Question about Registration and Admin fee when buying car

When im buying a car, I was wondering what these fees do.

I understand PDI/Freight, fuel tax, A/c tax is standard. but how come when purchasing a car, they charge you 499$ for registration/security and 399 for admin fee.

As I'm already assessed a 75$ finance charge on top of it. How come I have to pay 499+399 more?

I'm not sure what the "registration/security" is? Registration is like your plates and sticker, no? That's nowhere near $500 and varies by person because of your birthdate. I really don't know what's going on there :confused:

$399 for admin is ridiculous. Lots of people refuse to pay admin and that's what I would do in this case. Sometimes admin isn't so high, but still it's a ******** charge--you should definitely refuse that or walk out.

Those extra charges are just extra ways for them to make money. No new car dealership hits you with fees like that. Only those slimey used car lots.

Most new car dealerships stick a $299-349ish administration fee on things... doesn't make it an honest practice, but they do do it...

Dude, do things by your rules. Not a car dealer's.

As everyone said- it's just a cash grab. Refuse it or leave if you don't feel like giving away more money.

fyi, these two fees are from a new dealership and pretty much all of them that i got a quote for included these two fees.

and wheel locks too! i better get them to give it to me for free.

Often, window etching is included with admin fees. They will give you a song and dance about why window etching is a good idea, and how if your car is stolen, you will get $5000 toward a new car.

It's still not a good deal.

When negotiating, work with final, before tax numbers. GST and PST are added at the end, but purchase price, gas tax, air tax, and any admin fees are part of the number you're negotiating. Don't let them break those numbers out.

It doesn't matter if you're buying, financing, or leasing. Negotiate the purchase price only. The financing details will work themselves out by formulas.

Don't make it adversarial. Just state your offer, state your reasons for the offer, and see what happens. They may have very good reasons why your offer is too low. That's a judgment call you have to make.

If they insist on a $300 admin fee, immediately remove $300 from your offer. Call it your admin fee to the dealership for wasting your time. They'll get the idea. ;)

If they let you walk away, you couldn't buy the car for that price. Either come back with more money next time, or move on to your next dealership, or change target vehicles entirely.

Its like the ridiculous connection fee, disconnection fee, etc that other places charge. But that amount is pretty ridiculous.

If you pay it, they'll probably all go out for drinks after with that 'fee'.

I've bought new cars from 4 different manufactuers over the years and have never seen any fees other than freight and pdi and the a/c tax.

This issue of dealerships charging fees has been brought up over and over again and every single time, people are falling for it by even discussing about it. The buyer must focus on OTD ( including tax and interest rate) price and nothing else. Anything else is make-believe.

I think there is an extra tax you pay on SUVs and trucks now in this gay province but I havent bought anything here since they brought that stuff out.

well you can get the Dealer's answer which is they're a fee to cover the over head of selling you a vehicle i.e. that 'free' coffee your drinking and all those photocopies they make of the forms, etc. the real answer is that they're just another cash grab for them to make more money off of your purchase. as was already suggested just worry about the on the road price and use a service like the APA to bargain from a stronger position.

window etching is another scam that dealers will insist you must purchase. just say no and walk out if you feel like you're being pushed around.

how about fuel tax?

can't escape that one as that is charged by the government with the amount depending on the vehicle class.
