What's the freshest and bestest this year? How bout them asian language courses? discuss...
I'll offer my opinions:
ANT100 = BAD
ARC132 = BAD
GGR252 = BAD (marks, but next to 0 workload)

I always hear ECO100/105, but availability is really minimal, which sux for us cuz we can't add the course till the artscis' are done. I heard Intro to Mgmt at utsc is real easy with lecture videos posted online.

Why is ANT100 bad?
Too much reading, too much effort, too boring of content, too large class size etc... That's what I've heard.

Don't ever take those stupid memorization/reading/multiple choice type exams such as ANT/SOC. These courses are so retardely tested.
Yea, you can take utsc courses. I know you can take the intro to mgmt, cuz couple guys last year took it.

Yeah, reading/memorization is definitely not something I want to do. I've crossed out ANT/SOC/PSY already.
Doesn't ECO require a lot of memorization though?
What did you take for electives?
How did your friends like mgmt?

I heard really good results with ECO. I'd first go for that if available, then prolly take mgmt. I think they did good, I can't remember. I just remember the part about not having to go to lectures and just go there for the tests/exams. Since its an intro course, I'm sure its dead easy, atleast to the engineer.

Economics for Non-specialists (can't remember if it's ECO100 or 105) is a walk in the park, if you can fit it in your engineering timetable.

Check out the HPS courses (history of science). Lots of HSS courses that won't bore you to death, though not all are offered every year.

But don't you have to write essays? I'm trying to avoid ALL essays if I can, I heard SOC101 doesn't have any essays.. just two multiple choice tests?

There are essays but honestly I prefer a course that interests me even if the workload is little more than one that doesn't. As for SOC101, I have heard the same thing as you but multiple choice can be harder than an essay, IMO. Especially in sociology where there are 100s of pages you need to basically have memorized.

I'm good with short-term memorization haha so I don't mind too much
anyone know anything about TRN200? looks really interesting but again wondering what the assignments are
edit: Oh also does anyone know the exact process of how we actually sign up for an arts sci course (i.e. the steps we need to take in rosi)? I've never done it before and I want to be able to do it as soon as the site goes live so I can get my spot in lol

Beware of enrollment controls on courses offered by specific colleges. They are often totally restricted to students in certain programs.
The enrollment process is simple, go to the Course Enrolment tab of ROSI, and under manage courses input the course code and session code. In advance, check which times are available under "View Timetable/Spaces" and decide which section you want so you can be quick on the trigger on the 13th.

I had GGR216 lined up but they aren't offering it this year so bad luck.
I also have the HPS course "Technology in the Modern World" or something but am wary of it.
I'm gonna try and get into the ECO100/105 (which should I take again?) and if not, I'll take WDW260 (Org Behavioiur) and then I need to think of another course as well.
Edit: I originally had these courses planned out on Magellan, but now I will need to change it. Perhaps I will drop the APS and GGR and take the ECO course this year, then move WDW260 and HPS202 to 4th year
CS3F: WDW260H1
CS3S: GGR216H1
CS4F: HPS202H1

I also advise against taking soc101. You'll have 3 books to read entirely by the end of the year. 3 tests that make up 50% and final which is 50%.

Stupid Question here, but here it goes:
I am currently on PEY,
and I want to take a course during the spring term.
I had fulfilled my HSS course requirements, what's the difference between CS and HSS courses?
and what CS course do u guys recommend taking, preferably a night class.
Is MGT120 (accounting) or any astronomy course considered a CS course?
Thanks!

hey yup =). CHEM 1T0!
my second sem schedule looks ghastly because of che354 which eats up my time till 7-8pm on three nights out of 5. i saw the ASSU anticalendar and past exams, but was hoping for any insight. to me, it looks similar to the required gr11 religion course (i'm a catholic hs grad). has anyone also heard of HPS318 and RLG232? on such a limited schedule, i'm desperate... i'm pretty much stuck to electives that are on Thursday nights after 5pm. the joys of chemeng...
as well, i've heard from upper years that taking two separate half year courses is better than a full year course because it will weigh less for your gpa (in the event that you do bad). of course that would mean having to take two exams.

I took GGR2##, Geography of Canada. Pretty easy, not much workload (just a few papers, pretty easy if you did alright in High School english) ended up with an above average, but mediocre mark.
Also took PHL2##, Ethics. Was a summer course, kinda alright typical readings and write a few papers. Similar work load as Geography of Canada similar marks.
Looking to hopefully take ECO100 for my 4th year.

Why is ANT100 bad?
took it last year...course final average was C-...which is pretty low...wasn't bell curved at all...
the material is intrinsically boring...and the profs try...but it doesn't help...who really cares why everybody wants to keep their lawns green?
basically for multiple choice, they'll ask for really small facts like those lil snippets you read in your textbook...
if u can memorize a phonebook of useless facts...then ant100 is the subject for you...
needless to say, it was my lowest mark that year...but i guess partly due to the fact that i valued my engineering courses more...and put in waay more effort on those....i think i only attended like about half the ant100 lectures...SOO BORING =p

Ya, I'm wondering if it is a good idea to take ECO100 in third year ECE... most people I know are taking it in 4th year or have taken it in 4th year and I don't understand why...
Also, it seems that the only section for this course that I can attend is the MWF12-1 lecture section...
Edit:
Seems I may have a few options..
HPS202 in the Fall + WDW260 in the Winter
or
ECO100 for the year..
Also, I wanted to know that if for example, http://www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca/ofr/timetable/winter/wdw.html on that website, there is no Tutorial or Practical listed, does that mean the course doesn't have such classes?

I also took ANT100. Run away. Run as far as you can.
Its very easy to get a decent mark, its impossible to get a good mark. I know several people for whom this course wrecked their 4.0
If you do decide to take this course, don't even bother with the lectures. The real way to study for this course is just get a load of the past exams and just go through them with a group of your friends. They recycle the questions a lot.
Doing this will get you a 70 (its what I got). My friends who actually went to most classes got a 77-80 (these are the 4.0 crowd, i'm more in the 2.8 range, so 70 is fine with me).
Courses I'm looking at that seem at least slightly interesting are as follows:
ARC131/132/231/231
CLA204/230/232
ECO100
GGR252
HPS210/211/307
JGE347/348
PHL100/232/271 (100 taught by kingwell is apparently excellent)
Anyone have any thoughts on these? I think I'm leaning toward PHL100, but have by no means decided yet.

I need to decide between
GGR252 Winter term Thursday 5-7
or
JGI216 Winter term Friday 10-12
To be honest, I'd rather finish earlier on Thursday and have class on Friday morning.
Looking at the courses though, I heard GGR252 (Marketing Geo) is very very easy, but I think I would be more interested in JGI216 (Urbanization and Global Change)... I've also heard that the prof for JGI216 is hot :D

Looking at the courses though, I heard GGR252 (Marketing Geo) is very very easy, but I think I would be more interested in JGI216 (Urbanization and Global Change)... I've also heard that the prof for JGI216 is hot :D
Anyone have experiences with JGI or GGR or both?
I did GGR, don't do it. Run very far away. Very little work, but very low marks. It's as if they automatically subtract 20 points after they mark your work.

I haven't taken that course, but from what I've heard (albeit only from one person, so don't take this as gospel), its not that great either.
You *could* choose the S course later, but remember: most others will have chosen it now and lots of courses will have filled up.

can anyone confirm this?
i got this confirmed by a friend in life sci (they had restrictions lifted on friday.... probably why its full already)

I say go with the HPS, from when I took it, you had one midterm (short answer, multiple choice), one essay (book review), attendance/participation marks in tutorial, and the final (which is the same as the midterm, but with an added essay question).

Don't ever take those stupid memorization/reading/multiple choice type exams such as ANT/SOC. These courses are so retardely tested.
Yea, you can take utsc courses. I know you can take the intro to mgmt, cuz couple guys last year took it.
Coming from scarborough and taken the intro to management course I can tell you it is pretty much a memorization course as well. Good luck if you think that none of the "Introduction to...." or any other year one courses will not be based on memorization.

Hopefully they only cancelled the tutorials because the course wasn't supposed to have them in the first place...

I took GGR246.
Pretty easy course, interesting prof. whom loves to talk about his background and heritage. Just basically typical readings + papers style course.
Course work is not heavy given you are reasonably adept in reading and formulating your ideas into words. With minimal effort, I was able to get a pretty decent above average mark (I'm an average student in Engineering courses).

I'd go for economics... this year there were still still ~60 spots left in ECO105 before enrollment priority was lifted on August 8th - all you had to do was log in to ROSI at 12AM and take a spot ASAP.

I think it might be game over for ECO100 and 105 since both of their 5xxx sections (that are usually open to engineers) are full according to ROSI.
Also, enrollment restrictions are lifted at 6:00am according to the undergrad website.

Just in case, for some horrible reason, someone is still considering taking ANT100 after reading this thread:
HOLY **** RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.
I wasted probably 100 hours (50 hours of lecture alone..) of my life on this course. The 1st half of the course is murder. The second half is somewhat interesting, but that's just so that it makes people second guess dropping this POS Y course before that last day to drop.. Then the 2nd midterm and final kick you square in the groin..
But, because of this course, I now know the following things:
1. What a 'Gibbons' is.
2. What a 'Tarsier' is.
3. The difference between an aspirated 'p' and an unaspirated 'p'.
Google those three things and you now have no reason to take the course!
But, if you are STILL considering the course - no one can help you. Just take it you ArtSci in disguise.

#1) I don't know if this tutorial will even fit in my timetable if it has a section
#2) Cancelled tutorials --> Cancelled Course?
1) Look at the times for the tutorials by checking on ROSI.
2) No, this course will NOT be cancelled EVER, because Prof. Swales need it to sell his textbooks and make a living.
EDIT: My bad, it looks really weird for GGR252. No idea what's going on.

I took Intro to Roman History and Latin & Greek in Scientific Terminology.
The Roman history course was OK. But your experience will vary depending on your instructor and your interest in the material. I had to write two essays, do a midterm, and write a final exam. There was a lot of reading, but nothing I couldn't manage. I'd say it was a pretty easy course, in my case.
The Latin & Greek course was great! It really helps if you have a background in either language from high school. There was a lot of 'memorization' - literally hundreds and hundreds of words, stems, roots, whatever. I'm personally interested in this stuff, so I didn't mind it at all. The workload (besides the memorizing) was pretty light. One midterm, one paper, and a final exam.
Believe me, your instructor in arts courses makes much more of a difference than your instructor in engineering courses!

My hopes of taking a course that actually "interests" me, heh, no chance in hell. I'm going to get up at 6AM, just put myself on the waitlist, ugh. Otherwise, I'll just see what I get. I don't get why we are bottom-feeders, we don't get to take...courses...that....actually...interest...us.
Seriously, picking Engineering was a big mistake. I was told about how flexible the program is, if anything it's really one-dimensional. All the courses are just 'do the following from the textbook' types of courses, we get limited amounts/choices of electives to boot. Big, big, mistake.

INI115 = OMG AWFUL, I thought I would just watch movies. They make it much more complicated.
GLG103 is a pretty good course, requires a lot of memorization (word for word response).
GGR252 is by far the best, the course load is weak and you can go into the finals with 90s if you write two good reports (Just buy previous years reports and write it with the ideas that got them amazing marks). Finals is always similar too, same general question worded differently.
For EE Student, you are allowed one Engineering Elective. I took MIE443 (Mechatronics, requires ECE334 pre-req) and this is by far one of the easiest and fun course I ever took. No midterms, no finals. 3 reports about robots you build for competition (RoboCan<--push cans out of circle, RoboPong<--hit ball to opponents site, RoboGolf<--pick up ball and drop in a hole in the middle). Teams are groups of 3, so if you can get 2 other students who are slackers and like an easy mark thats a course for you. Course avg = A-
