is having classes every day of the week except weekends normal for a first year?

no. you should have a max of 3 days of classes a week.

Kinda depends what program you're in. How many hours of class do you have? I have 15 hours of class each week and I fit them in 4 days comfortably.

No, you should always have fridays off.

Depends on the university. When I was first year, I had 5 days of classes. Many first year courses are more spread out (like 1 hour class on Monday, Wednesday, Friday,1 hour tutorial on Tuesday, lab on Thursday, etc). It's meant to keep you involved so you don't learn bad habits in the first year.

It wasn't until 2nd year when I started getting a day off per week.

No, you should always have fridays off.

How do you accomplish this? Even 4th year at UofT, Fridays were Tutorial day. 90% of my classes had the tutorial occur on the Friday.

If you interpet as "should laways have fridays off" as being "fridays are skip days" then so be it.

Wow, that sucks.

I had 6 courses last semsters in 2 days only. Tues/thurs.

Profs don't want to teach on Mon... day after weekends, wed... mid week, fri ... end of week (reserved for exams mostly).

I couldn't get my classes on mon/wed even if I tried.

It saves me 2 hrs + commuting each day I'm not at school .. thank you!

UofT BBA btw.

Friday off sounds about right. However, its likely that you have to stay a little longer ie. after 6 on one of the 4 days.

Depends entirely on the program. When I was at UTSC for management, I remember my schedule for a few semester consisted of monday and friday off. It was awesome. :D

Yes. Be glad that you don't have weekend classes or tutorials.

WTF do you think university or college is, a freakin country club? Or working for the government?

fridays at school are awful. so are mondays.

I think it depends entirely on your university and the program your in. We get Fridays off in the Asper School of Business, but for other programs in my university I believe it's common that you would fill your schedule to have classes everyday.

lol, I'm yet to hear of a university that has weekend courses. Having courses only 3-4 days of the week doesn't mean you have things easy anyways. The majority of work in univeristy is done outside of class, so your going to be doing school work more than just those 3 days your in class.

Days of classes is a useless metric in university because your classes can be scheduled all throughout the day. How many hours a week of class time do you have? It it's less than 20 and you didn't get a day off you just didn't plan your timetable right.

Depends how many classes you per day.
How many hours per day?
Program?
Year?
University?

LALALa.

A friend of mine in the same program has class only on Tuesdays and Thursday whereas I have Monday-Thursday. Then there are engineers with 300000 hours of class.

I had CS tutorials Sunday afternoons and evenings, and EE tutorials Saturday mornings. Nothing earth-shattering.

Damn you people in business!
I haven't had a day off yet, close, but theres always a class that is only offered T/Thur that I have to take.

Sometimes, it's about luck of how your university decides to schedule the classes too. I was lucky enough that my schedule worked out. Sometimes, they might only be one offering for a specific class.

So even if it's "normal", you might be lucky or unlucky enough to have Friday off.

Buddy of mine is going into first year English at York and has a timetable with a 3hr gap in the afternoon, every single day. Sometime your schedule just sucks.

For us engineers, yeah, but artscis don't usually have over 20hrs of week in class.

York atkinson programs regularly have weekend courses. Some weekday courses have exams on weekends as well.

Well I think Atkinson is the exception considering it was originally designed to be a part-time business school program designed for people who were already working and wanted to complete their degree during their off-days or when their done work. That's why a majority of Atkinson classes are held during late afternoons to evenings as well as weekends.

I know, but it's still a popular business program for full-time students so might as well mention it so people can watch out for it.

5 days a week isn't horrible for first year..sometimes it just works out that way.

Some schools definitely have Saturday labs for science/engineering students (McMaster does for sure), and some also schedule tests on Saturdays. It sucks, but with limited facilities and skyrocketing enrolment, they have to do something to accomodate students.

As for having a day of classes off...yeah, this is VERY program-dependent. Arts students can swing it much more frequently than science/engineering students - I did a science undergrad, and I never had a day off.

this really depends. I've had class everyday for my first year but that was due to the timing of all the courses I wanted to take.

In 2nd year, I had only Friday's off. Its really dependent on whatever courses your taking and program.

Example/ Your in science and you have labs. They may not occur every week, but its a 3hr time slot that may land on an empty day.

Never had a day off (in science) but I'm hoping for one this year. Mac does Saturday labs, tests, exams and presentations but no classes that I've ever heard of.

Our oldest picked his timetable block yesterday for Niagara College Niagara Culinary Institute and he has 21 hrs of class a week. He is done at 3:30 on Tuesday's , off Wednesday and not in until 3:30 on Thursdays for 3 hrs of class. He's in first thing on Friday mornings and done by 1:30. :cheesygri

One should never take classes on Fridays unless one is in Engineering. That is ironclad.

fewer classes is not necessarily less work. some just pile u with craplot of reading,
FT engineering = 5 days of classes, if not then you should take a closer look @ ur uni

Typically I go to school M-F, if I pick up a extra class, it's usually on Sat.

MWF, are usually my lectures, and TR are labs and tutorials.

Having schools 5 days a week is typically normal, depending on your program of course. The sciences will tend to have more intensive schedules (with lectures, labs, tutorials, etc.) but if you have the option of choosing your own courses/timeslots, then you can sometimes fit a day off :).

expect above 30hr/week in 1st yr. Waterloo pre-optometry, architecture, or engineering. I never had a Friday off until my last term of mechanical eng. I've also heard 1st yr. architect students will sleep and shower in their studio building.

1st n 2nd yr i always had 5 days of classes... cause certain classes were always only offered MWF n others were only TTh... which occasional nite class.

but considering i was in anothe city neway it wasn't a big deal... altho after 1st term hving classes on fri afternoon, i always tried to make my schedule so that i finish on fri as early as possible.
i actually had a term that i stuck 5 courses in 2 days... man.. that kinda sucked... especially wen u got 3 midterms on 1 day =/

had terms with 3 days of classes it was better...

i normally nvr go 2 tutorial so it's about 15hrs/wk...

but seriously.. it doesn't really matter in uni... even tho i take 5 courses/term.. during 1 term i only had 6 hrs of class /wk cuz man.. some profs really suk bad... but usually it's 9-12hrs of classes for me

Other engineers don't occasionally sleep and shower in their building? Or drink? At the national meets, UVic always shows up to be the most hardcore... ;-)
