I took the info concerning the iPhone. I am presently with Fido without contract. I explained the salesman that I was interested to buy the iPhone 3G with a 3 years contract, with my actual fixed rate, WITHOUT DATA, because I want to only use the Wi-Fi spot.
The problem is that the salesman says I must take the DATA cause even if the 3G service is deactivated on the iphone, and I try using the WI-FI installed at home, it won’t work. Fido will be the network connecting to my iphone automatically( not the 3G because I desactivate it on the iPhone), and it’d be very expensive. How could I be completely sure that Intenet works with the WI-FI only and not with the 3G service or Fido to avoid extreme monthly bills.
Is there any way on the iPhone to be complety sure that the Fido network will not run!
Thank you!
Frank

I am curious as well. I was told (by Fido iphone salesperson) on opening day that the phone automatically chooses between edge(?) and wifi and that edge can't be deactivated. Therefore a data plan is strongly recommended.
I've done a google search but I can't find anything about deactivating edge and ONLY being able to use wifi. Anyone know if there is a hack yet?

This is based on what I have read up:

For 3G:
1) You need to call your provider and have them block 3G access from their end. People sign up and get the iPhone (without Data) and a few days later, called Rogers and said to block Data on their phone.

2) You need to disable 3G on the iPhone itself too

EDGE & WIFI
1) No you can't "disable" EDGE but you need to configure it for it to work.
Just remove any config info if it has any.

2) Blocking 3G/EDGE does not affect the WiFi

You can never be "sure" since it really depends on if the provider blocked their end properly. I'm not sure if there is a way to test this.

Note this is all based on Rogers Customers. Fido is the same company but I'm not sure if their policies are completely the same.

Thanks but if someone know how to test Edge even if the provider at the phone told you that they blocked it I will be glad!

I actually cant find anywhere that allows you to modify the EDGE setup.

If you don't want to use data, phone up and disable it, i don't think you can block edge data from your phone, only through rogers.

You can see whether you have edge enabled by the presences of the edge icon which is located on the right of the reception bars and carrier name at the top left corner.

You can call Rogers/Fido to disable data for your iPhone and you will be able to use only wifi.
