Pretty good, considering it comes with Vista Home Premium. Can't build a system of your own with Vista for this price, even if you get the cheapest possible motherboard and a used Q6600.

this must be a price error, was the door crasher yesterday for 549...

just ordered single units three times...one for parents, one to replace my office x2-3800 (previous dod deal at only like $100 less), and one to replace an aging digital entertainment center z-545 which is p4-3ghz based...

hopefully they go through...

was 20 units, now down to 13 within minutes...funny how rfd effect is on even at 4am.

A really nice computer! I have something similar (HP M9040n) that I paid $650.00.

It comes with TV Tuner and a remote. The TV tuner alone is worth $100, it is the Hauppauge 1800.

The only negative is the Nvidia 8400 GS which is a bit weak but could be replaced with a stronger PSU and better graphic card.

BTW, it is a PRICING ERROR! If you go to the BB doorcrasher page, it is supposed to be selling for $549.99. They got yesterday's computer which was selling for $449.99 mixed up with this one.

SSD are the way to go now =P Just wating for the price to drop lol

SSD is far from mainstream right now and pretty much only used in netbooks. If you are waiting for a price drop, OCZ recently released some MLC SSD drives that are a lot cheaper than SLC SSD drives.

This deal is burning hot... only question is if BB will honor their price error (never have in the past... unless you do in store pickup and do pickup before they notice, which is not possible in this case).

To serve as a media centre, 8400CS is fine ... It supports H.264 hardware acceleration. If I remember correctly, the '2nd' generation also support VC-1 too.

The cost is good but if anyone who wants to game with this, it's not good for gaming.

It's a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS, it cannot handle a lot of new games nor slighty older games on high settings.

The power supply is only 300 Watts which makes it impossible to just upgrade the video card to 8800gt. The higher end cards need atleast 400-500watts average.

The quad is good but the ram and motherboard is not meant for overclocking at all (which is obvious).

But yeah, good price for a media center PC.

Nice price for those who got it...I was looking at it yesterday comparing it to the brand new a6345f Quad core system that I picked up last week from the Staples HP desktop clearance sale for $497. It's fairly similar except that this has the 8400 GS vs the onboard Intel, 500 GB vs. 400 GB and that it's a media centre PC.

But if you prefer a brand new system over the refurb then the a6345f is probably a better deal for you...

I wonder if the Q6600 CPU is the older B3 or the newer G0.

Guessing this has at least 3xDIMM slots.

Upgrade limited if only 1xPCI & 1xPCIe slots available for expansion.

Includes a NTSC/ATSC tuner.

Every time a deal on an HP/Compaq/Acer/Whatever desktop comes up there's always the same litany of complaints...
1. Can't game with that vga card
2. Power supply won't support upgrades
3. Can't overclock RAM, CPU, etc...
4. Not enough slots, can't SLI, etc...

I mean COME ON. It's a Q6600 system for under $500, what do you expect? Naked women peeling you grapes?

This is a tier-1 integrated solution. It will always be on-board or baseline-line vga, it will always have a "just enough" PSU, and the RAM/CPU/MB will all be designed to work as-is without extra slots (beyond 1 pci-e). Accept that, and move on.

For the last time, you can get this to use as configured and have a good system. Or you can upgrade the PSU and VGA and have a very decently priced and pretty powerful gaming system - without any overclocking or other such hackery.

It's definitely G0 stepping:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01312597&cc=ca&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_CAEN

You can tell by the fact that they list the CPU wattage at 95W (G0) instead of 105/110W (B3). As well, it was introduced in Dec 2007 which is well after the G0 stepping release...

Note: This system uses the same Asus mobo as the a6345f and the m9150f.

My first system was a HP refurb from BB. It has been over 1 1/2 years now and it's working fine. They made me buy their stupid EPP. It's bull crap, hahaha, the system is refurb and it's running fine. Didn't really need the EPP. But then again, I was dum and stupid a while back to believe the sales rep that you should get extra warranty for refurb products, lol.

I believe thats for those who actually picked it up in store. If you waited for shipping, i'm pretty sure it got canceled as well. like another saide, diff. in pricing perhaps?

$20 vs. $100... quite easy to make a decision on whether or not to honour it.

at least those of you who ordered got a $25 GC (usually they give out a measly 5/10% discount digital dollar code... and at worst, nothing except for an email stating the fact and "sorry for the inconvenience")

--------

i do not agree that they did not honnor their error, but there a difference between 20$ error, and 100$. thats why they did not honnor it.

exactly. for those of us who have been here long enough, we know them well enough that if the error is too huge, they're usually reluctant to honour it.

------

I believe thats for those who actually picked it up in store. If you waited for shipping, i'm pretty sure it got canceled as well.

actually, if you read back on the respective threads (BB's USB, FS's KB/M combo), they honoured some online orders. those who ordered multiples claimed to have only 1 honoured.

but the best bet was to order online for ISPU and get there ASAP before they realize the error

BB has a history of not honoring price errors (just search the forums).

and FS ;)

The only company that regularly honors their price error = Dell (well NCIX generally do too but they rarely have price errors).

NCIX didn't honour that $30 Mitsubishi projector... but that's ok. we understand the error was a $3000 one
props to them for giving out $25 GC as compensation :D

there was also that Verbatim 15pk DL deal for $15... which some claimed to be a price error and they honoured it. ( however, i still think it wasn't, as there was some sort of "IR" applied)

Does this mean they're honoring the price? Or are they going to demand that I pay the difference afterwards?

300w power supply, a lil weak. probably change it out if i switch video cards...

nvidia 8400 is pretty weak, only showing a 3.5 in the windows experience index for windows aero.

tons of bloatware to get rid of, after i set all this up i will probably turf it and put on vista 64 bit anyways.

32 updates via microsoft needed out of the box. this does not include sp1... that will come after i update these 32 i guess..

first thing box wants to do is create recovery disks...requires 3 dvd's to do it.

out of the box it is using around 900mb of memory out of the 3 gigs included.

kinda cool seeing the 4 cpu graphs in task manager....of course they idling most of the time.

not sure if it is the bloatware, or the video card, but so far it does not seem particularily faster than my dell amd x2-3800+ with only 2 gigs of ram. although i did have a 7950 gt in that one. which is clearly faster than this box video wise.

keyboard seems ok for stock, although it is ps/2. mouse i didnt even bother with.

havent hooked up any of the media related things such as ir receiver and remote/tuners etc.

haha, no, we ordered, they sent us email saying they cancelled, and gave us 25 gift codes for the inconvience...and then proceeded to fulfill our orders anyways. the assumption is we were charged $449 plus taxes as per the original price error.

thats the price showing on our electronic invoices...i havent actually checked with my credit card company to see what they charged, but we are assuming it is the 449 price and not higher. thats what all the electronic emails and receipts are showing.

if it was free....that would be pure jokes, but i severely doubt it. we are lucky just to get the orders fulfilled, and be given 25 bux for our troubles haha.

taking forever to make the 3 recovery dvds required....still going, its been like an hour.

I hope it gets here (Vancouver) soon! I can't wait!

I checked my credit card statement and indeed they only charged me $449.99 + fees + tax. :D

Does anyone find this machine's fan loud and annoying?
I think it is the CPU fan or it could be the hard drive... when I load a webpage, it stops for like a second...hmmm

I also noticed that the hard drive runs a little loud. My dvd drive door also gets stuck when it closes. Besides that all is well!

yeah my dvd drive door gets stuck as well - no biggie
Hard drive noise is alright.

This squelching noise is annoying, I believe I've isolated it to the PSU
Just got a replacement order put thru via online tech support @ hp.ca :P

Hopefully this will fix it by next week

Ha, i opened up the box again to put in a bluray/hddvd reader...didnt notice before.

Previous owner left their 2G XD card in the reader! the pics on it indicate my box was previously in california.

im sure hp would give me something to squish this story eh?

Running on two 500 GB HD raid 0 ( Intel software version 8.5) and a 9800 gt ( rated at 105 watts) without any problems. On inital boot/power-up, my APC UPS registered a maximum of 180 watts that was drawn momentary ( about 100 watts on idle). Ran 3dmark2006 benchmark (11500) and the power consumptions were well under 250 watts throughout the test.
