Can't say I paid the cheapest, but I had really good service at Roadsport Honda with Chili when I bought my Si back in November.
Great guy to deal with, just give us keys to test drives without coming along. No pressure on getting a sales. No extra bullcrap.

Same situation, I'm looking for a Si (sedan) for my wife. We tested the regular Civic with the 1.8 l engine, the Acura CSX with the 2.0, and the Civic Si, liked the Civic Si the best.
Some problems we need to look into:
* Availability: Some Dealers don't have the Si sedan at all, and the ones they have, are not the color we want
* Price: Lots of resistance to talk about discounts!! Are these guys alergic to deals? The salesman last night told us "Right now our sales are 24% higher than last year... so you are looking at paying full MSRP"
* 2009 coming out soon: new Civic Si gets new colors, new bumpers, additional fog lights, and new design for the wheels. Is it worth to wait another 5-6 weeks? We could get any color we want. Unfortunately, interest rates will be higher...
Will the MSRP be adjusted for 2009, based on the strong currency exchange? Honda pricing is out of whack... the cars (made in Alliston Ontario) are 25% more expensive here, than in the USA... on top, the USA customer pays $650 freight, and we pay $1300... does that make sense?
Just because of price, we are now considering the Corolla XRS... less HP, less handling, less style, but $5,000 cheaper (MSRP)

No it makes no sense, and it's not just Honda that does it. I'm pretty sure it's the same with Chrysler. E.g. Walk into a Brampton Chrysler dealer and freight is probably higher on an LX car than it is in California
It's called a scam operation, and rest assured all the manufacturers are in on it
There's gouging on the price, gouging on freight and then the crap dealer tactics like "you pay MSRP". If you get another salesperson telling you that you have to pay MSRP tell him/her "F$*@ you" straight to their face and walk out. These sons of b*#@!es need to start realising people aren't going to just pay MSRP when they tell them to.
If you can get a good loan or if you're buying the car outright, just buy it in the US and call it a day. You'll save tons and won't have to deal with ******** dealer tactics here. You won't only be paying under US MSRP, you'll also probably be paying under invoice there as well.

Wow that is a lot cheaper. But, the current XRS blows. The older one was better. Toyota likes to continually worsen their cars and make them more and more mundane.
Note that I wouldn't recommend either the Si or the XRS at all, but I'm not going to bother getting into that discussion as it seems you're pretty set on "sticking with a Civic, Corolla".

Points well taken, you are certainly calling it as it is - gouging
Some background - my wife's old car, a Corolla, died suddenly and with no explanation: the transmission failed at only 142,000 kms. We are not prepared (financially) to buy another car. We have to go finance.
If we had the money ready, we'd be shopping in the USA. But as I said, we have to finance the car.
Because of the bad experience with the Corolla needing a transmission so quickly, we don't feel like buying Toyota again (ever again) ... but we may have to... just look at the MSRPs:
XRS - Manual Transmission - $21,655
Civic Si - Man Transmission - $26,680

Call up Chili at Roadsport Honda in Scarborough, that's who I got my 08 Si from in November. He offered excellent service, let us take the car out on our own for a good 40 minutes, not very pushy after the test drive after I told him I wanted to try out the competitors before making a decision.
I seriously don't see how there's no room on the Si, if it was 2006 when it first came out, you had to go on a waiting list, but today, they should have plenty of stock. And there hasn't been that many Si sedans on the road even on the 8thcivic forums.
The change over doesn't offer a whole lot other than minor cosmetic fix, and there aren't that many issues with the Si in the first place for the 09s to "fix". So if you're financing or leasing, it's probably better just snap up the 08. If you're paying cash, wait for 09 and buy from the US. :D

What about this problems with the Si?
This is the Honda technical bulletin regarding defective 3rd gear in the Si manual transmission.
http://www.tleone.com/A08-020.pdf
Cars affected include:
2007 Civic Si 4-Door: ALL
2008 Civic Si 4-Door: From VIN 2HGFA555.8H700001 thru 2HGFA555.8H702465
Given my recent experience, I can't take another transmission problem.

due to the si's engine nature, you may have more power with the honda accord on the low end grunt. Or even an imprezza.

I don't think that'll be "fixed" in the 09, the 3rd gear problem has been around since like 2002 with the RSX Type S. And it seems to be a problem that develops over time. With the TSB available now, at least you don't have to argue with the stealership to get it fixed.

Yeah the gear just pops out at random, puts you in neutral, lol. I've heard of the problem (and there are videos on YouTube) and it's even had television news coverage, but I'm not sure if the fix fully/properly fixed it or not (perhaps someone else will chime in about that).
If there's only certain VIN for 08 on that list, it's very unlikely that you would buy a brand new car falling in that VIN range. If there are any cars with those VINs sitting in dealer lots not sold, the dealer would perform the TSB as part of the PDI, I would imagine. Again though I have no idea whether the fix is permanent/proper or not.
Out of curiosity, the trans in the Corolla was that a manual or auto trans that failed? I'm surprised if it's a manual trans that required replacing. However I'm sure I'm nowhere near as surprised as the people on this forum that will tell you you're trolling because there's no such thing as problems with Toyotas

From the consensus on the civic forums, the fix works, whether it's permanent or not, only time will tell.

I should create a new posting about the Corolla for the reference of fellow members ... it was a 5-sp MANUAL transmission. Car serviced at the dealer for as long as I had it... transmission fluid changed on schedule, etc.
During the diagnostic, the service advisor hinted that it might be abuse, or that my wife didn't know how to drive manual transmission properly...
Let's just say that I have been driving manual since I was 17 y.o., and my wife drives better than me... previous car was manual, never had a problem in 10 years...
Only issue: wife is the second owner... so the service advisor blamed the issue on the first owner's abuse...
