Hi,
So I have an older vehicle, it's in really good shape but I've noticed some rust forming around the rear wheel wells. Not very much rust, definitely doesn't need body work yet just some sanding. But I was wondering, how bad would it look if I bought some matching touch up paint from one of those specialty stores, removed the rust and gave it a few coats wetsand, and clearcoated? I doubt it'd be that bad would it? I figure it's better than having big rust holes forming. Also, I've found a few sites that offer colour matching, but they're located in the States. Anyone know a reliable place in Canada? I found this place: http://www.robertspaintcare.com/ but they never replied to my e-mail with a very basic question, so I wonder if they actually even fill orders...
If anyone can recommend a place, that'd be great!
Oh, and the other option would be to get a cheap paint job done at Maaco. Not sure I want to do that though, I've heard some horror stories from that place.

I assume that this is not just surface paint oxidation? If it is, it should just buff out with some polish.

If it's a older vehicle, OEM touch up paint won't match. Your paint is oxidated already. If looks are important to you, you'll have to go to a custom shop to colour match.

I've never had the patience to spot repair paint. Too much trouble with the edge feathering and all. But, if you decide to do it:

1. You don't apply layers of wetsand. Just buy several grades/grit of wetsand blocks.

2. Polishing will be key to remove the wetsand marring.

3. Make sure that you clean the area well before you paint. Use distilled water to flush.

4. Thin and even is the key to painting. build up the layers to match the surrounding paint. Don't fill it all at once.

5. Same with the clear; several thin coats is the order of the day.
4.

Don't know how much you need but the dealers often have smaller spray cans for sale.
Many body shops will actually mix and fill a spray can for you. If you have the time to wait until they do a car with your paint colour it will be cheaper. Check with the dealers body shop even.
I don't know the age of your car and how long you want to keep it but I have used Maaco before. I would go in for an estimate, they would do their best and try and upsell and then I would tell them that it is too much for the old car I had. A few weeks later (sometimes sooner) they would call me back and try to get me in for half price. I did this twice. I make the appointment for a Monday, that way I can strip off all the chrome, and any other obstructions. They like to mask stuff off and acid wash to do the prep. If you do some sanding then it may cost a bit more because they will need to prime too. Anyway, for less than $500 you should get a job that will last few years, not high end but then it depends what you want.

As I have stated in two threads in this section, NAPA will colour match your vehicle and sell you a spray can. Call them up before you go.
