It is not a statutory holiday, but more of a implied and accepted holiday by most employers. However, if your boss requires you to work, well.. you're SOOL.
edit: I also believe you don't get holiday pay if you work on Civic holiday =\

if you're working that day, be sure he's paying you 1.5x for being there and 1x for stat.
altogether 2.5x for that day.

I remember hearing that you should get a certain number of holidays per year.. and now with family day I heard that a lot of companies give 1 or the other to their employees.. that is, if you get family day off in February then you won't get Civic Holiday off and vice versa.. some companies do give both holidays..

Okay. So to reiterate:
Employer does not HAVE to give you day off + pay.
Employer does not HAVE to give you Holiday pay (1.5), but if he does kudos to him.

What are Ontario's public holidays
Ontario has nine public holidays:
* New Year's Day
* Family Day
* Good Friday
* Victoria Day
* Canada Day
* Labour Day
* Thanksgiving Day
* Christmas Day
* Boxing Day (December 26)
Some employers give their employees a holiday on Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, the first Monday in August, or Remembrance Day. However, these days are not public holidays under the ESA.

It's a government holiday it's not for the general workforce. No special rules apply unless you are in a public office type job. If you aren't it is totally up to the discretion of your employer to give you the day off with or without pay. If you are required to work it's only 1x regular pay unless you work in government.

The August holiday is not officially a statutory holiday (at least in Ontario). However, the vast majority of employers do treat it the same way as the other official statutory holidays.
Several years back while in college I worked for a company through an employment agency. All of us working for the agency were told we had to work the civic holiday although the rest of the company had the day off. This is when I first found out about it not being an "official" stat. holiday. Needless to say most people were not happy. To try to make people less upset about having to work that day, the boss said that many people did not have the day off. The company assumed that the building would operate on the Civic Holiday as it did every other day and made no special arrangements for those from the agency that had to work. The ONLY thing that actually made working that day worthwhile was the fact that the building had their access points programmed as if it was a weekend. We could not enter the building without a special access pass. So, the day supervisor (also from the agency) called the centre supervisor at home. She had to come in on her *holiday* to let us in the building. The air conditioning was off because it was programmed as a weekend and the temperature on the 5th floor quickly rose to a level that required everyone to be sent home. That is my one and only experience of being required to work on the August Civic holiday.

It is a Statuary Holiday in BC with Banks closed. Are banks opened in Ontario?

Banks are closed in Ontario. Most businesses are closed and give their employees the day off. There are a few however, that use the fact that it isn't an official Statutory holiday and don't give them the day off.

Some call it Simcoe Day. Others a civic holiday. Whatever you choose to label it, most are just glad to get it.
Welcome to the dog days of August and the long holiday weekend that goes with it. In Toronto, it's named after the man who was the first Lt. Gov. of Ontario, John Graves Simcoe.
None of which may matter much to you, but you'll take the time off it brings. It promises to be a busy weekend filled with Caribana and a host of other events. But if you're not going to the big blowout what else can you do? Plenty. Because this isn't a federal stat, most stores and malls will stay open on the holiday Monday, leaving you a day off and a place to spend money.
Here's a look at what's open and closed.
Saturday and Sunday
It's business as usual, with stores, supermarkets and other services you can normally access on any weekend available everywhere.
Monday, August 4th
Open
Most grocery stores and supermarkets,
Malls,
Most LCBO/Beer Stores.
Closed
Banks,
Government offices,
Libraries,
No mail delivery,
T.T.C. and GO on holiday schedule.
For Ontario...

Don't assume that government has it off at all. When the holiday first came in here (AB) no one in the Fed. gov't got it off. Unless it's put in the National contracts (meaning everyone in every province has the stat) then they don't get it off, it's just a regular working day. Maybe they have sorted it since I worked there, but because we also had Family Day, we couldn't have the Aug. holiday (although posties could choose which of the two they wanted to work, no one else had that option).

I don't like that commercial - it makes fun of the name Simcoe when it comes from Lord Simcoe, not a lake. It relays a wrong history, (most kids today wouldn't even know the difference though) although in a comical way. But I don't like it. :)

It's Natal Day in NS and wonder why the rest of the country call it Civic day and we call it Natal day but...guess since I moved to ON I should refer to it as Civic day vs Natal day.
