had this happen to me a few years ago. They said they couldn't release details but had something to do with me using my card at a gas station in the middle of no where.

Just go to the bank with some ID and get a new one, simple as can be.

Got the new card but was wondering if there was more to it... Seems strange so many people I know had their card cancelled at the same time and they didn't shop at the same places as me... Just odd... Maybe its just in Thornhill...

had this happened to me before, said my card was compromised at a store by a skimmer. However i used my debit card at the store and was embarrased when it wasn't working and had no other way to pay for my items

I had this same thing that happened when i was processing this lady's purchase then she ran off. At first i thought she was a scam artist then she came back and bought everything in cash.

Happened to my wife a while back. Perhaps there is a store that all of your family went to that is suspected of skimming.

Fraud happens frequently for banks but it's odd to happen the same time as other people you know. The bank will also never give you a reason but 99% of the time when your card is canceled it's because someone was fraudulently accessing your account.

actually 99% of the time it's precautionary... the other 1% of the time is fradulent activity..

They took out $1000 out of my account that same way.
Most likely couldnt get your pin right or something and the card was killed.

i had this happen a couple of months ago when i was trying to buy movie tix at one of those self serve kiosks. after the first failure, i thought i may have entered my pin wrong. i tried again and it failed.

i called them up and they said my pin number was compromised. all i had to do was reset it. i went to the bank machine to change the pin and then all was good. strange but at least my account was not affected in any way.

this has happened to me 3 times this year. same story, i used my card at a location that has been identified as a possible card copying location, so the CS rep at TD told me that everyone who used their card at that location within a specific time period had their cards canceled.

i don't like to carry too much cash with me so i debit wherever possible. most recently i was in the states and when i came back i couldn't use my debit card. i figured it was because i withdrew money in the states (Vegas), however, when talking to them, they told me that someone incorrectly tried to enter my pin 14 times (their limit before locking it, not sure if its 14 consecutively, or throughout a certain time period)

as someone mentioned, its precautionary. its a bit of an annoyance yes, but at the same time, its better then having funds actually removed from your account.

Well, my home branch told me the card was duplicated and hence, they froze it...

BTW quick question, does the bank reverse charges on fraudlent debit card transactions??? Is it the same process as credit cards?

Just wondering if I should stick to CC or DC

Credit Cards are by far more secure, but you do get your money back from debit card fraud. I think the only exception is if you do something stupid like write your PIN on the card and they some how prove that.

I only use my debit at the bank machine, otherwise its credit card all the way (okay I sucker for that 3% cash discount at computer shops)
