Hi. I'm considering buying a used iphone (the non-3G) and want to know how I can check the Firmware version and how I can check whether it has been jailbroken or not. Does anyone know?

I have read that I should type *3001#12345#* and it will tell me the version? Anyone tried this?

Hi. I'm considering buying a used iphone 2nd generation and want to know how I can check the Firmware version and how I can check whether it has been jailbroken or not. Does anyone know?

The iphone 3G only has firmware 2.0, no other firmware. And to find if it is jailbroken, check if it has cydia on it, if it does, it is jailbroken.

I was not asking about the 3G phone. I'm asking about the first generation of iphones. 1.1.4 is the latest version of the firmware, I know. But I don't know how to check which version the phone I may purchase has installed on it. That's my question.

<<um your initial post definitely said SECOND generation, aka 3g.>>

3G stands for 3rd Generation.
I guess I should be more clear. going to edit it now.

+1, that can tell the firmware

If the iphone has an app called "Installer" or "Cydia" then it is jailbroken.

3G does not stand for 3rd generation, it stands for what kind of network it uses(i don't know the exact term). The first generation used Edge, the second generation uses 3G, 3G can surf the internet faster through using data from your cell phone provider.

Okie dokes, I got my answers. Thanks so much guys.
I'm sorry about the confusion, but 3G really does stand for 3rd Generation. Anyways, to conclude:

To find the version on the phone, either go to settings > general > about if your phone is already activated. If not, then type *3001#12345#* and send and it will bring you a screen. Version 1.1.4 shows up as 04.04.05_G.

To determine whether it has been jailbroken, look for an installer application. I believe ziphone (shown as a Z) is the icon to look for. I don't know what Cydia looks like. How many installers are out there? Which is better?

Look for an app that says either Installer or Cydia under it, you don't have to look at the image. And Installer is better IMO, because you can add sources and has way more apps on it than cydia. Don't go by whether it has a Ziphoen logo thing, because that can be deleted easily by holding on the app for about 3 seconds than hitting the delete button.

Google 3rd generation iphone, nothing will come up, search 2nd generation iphone, the 3g iphone will come up

+1 - it is only the second major hardware release of the iPhone so it is 2nd generation, but it is called the iPhone 3G due to the 3G technology.

I see what you guys are saying. I think we're arguing on a 6 of these, half a dozen of those basis. I understand that the iphone 3G is the second generation of iphone phones. I think you're right, I called the original one the 2nd generation iphone. I meant to say the 2nd generation radio technology capable phone, but it came out wrong. Anyways, let's move on. This is no longer productive. Thanks again to all, and sorry for the confusion.

Just for future reference, call it the 2G iphone, not 2nd generation, then people will understand what you are talking about. But lets move on.
