hi, I m gonna start my 1st yr at Uoft, I noticed that there are only 24 spaces in each 1st year seminar section. I m wondering how ppl could get in there. btw, INX199Y1 is my fave course, and I found there were only 3 out of 24 spaces available prior to my start time.... how this could possibly happen if uoft wants ppl to take that course....
do you guys have the same experience? thx

I heard the seminar spaces went like hot cakes. The first-year seminars are a new idea, so it'll be a few years before they iron out the kinks. Obviously the level of interest was far higher than anticipated.

I have no problem with the limited space, but their system is truly ****ed up. Why not have all students from the department start at the same time (Social Science, Life Science, Humanities)?
Atleast then it gives opritunities for ALL the students to have an equal chance of being enrolled in classes of interest (whether a specific calculus lecture or first year seminar) rather then having a system based on randomness. And really, I think its absolutely stupid to allow 'chance' to determine a students year.
Cause how is it fair to students who had start times at around 3 to be sitting there and waiting (cant even log on and see what courses are available) for up to 9 hours while students are allowed to pick at 6 (or 7?) am? Leaving only seven spots for life science students wanting social science seminars (while some life science students started as early as 1, whereas others started as late as 3:30).
University of Toronto is considered a top university in North America, yet can't afford a capable server? I find that a bit odd.

Naw man. The server stress is rediculous (especially with the 50,000 students (i think) at u of t).
I am sure Guelph has good servers, and it got shut down because everyone decided to see their marks at the same time. Of course they got it fixed, but with a good percentage of 17,000 people wanting to see encypted information, things can get tight.

totally agreed, uoft staffs are not poor, they're just stupid and/or lazy. UofT is considered as one of the richest universities in Canada, they rob tons of money from international student. in my case, my tuition fee is 4 times as much as domestic students'.... :( I think they gotta improve their way of courses selecting.

for first year seminars, spaces are divided across different streams (eg life science: 7 spaces.. social sci:7..etc) . sometime in august the remaining spaces from different streams (if any) will be open to all student.

to be fair, that would be the case with any university, not just u of t.
even elsewhere in the world, international students typically pay significantly more. i.e. in various parts of europe, domestic students may not pay tuition at all, where as the cost for an international student will obviously be pretty significant.

they dont make money off international students. it actually costs that much to educate a student. candian students are subsidized by the government.
if a K-12 education costs around 9k a year for non canadians, what universities charge int'l students is more than fair

If they allowed everyone to access ROSI at the same time, courses would fill up in under a minute and it'd be just as much of a lottery. The only kids getting all their choices would be the CS guys writing scripts to fill out the forms for them.

1. Get over it - by the end of your first year you will realize how little it mattered that you didn't get into that class.
2. Get use to it - you will have the same problem when trying to get into smaller classes in your second, third, and any other year.
Also, as already mentioned - keep checking. A spot may open up.

Correction, the remaining spaces were open this morning at 6AM.
^- The only day I'm grateful my work shift forces me to get up at 5AM, so that I'd be awake to sign up for first year seminars! I checked this morning at 6AM and there were still some spaces available for the general first year seminars (the one I wanted to take had 8 spaces left).
What ubn123 is referring to with regards to the remaining spaces being opened in August, should be the ones that are restricted to the colleges that you are part of; otherwise it was this morning at 6AM.

After living and going to school in Canada for a year you're no longer considered an international student and pay domestic rates. The last time I checked anyways.

There are limited numbers of teachers, limited number of rooms, limited numbers of hours in the day. Some profs don't want to teach a class of 300; some don't want to teach on Fridays, some don't want to teach first years, some don't want to teach two courses back to back. Seminars are not meant to teach large numbers of students. They're meant to be small which is why there can't be 300 spaces available.
When you apply to UofT, you know its a big school for Arts and Science ... its one of the main reasons I chose to study elsewhere.
