I clearly don't travel much, but will be traveling next month.
Do you guys put your phone in "airplane" mode and use it for other purposes (mp3 etc)?
Will passegers (and crew) freak out if I am openly using it (in airplane mode of course)?

i would say as long as you aren't talking on it or making it look like you are texting or anything, i think you should be fine. And if they ask, tell them it is in airplane mode.

Sometimes they'll come up to you and give you the BS cellphone lecture, you just tell them you've turned on the airplane mode.
Also if they give me **** about the take-off / landing crap I'll usually put my phone into sleep mode and keep listining to music through my blue tooth headphones (they can never tell, fuk em, not like the bluetooth will crash the airplane).
Although with the iphone not supporting A2DP, will have to get used to regular earphones (can't skip songs, etc w/o turning on the iphone).

I've used my cellphone in airplane mode to play a game before. No one bothered me.

I had an O2 mini before and there is no such thing as turning the phone off. Most I can do is put it in airplane mode or take the battery out (which I don't bother). I've been on 4-6 plane rides/year and I'm still alive :)
but ofcourse if you don't need to use it, turn it off, makes life that much easier.

Why do people get their shorts in a bunch about being asked to take off headphones, stop playing video games, etc for 10 min while the plane is taking off or landing?
Is it BS? Yeah I think so (Jason Ellis had a hilarious rant on this radio show about being a PSP terrorist), but so is a fuel surcharge that costs more then my flight. So is someone whos so fat they take 2 seats but only get charged for one while you sit next to them, paying full price for half a seat and a fat roll (thats not your own) on your lap. These are all just "part of flying".
Seriously is it that big a deal to take off your headphones for 10 min?
Yet people said (in another thread) that im hard to get along with for not wanting to go through a scanner at the airport that will show my junk to anyone who's looking... LOL Sheeeesh
Oh and on any flight ive been on, they make people take off headphones during take off\landing so I don't know how you get away with using blue tooth ones.

most of the plane attendants are pretty dumb to begin with and will not know what airplane mode is.
To them, if it takes batteries, it should be off.
You can of course tell them that it's on airplane mode and cell phone acts nothing but mp3 player itself...however they can still to ask you to turn it off as it's against the rules to have mp3 player or even a simple gadget when taking off/landing.

Takin off/landing isn't a big deal to me, that's only a short period of time. I was actually asking about the actual flight part
I just don't want to sit there and explain to some person who knows nothing about technology what airplane mode is.

It's not a BS lecture. The output of many cell phones when looking for a carrier signal can cause interference in the plane's communication system. Is it really that much of an inconvenience to shut off your electronics during takeoff and landing? I can be on 4+ flights a week and have never felt it a bother.
Try listening to your MP3s during takeoff or landing on an El Al flight. I've seen people pulled off the plane by armed guards after landing for doing just that.

actually if you're using the headphones that came with the iphone you can easy skips songs by double clicking the mic button on the strap. :cheesygri

I have absolutely no problem stopping any electronic device when taking off or landing. They ask me to, so I do.
I was on a flight from Winnipeg to Toronto once, and the fool in the row ahead of me answered his ringing cell phone twice, and carried on a conversation while we were circling for a landing. The flight attendant asked him three time (with increasing irritation) to put the phone away. He didn't even respond to her - just kept babbling on (in a language I didn't understand, but it certainly didn't sound urgent).
I leaned over the seat, took his phone, shut it, and handed it back.
That solved the problem.

Prove it... Iv seen more evidence on the contrary than the affirmation.

Should have opened the door and throw his cell phone out!!

For the record, yes you can use your cell phone in flight as long as receiving/transmitting functions are swithced off, and they ask you not to use electronic devices during takeoff and landing because these are the most "dangerous" times in the flight, and they want to ensure that your fully paying attention if there is an emergency

Hmm... yeah sure if you want to land hard and fast. Go ahead open the door on the airplane. :cheesygri
